I could say Ron Barassi but I won't.What interests me is that some of the most astute and successful coaches haven't been great players. Clarkson was a thug and a battler, Tom Hafey was a battler, Luke Beveridge ditto. Sheedy was a full time thug, Malthouse was an honest toiler. Timmy Watson, James Hird, Voss, Schimilbusch, Hart, Primus, Buckley, (hey, thanks Eddie, baby,) Knights,Bourke, Bartlett etc were great footballers, lousy coaches...

Then there were the greats like Barassi, Smith, Matthews (THUG), Blight, Alves and a few others who could do both.

The name that rings my bells is Nathan Bassett,a dud at Melbourne, a star in hometown Adelaide.

Paul Roos was a pretty handy player......

What a complete and utter load of rubbish.

Everyone knows we should be bring back Mark Neeld.  In addition, replacing Jason Taylor with Barry Prendergast wouldn't go astray either and what's Tom Gilles doing these days?

I actually think that we buy a new whiteboard to replace the one that was thrown in the skip behind AAMI Park and start a brilliant You Tube series outlining our vision for the club. I like to call it our 'red and blueprint'.

Goody is highly respected by anyone who has anything to do with the Adelaide footy club, i'm sure there will be a few blokes keen to work with him

Chris Connolly, he took the fall unjustly after the stool pigeon Mclean dobbed him in.

Would bring a lot of experience and his fondness for the club remains unquestioned.

You've got to be kidding.

Ready, aim, fire:

Childhood Dees supporter Chris "I'm Baaack!" Judd (ref FC tonight).

Maybe not Goodwin's chair, but one of the footstools?

Brad Green? Although I don't think he is senior enough or experienced enough to replace Goodwin. Brett Ratten I reckon to take Goodwin's place - hard done by at Carlton, great education at Hawthorn, and knows the Dee's well: would be ideal I would have thought.

Brett Ratten for midfield.

Adem Yze for kicking.

They don't really have a coach for the midfield these days. It'd be stoppages if you like or ball movement/transition etc. At least, that's how our FD is currently set up. Would snap Ratten up as one of those though. Of course has history at Melbourne too.

I wonder how many assistants will move on after Roos leaves. You usually see a bit of a turnover. Might be influenced by what Roos ends up doing next year after his time out o/s. I noticed on the weekend his younger son was playing for Carltons affiliate against Casey.

What about Woewodin? Currently coaching the Lions NEAFL team and was the Lions midfield coach for a few years after coaching in the WAFL. Even though the lions haven't been high achievers in his time there the midfield has always been their strongest area.

Didn't Neitz join Hawthorn this year? Nice one to get back. Good mentor for Jesse and the Weed.

Generally speaking, there are a huge number of players that played under Balme and Daniher now involved in coaching.

Just waiting for the Wizard's entry into coaching!

Brendan McCartney will be the Senior Assistant this was announced when they announced Simon Goodwin will be coach. Brendan McCartney was going to develop the young players for 2015 & 2016 after that he was going mentor Simon Goodwin.

Please stay away from Green.. Loved him as a player but he got the ass from Carlton when they were a horrid. Goes to North Melbourne as a defence coach and now their biggest problem is their poor defence that leak way too many goals.

Forget about romance and focus on getting the best people possible.

I reckon Brett would hardly know a soul at the club these days. In the 10 (?) years since he was there the place has changed beyond recognition.

I could see McCartney moving into the role and then trying to poach another highly rated coach from another club to fill McCartney's position. I would love us to try to get Ratten back at the club, I really rated his work at Melbourne and even felt he was doing a good job at Carlton under the circumstances. I believe he's still at Hawthorn and I know everyone loves working there given the success, perhaps the carrot of being part of future success at Melbourne could lure him over.

Can we just pay McCartney more and give him a fancier title to continue doing what he's doing? Formula seems to be working. Also, are we at risk of poaching here?

I think that's pretty much exactly what will happen except he'll take on more overseeing of the other coaches and we'll need someone to step into his current role.

And btw Alistair Lynch has been at a couple of training sessions doing part time work with our forwards and defenders.

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo
