Commentator Review

Just finished reading this article. As often the case the comments make as good reading as the article itself.

Loved this one on Dermie:

" Dermott commenting on a players set shot for goal "its starting to rain and it's coming from the players left side, so the droplets on the ball will pull it left" classic Derm "

[censored] me, why would you bother? They are mostly all [censored]. Well no, that is wrong. There are so many trying to make a living out of commentating or writing about football that they are constantly looking for a headline or tv grab. So the ante is continually being amped up. So maybe they are not [censored] but just protecting their jobs.

Anyway, if you doubt my questioning of footy journos/commentators in general, just consider the [censored] who is the chief football writer for Melbourne's biggest selling paper.

I agree with the order mostly.  Generous to Derwayne though.

I assume Tony Shaw was omitted deliberately, to avoid the traumatic experience of having to recall the assault that occurs on one's senses when he's on.

  • 1 year later...

Thought I would look at this 12 months on but put my own thoughts forward.

People I like commentating.

Jonno Brown - Not because he is smart or insightful, just because he talks us up and seems to be one of few who can see what is building.

Dennis Commetti - Sadly no longer on but was quite witty and didn't get caught in all the crap the others do.

Roos - Clearly knows his stuff and loves us. I love how he talks about us like he talked about the Swans when he arrived.

King - Don't mind him but I have no idea why.

Daisy - Superstar in every way!

The others are the lesser known actual commentators, the ones who call the game and leave all the other crap behind. They take so little of the spot light themselves I can't even remember their names. I think it was the Gold Coast game where this was the case with pretty much the whole panel, it was great. (Huddo, Whateley, Morfett, types)

Commentators that I am indifferent to.

Dermie - Seems to know what he is on about, talks us up at times and seems to actually know who we are. Does get caught up in the boys club too much though.

Ling - Same as Dermie

Judd - Love the fact he is a little more intelligent that most of them but brings himself down to their level with the boys club crap (If you hadn't gathered I'm not a fan of boys club [censored])

Carey - I like his commentary and think he is one of the early adopters of us on the rise. Can't stand him as a women bashing %^&# that he is.

Commentators I don't like.

BT - Idiot of the highest order who plays to the lowest common denominator and thinks the whole show is about him. Also has no idea who most of the players are.

McAvaney - Respect his knowledge and commitment to the job but he gets a little too exited by some players and it detracts from his calling. He constantly seems to need reassurance that what he says is right to.

Lethal - Watched the Hawks game and have not heard such a one sided biased piece of work since press red for Ed. No respect for anyone, thinks he is god, go and get stuffed lethal.

Zempelis - Doesn't know or care about anything outside of WA.

McLachlan - Would not have a job if it wasn't for his brother. Insipid sycophantic morsel of a human being.

Eddie - Can get stuffed. Likes to be professional and impartial but has little digs where ever possible.

Darcy - Eddie 2.0 (or Little Ed as I like to call him)

Watson - Biased drug cheat apologist moron.

Richo - There just isn't much up top.

I am sure there are many I have left off, am interested to know other peoples thoughts as it can make you see things in people you don't notice yourself.

Or push it right?

Ah Dermie. A true expert on everything, and now meteorology and maybe ballistics?

My favorite was the time he said players went into the water at chilly StKikda beach the day after a game "to wash out the lactic acid"???

Adam Papalia is one of the best commentators, if not the best. Calls the game properly.

Dermie seems to know what he is on about... but has no idea how to say it. Gets himself tangled up trying to sound intellectual.

Ling is abysmal.

Went up a notch in my estimation when he apologised about the Garland mistake on Saturday. Others wouldn't...

...but other than that a pretty average caller.

I noticed the apology as well and thought it was good.

Actually like Bruce for his passion  but his over the top commentary does irritate. His calling when Blokes like Rioli and Buddy are playing is painful. Similarly with his tennis commentary I wish he would desist from quoting so many trivial statistical facts that are for the most part irrelevant and tiresome. As a track and field commentator he is without peer and should in his declining years just stick to athletics. However, despite the irritations as a footy commentator prefer him over half the field. Dwayne takes last place. Much prefer to think about the top 3 or 4 because the rest are pretty awful. Amazing how the standards of all the TV and radio stations seem at odds with spectators.

Obviously Brad Johnson's bias is so bad he doesn't even rate a mention!

Was kind to Hamish McLachlan, I don't rate his commentary at all.

Yea his passion is there but aside from his predictive calling just yelling player names isn't really commentating. I just miss Dennis I guess.

Sorry, but a good commentator has absolutely nothing to do with MFC cheerleading.

At least BT takes the [censored] out of himself and others.  He loves the word "here", but says it "heear".

It wasn't a comment on who was a good commentator, it was a comment on who I liked, hence I said people I LIKE commentating.

I neither like BT or think he is a good commentator. He constantly greets names wrong, has no idea about what 80% of the team's in comp are up to, and loves the sound of his own voice.

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol
