Sam Weideman and Liam Hulett

Seriously wrapped to hear these playing so well in the VFL. It gives me a bit of confidence that we now have a bit more depth in the forward line with both Sam and Liam developing nicely.

Whats more impressive is Weidemans 15 goals from 5 games! I seem to recall pre draft that many believed he was a genuine top 3 pick if it wasn't for his injuries.

It'll be interesting to see which plays first. I have nothing to go off other than Casey reports, but it sounds as if Hulett is already phyiscally developed. It also sounds like he's improving with each game - the earlier reports were of him being reminded to get in to position and so forth. Weideman by the sounds has all the skills, but requires more size.

Early days, but how exciting would it be if it turned out we picked up two genuine key forwards in one draft?

I was told by a mate that Sam also has a healthy dose of confidence in his own abilities, not arrogant but that if he applies himself to the task he can win any contest. And beat any defender.

If that translates over the the AFL then he is half way to making it.

Weideman is developing ahead of schedule. He's showing great ability already and is close to matching what Hogan did at VFL level in his first year. Once he adds more strength to his upper body he'll be a ripper at AFL level.

Hulett is going nicely as well. He's still learning and is a bit behind, but he uses his body well and attacks the contest. He just needs to work on consistency and leading to the right spots.

It's actually 25.2 between them with Weed kicking truly for 15 of those.

Stu told me that Frost was very important to the structure of our forward-line.

Kind of an awkward situation, that Casey is out of room for key forwards, but for various legitimate reasons we can't quite settle the Melbourne forward line.

By the numbers, Sam Weideman is almost identical height and weight to Jack Watts. Obviously you'd expect Weideman to put on some more muscle and maybe even a little height, making him more of a true key forward.

It is kind of a poignant comparison - imagine six years ago, we draft a key forward with a top-10 pick, he starts his career by being one of the top goalkickers in the VFL, taking a steady flow of marks and contested marks... the hype and pressure would be unconstrained.

The lid is being kept on nicely for Weidemann, and for Hulett. They'll have time to develop, time to learn that training and making professional progress is the real core of their job, regardless of games played.

Petraccattack, am I reading the individual stats right, or are they missing some stats? Weidemann has not kicked a behind this season?!

Forget about the physical similarities, Weideman thinks and plays like a key forward and that's not Watts' go. 

Weideman attacks marking contests with belief and fearlessness and that has never been Watts' strong suit.

I have no problem that Frost was started up in attack, he trained there in the preseason, but with Dawes back playing, and Weideman and Huelett coming on well, its not a bad thing for Frost to go back. Garland and Dunn have not been in career best form it's fair to say, and OMac is not quite ready for a spot either. 

Roos alluded in one of his press conferences last week that with a lot of players in form trying to push into the seniors that the coaches had to give them other tasks in other roles to give them the best chance of playing seniors. Grimes is playing more wing & HF. They gave Michie a chance at HB. It makes sense that they play Frost in defence to get another chance also.

They've been trying to turn Frost into a second ruck and at the time there wasn't space for him in defence. I think he can develop into a gorilla style defender, but time will tell on the second ruck side of things. So far Pedders is streets ahead in that department.

I'm looking forward to seeing Weeds debut later this year, I think it'll be right at the end if finals are off the cards and we're putting others in cotton wool. No rush with him, let him continue to develop and gain confidence at VFL level. This is what we've always dreamed of, top ten draft picks having to wait and earn their spot in the 22.

I didn't like seeing Frost in the forward line, but I see the reasoning. If we didn't have Weideman and Hulett showing good signs in the VFL and Dawes wasn't finally overcoming his calf issues, we'd be pursuing with Frost in the forward line out of necessity.

From the games ive seen Hulett has the size but not quite the smarts yet.

Weeds has the smarts but not yet the body size.

We're crying out for a 2nd and 3rd key defender. O.Mac, Garland and Dunn have all been tried this year, and none have cemented a place.  Roos stated that Frost was brought into the club as a replacement for Frawley, and he's yet to be tried as a backman. Whilst I understand the need for a second ruck / forward, Frost was never the answer.

I was surprised we gave up this year's first round pick last season, having seen what Oliver and weed have produced so far it looks like a great move.

Weed could even crack the team by June at this rate.

Except that the Hawks had just those two: if the cards play right we could have a trio!

And it does give the opportunity / necessity to give Frost another go at defence.  OMcD is someone else to look forward to, whilst Garland and possibly Dunn are definitely in their decline.

I'm not expecting much from Hulett, just through painful recent history (Davis, Cook)... But Weed I'd LOVE to see come in for the last round or two, and kick 4 playing as a foil to Jesse. If that happens, along with our kids, just watch what the media does with us. They'll say Ruck, midfield, tall and short forwards all sorted out. Good CHB and small defenders sorted too. Not much left to get there....
