I'd like to see Eddie put his weight behind improving the infrastructure around the existing precinct instead.

With the MCG, AAMI & the tennis centre all hosting events at the same time, neither the roads nor the rail system are up to the challenge.

And I wonder if they realise the drop in attendances that the lack of all weather parking causes.

why does the media give such credence to what Eddie suggests?  such ridiculous ideas.  premiership points from the NAB challenge, knock down a stadium and build another one.

how about getting back to grass roots and putting the money into stadiums around Melbourne, Princes park, waverly wherever.  it would add a lot to the game

for those interested.......(from wikipedia)....

victoria stadium was used as a "working name" during construction. when completed the first official name became docklands stadium (which i think is still the official name, with other naming-rights names such as telstradome, etihad stadium etc not really being "official" names)

you're normally wittier than that, irw. do you think he might have pushed fitzroy and collingwood further down the list?

That land should fetch a decent return, why not spend on something fabulous, like a floating stadium? Off season exhibition games would certainly turn heads. Imagine pulling into Kowloon Bay with that baby. We could kill two birds with the one stone and name it 'Eddiehad' stadium. Time for these guys to think big.

So would this be before or after we build the 3rd boutique stadium that holds 35K?

I'm assuming Eddie must be financing the demolition of two stadiums, building of two new ones and moving of richmond train station under ground?

This is exactly the problem.  Hit the nail on the head.  Let's knock down 2 stadiums, build 2 more and we will break even? Spare me!!

Notice how the proposal for the new stadium isn't where Collingwoods training ground is at the moment?  It would fit perfectly.

Perhaps we could knock down the Lexus centre for another tennis court as a replacement?

Perhaps we just give Collingwood this whole new ground free of charge....

Mc Chins has another agenda to better Collingwoods position, at the expense of everyone else.

From the MFC website today: "The plan involves moving Richmond train station underground, but it revolves around the sale of Etihad Stadium, which the AFL will buy back for $30 in March, 2025."

$30 seems quite expensive for this $hithole!!?? How about 30c.

Most of the problems with Etihad will be solved when the AFL buys it.

The fact that Etihad disrupts the Docklands precinct is really only relevant to the unfortunate people who live or work there.

We should keep Etihad for the rest of it's functional life (20-30 years?) and have the roof closed, clubs making good value for crowds and better value seating distribution.

Then why not built a repeat without many of issues just further along the rail lines in the West. E gate as it's known or somewhere near North Melbourne station. Works perfectly as a spot for fans of the Dogs, North and Essendon and will eventually be valuable land as it's in a gateway between the city and the growing Western Suburbs. Absolutely crazy to have 2 stadiums next to each other on the same side of town.

That Eddie. What a card. Heard a brief bit of him on SEN going on about how we need infrastructure projects in this state, and we'll be able to sell the land above the new underground station which gets freed up, and we'll be able to teach the superannuation investment companies how to invest in local projects, and and and ... it's all so easy, and Eddie clearly has the state's interests at heart more than anything else.

So glib, and so machine gun rapid fire that the announcers weren't able to pull him up on any of it.

It won't happen because it will be so damn expensive. Putting Richmond station underground and selling off the land above won't even pay for the putting underground. Not to mention the rebuilding of Hisense not to mention the new stadium itself, or the underground road which will emerge where exactly? There's already a tunnel under there.

After Dan's adventures with the East-west link, skyrail to Frankston, trying to sell the management of the ports, there is no way known political capital will be spent to find money for this venture.

But the outcome would be an MCG-class stadium right next to ... oh, Collingwood's offices! How about that. Victoria Stadium. We could call the area around it Victoria Park, if we do it often enough the ground will be called Victoria Park as well. I wonder how often Eddie will make a completely accidental slip of the tongue and call it Victoria Park.

It's so close to the Collingwood training oval, hell, they might as well train on the good one. Vic Park that is.

Eddie is so effin' transparent.

Basically we'd be pulling down a high standard stadium so we could build another high standard stadium not far away. Put a train station underground so we could sell off the land above to (not quite) pay for putting the station underground. And knock down a perfectly good tennis stadium to build another tennis stadium right next door. Finally, a quick bit of traffic infrastructure and engineering to just pop Swan St underground and whip up some entry and exit ramps some convenient place nearby. Good one. Forcibly acquiring the bits of Punt Rd that they are entitled to is causing the govt enough anguish as it is.

Good thing Brumby is not still premier otherwise it would all be legislated already.

Hey Eddie

There is a full sized footy ground just across Swan Street at Olympuc Park - how about the AFL using that?

Sure it could inconvenience the club that trains there now, but I am sure they wouldn't mind relocating back to Victoria Park. It would take them back to their grass roots.  They could even play their home games there. A resurgence of Victorian clubs.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
