Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

Jones finished runner up in the Best and Fairest in his 2nd year.

Again this proves your complete lack of knowledge of Jones as a footballer and in general.

You do realise we support the same team and have never met, right? How you know about my general knowledge is amazing!! I am certain Jonesy did not finish runner up that year and I stand by my opinion of him in his first two years, a principle that applies very often to AFL players. Nev Jetta, Harmes, etc...

The point of this is that the club clearly want Omac to learn while playing, primarily atAFL level. And I am ok with that, as long as Casey remains an option for form or learning certain traits.

Hasn't been terrible, but Michie, ANB, Newton etc haven't been any worse and they got less of a chance.

They play in different positions, though. Plenty of people can play the roles Michie, ANB and Newton do. We only have a select few who can play as a key back.

Yeah I get that, but Dunn's VFL form has been very good and Garland was still dropped due to form. I don't think it's a big conspiracy like some, but it doesn't make a lot of sense to me when weighing it up against what Roos' philosophy.

You're the numpty that said it.

Clearly roos is planning on building a team for a grand final. Reckon that might be why Dunn isn't there? Or is that out of your depth?

It was mentioned pre-season that Dunn was out of favour with Goodwin.  There's a reason he wasn't selected in round one.  He's not being selected because he's not adhering to team defence structures.  It's got nothing to do with a GF in mind, just the best "team" as they see it.

Do some research,  Chuckles.

VFL form means zip if it is not playing the way the coaches want!!

Dunn has known for at least 6 months what coaches want and for some reason he isn't or can't do it.

Maybe it was better to bring in these changes against the Dawks then [censored] the others who had done the NT trip plus a couple of 6day turnaround games.

Yeah, a few people have said that. It's a good point, but it smacks of throwing this game, which I don't like.

I'm not much of a punter and don't really want to be seen to encouraging gambling, but IMHO the $5 being offered for a Melbourne win this week is pretty darn good based on respective form to date and I'm very tempted to put $50 on us.

I know recient past record against would suggest I'm a fool, but Hawthorn weren't all that good against the lions and neither have we been the past two, so I think it will come down to who wants it more.  I'm happy that we've selected a team of goers and we are about due for another breakthrough game like Geelong last year.

Any thoughts?

Set fire to it mate. You'll have more fun.

True, but we don't have such an abundance of tall backs.  It could be argued that Dunn or even Peddo could fill in down back, but I'm not sure their leg speed is up to it these days.  I hate to say it and I hope I'm wrong, but Lynden looked past AFL standard in his appearances this season.

There's far more competition for midfield spots than there is for KPD.

Hope we win a clearance or two.

We should just blanket Mitchell today.Keep him below 25 possessions and we have a slim chance.

I wonder if any of the posters bemoaning  omacs selection and dunn's non selection  (or the zone defense and high press for that matter) wanted goodwin to take over the coaching reins from roos after the nab cup?

Anyway you've nfa, I'm going to go watch oscar and the boys put up a good show in a round 11 fixture to hopefully beat a team that have had the wood over us for too long. Have fun at your grand final!

Any thoughts on key back line match ups?  It's really the Hawks smalls we need to worry about more than their talls.

I recon Hunt could be the guy to curtail Rioli as he should have the pace and agility to go with him. I'd be a bit concerned that he doesn't have experience, though playing on one of the guns of the comp could also be a good learning experience for Hunt.

Jetta to play in their other very dangerous small forward Poppy.

Puopolo is the type of player that Melbourne lets off the chain and kicks a bag of goals. Agree that Jetta will spend some time on him but who knows whether this 'Diamond Defence' will be persisted with against the Hawks if they start scoring heavily out the back. Their smaller forwards could have an absolute field day if we don't win the majority of clearances.

Oh FFS is it hard for people to take the time out and do a bit of research..

Nathan Jones came runner up in the Best and Fairest to James McDonald in 2007. Officially his 2nd year.

This crap about Jones been so underwhelming as a junior and comparing him to Oscar is pathetic and laughable.

You're right about Jones' 2nd year - I got my years mixed up.  However, his 3rd and 4th years weren't as good (outside of the top ten in '08)  Like most good players, he started to hit his straps in a consistent way after he had a good amount of games under his belt.  Players generally start to hit their peak at age 21-23 or even later.  Some start reaching their peak earlier but that's the minority.

We have any number of players who are in a similar category - young, raw, developing and needing senior experience.  I'll argue for opportunity because without opportunity, how will the MC ever find out whether a player can play or not?  We've won 5 of 10 with a predominantly young side so we're tracking quite well, all things considered.

New players playing in defence are nearly always going to attract more attention and heat but we have a need to play new players in the backline whether we like it not ... that is based on the new game plan which demands players playing various roles, the zone defence & the MC not wanting to play Grimes, Dunn and Garland (earlier in the season) back there.

Melksham and Salem not being available hasn't helped either.  Frost hasn't shown a great deal although I'd argue for opportunity in Frost's case too.  Wagner & Oscar and other new players playing in defence therefore became a somewhat default position.

I feel like I have to spoon feed you.

I know why Dunn is out of the team, but notwithstanding the fact he hasn't played within team defence structures as well as the coaching staff would have liked he's still a mile ahead of McDonald, who is spectacularly out of his depth.  Imo Dunn or Pedersen would provide a better key defence option than McDonald.

It goes without saying that Goodwin disagrees.

Enjoy the footy.  Perhaps it would be better not to pick a fight while you're there.

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
