Casey Byes for 2016 - Round 8, Round 12, Round 14

3 byes in seven weeks - absolutely disgraceful.  How are clubs supposed to develop players and rehabilitate coming back from injury in this amateurishly run competition......sorry I am being unfair to VAFA.  

Absolute rubbish that that AFL accepts this garbage as preparation for their Victorian based clubs.

Yeah that is terrible. Wish they'd go back to the old Reserves competition. 

I remember as a kid you'd get to the game early just to watch the 2s play.

I'm surprised the Victorian AFL aligned clubs don't get together and organise "reserves" practice matches on these weekends.

Yep! I really liked that system.

I remember going to a game in the 90's against North where we won the reserves, coin toss, seniors and half time auskick (back in the days when they both kept and showed the score on the big screen).

My brother is a north supporter. It was a good day.

I remember the McLelland Trophy. Best overall record across Under 19's Reserves and Seniors. Now that was a trophy to win. I recall watching Richmond play in three premiership matches in one day, I may be wrong early 70's I think.

Those were the days, used to love watching the final quarter of the reserves. It really got everyone in the mood for the big match and had the added interest of seeing who looked good in the reserves and may be a chance the following week. If the prelim game was reinstated I reckon it would have the fans flocking back. Would be good for the revenue of the bars and food outlets. Having attended some country games this year, all the spectators turn up to watch the last half or quarter. Unfortunately, I know the answer, its not going to happen.

Not only that, but Grand Final day used to be the Grand Final day for everyone. Matches seemed to start at about 9am.

Sometimes the memory can play tricks but what I remember about watching the Reserves was near empty stadiums until around 3/4 time where the stands would start to fill and the reason for that was the short break of 10 minutes between the end of the Reserves and the start of the seniors. (My vivid memory was that because of the low crowds you could often hear what the players were saying on the ground.)

Sure at finals time there were more but that occurred because standing room and the members were unreserved meaning people had to get there earlier than usual.

If you had a half hour break between the reserves and the seniors to allow for warm ups and the now ubiquitous advertising I suspect the crowd watching even the last quarter would be low.

On a diverse note it must be hard being a player for Casey where there are two bands of players (the MFC players and the non-MFC players). As a non MFC player it would be natural to feel some form of discrimination. Perhaps another topic over the off season.

Anyone who saw the Casey game today:

Hulett kicked a bag of goals but wasn't mentioned in the better players. Just right place right time or what?  

Did the bag enhance his prospects?  

What position (such as they are these days) did he play?  

Was the absence of the Weed a help to him?

Sam Weideman 26 goals

Liam Hulett 29 goals 

Both combined for 55 goals which is a fantastic effort. The future is certainly bright if these two continue to develop at the rate they going.

Expect a huge pre season from both and play at least 10 plus games in 2017.

Agree, very very green but plenty to work with! Also reckon Tim Smith MIGHT be worth a look!? Mc Inerny NO Keilty on todays performance NO!

Have seen very little of Hullett this year, but haven't been blown away by his speed or agility for a big bloke. Would be interested to hear what other more seasoned observers have seen from him in this regard..?

Thought they played too close together today - when four players all fly for a mark, there's only one place it's going to end up. Still, that's a pretty small part of the whole debacle. Tim Smith was very good when the ball got that far, especially in 2nd Q.

Don't know why Kielty wasn't tried on the ball, Spencer & Oscar weren't getting anywhere. If the plan was to keep him away from the public gaze so we could draft or rookie him, it succeeded all too well!

He is bog ordinary.Average in every way.

I've seen him play twice and it's enough for a discerning judge like myself to know.

He reminds me of me as a player-nothing special at all.

I actually think he moves better then what he looks. A few times this year i was suprised to see him get to a contest or take a mark that i didn't think he'd get to.

He's a real competitor and a big brute of a lad. I see a bit of Leigh Brown in him myself. Not the most skilful player. But a very handy one who will play his role and give it his all.

Weideman can clearly play, but needs to keep his intensity up (and get bigger and stronger, which will happen in time).

I can only see Hulett making it if he can be the back up ruckman, because his skills aren't good enough to be a genuine AFL forward.

Think Weid can make it. His got the type of build which will allow him to put on some weight with another preseason. He moves well for a big bloke  

Hulett, having seen him play for Casey a number of times this year I've got my doubts. Don't think he has the size to back up in the ruck.

Weid is an obvious talent but i still think he needs another 2-3 pre seasons, he has to add some size and improve his running power to consistently impact at AFL level, but he's good serious talent and i think he'll be a very good AFL key forward. 

Hulett is an interesting one, kind of comes with an AFL body, i think he needs to work on his running ability and try and become a super mobile Gunstan type key forward,not sure how high his ceiling is but he's already a strong VFL performer and i don't think it's a stretch to think he'll be playing AFL next year

Both had fantastic years and looked tired yesterday, probably as expected in their first season of senior football.

Weideman will be a very good lead up player when he has some more size. Considering how slim he is, he does really well to get to the top of packs and get hands on the ball as he does. A bit more weight behind him will help him split those packs apart. Love his kicking action too - simple and effective. Up to yesterday afternoon I believe he had kicked 24.5 and therefore ended up with 26.7.

Hulett will come on even more next season I think, considering last season he only played the last 2 games of the TAC competition. I also wouldn't be surprised if they gave him a run in defence, just to see what his ability as a swingman might be like. Regardless, his style of play could see him end up as a good third/fourth tall to Hogan, Weideman and Watts.

i'm glad you mentioned that, he was obviously underdone this season and even so played well enough to kick 29 goals and he should have kicked at least two more goals yesterday.

Let's not write him off yet.

I think we expect way too much from first year players. They don't get drafted until late November and in most cases have only played against other kids. Academy selections have been in the system for 3-4 years getting prepared at and for AFL level performance. It's a nice head start to have.

Just beat me to it Clint     These kids are 19 years old and have been managed through the year.   They will have programs for the summer to build fitness and strenth.

They need another two pre seasons and turn into men.

Be patient.
