I understand I undersold the technicality of it but I'm sure the AFL could still afford to implement it at all regular stadiums.

It should be at all home grounds, there's no way that the AFL can't afford it

What a great game it was!!

My observations...

1. Garry Ablett is cooked, or playing severely injured.

2. MFC have a large GC supporter base or a lot of fans made the trip up because we deffiantly had more fans there tonight.

3. Prestia will be a fantastic addition for us next year, all class.

A number of people were on the plane going up, so I'd say we have a lot of supporters that went up, but also a few QLD-based supporters.

Jayden Hunt

That win was in 2010 and was 73 points.

You might even get to the ground with your old man now...

Trac kicked his first goal right in front of us, what a moment! Then he doubled up!

That Hogan goal called touched in 2nd quarter was clearly over the line!

The forward pressure noteably in 3/4 was insane! spent, what an exciting team.

I could tell from watching on the telly it was over the line!

I love the excuse the AFL use that it comes down to money. Seriously "goal line technology" is a few cameras set on record, something tells me if the AFL wanted it, they could afford it.

Argument does not stack up given the amount of tv cash in the game!

Can we never leave Oliver out of the team again? Screw that lighter workrate for the first year players system, this kid can seriously play!

We don't need Prestia tbh. Our midfield is already amazing...having blokes like ANB and VDB to come in as well.

Should use our 2018 first rounder on a defender instead.

Untrue. We can't rest on our laurels.

Premiership sides win it in the middle. Viney, Tyson, Petracca, Oliver, Brayshaw are potential A graders. Viney is already there. The great sides have 6-7 stars that can go through the middle. Prestia would offer us speed and further clearance winning ability. Not to mention he's a proven quantity. A lot of those blokes aren't. He'll also take the pressure off a Viney and Tyson. I reckon we've still got room for two more clearance machines. Prestia and Neale would be nice. ;) If we're going to match it with the GWS' and Bulldogs' of the world, we're going to need a very deep midfield.

Ben Kennedys goal on the angle was awesome.

He has been a great pic up.

Thanks collywobbles.

He should have dished that one off I reckon, although it doesn't matter so much when he kicks it.

Agree that he has been a great pick up. The Kennedy-Bugg combination couldn't have been any less inspiring on paper last October but their value to the side already cannot be understated. Trading up to get Oliver looks like a [censored] masterstroke too. We should look at keeping Roos on as a list manager because that's where he does his best work.

Quick mention about Oliver. Never ever seen a bloke do five ups in the space of ten seconds. Someone care to confirm if I am right or not.

Also if he did, without any comment would be good for the whole team to see it.

What do you call second, third, fourth attempts etc ?

'Efforts' I guess.  Second effort, third effort etc.

Or pressure acts.

The hunger for a big win was pleasing ... the players sensed that the Gold Coast could be crushed and we duly crushed them.  In the end, they (the GCS) didn't want to be out there so kudos to our blokes for putting them into that frame of mind.

Can't ask for much more than that after a tight first half - 16 goals in the 2nd half was an excellent return but it was the way we went about it that stood out ... fast movement of the ball and we were direct.

Basic fundamentals such as playing in front and being first in for the ball with plenty of 2nd and 3rd efforts set up the win ... it helps when we've got a dominant ruckman who can bring so many of our players into the game.

Like a number of other teams, we've got a young list.  So we'll have a few down days (like last week)  To expect otherwise is unrealistic.  However, we should have an expectation of effort, energy, application and a will to win.  For the most part we're getting that (save for 1 game)  Strangely enough, I believe the North loss is driving the new standards (not the Essendon loss)

I thought the value Hunt's pace brings to the team was summed up pretty well during a passage in the 3rd Q I think it was.

Got the ball off half back, but had a few Suns around him. Put on the burners for 2 or 3 steps just enough to draw them in before dishing a handball out to space on the wing. Could have easily passed it off as soon as he got his hands to it but then his team mate would have been under pressure straight away. That burst was just enough to get the runner free.

It's all good having speed, but knowing how to use it is even better

Kelly just doesn't get enough of the ball though, Scully has been getting mid 20's each week.

And is a liability with it in his hands. Terrible kick of the footy, he was instrumental in our beating GWS.

Pedo and Kennedy. Two pretty good games tonight. Every time I see Kennedy I chuckle about how we pinched him from Collingwood. Plays like total in and under.

Pedo real confidence player in my book and  he clicked tonight. No hesitation, went straight into the centre and took it on. Keep at it.

Pedo has lost a lot of weight. Looks fit.

Metricon is a good little stadium, BUT....

It has major access problems. We had to do the car, train, bus trifecta to get there. Very little info on how to get there online. It's the sort of issue that would make non diehards not bother to make the effort.

As for the game itself, it was a good performance. Gold Coast looked rubbish from the outset, but we didn't get going until quarter time. And then after half time we turned it up a notch and they couldn't go with us.

Gawn was amazing, although got a couple of goals from frees (couldn't tell if they were there at the ground).

Jetta was a brick wall, one of my favourites.

Hunt is an important player for us. Gives us something different and had a great game last night.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
