Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

So you're saying NO he can't (fair enough), I can't imagine Watts playing CHF and crashing packs, and I see Frost as a running tall HF flanker or HB High forward ( I know that's a contradiction...but I think you know what I mean). So there is a bit of a void there, the need for someone to create the crumbs for Garlett and co, and create the room for Hogan

I got there early for a short time and Pedo looked good in the set plays where the mids under little pressure where able to deliver the ball into a forward line with fewer defenders, so yes the defensive pressure is less but he did some good things. In the same drill Watts dropped a sitter in front of goal, reminding me of several episodes last year. Again he dropped it because he was looking for the next move before the ball arrived. He was pulled aside and required to mark 20 odd balls kicked at close range by a coach at speed and duly marked every one of them cleanly. Frost was doing the same up the other end and impressed me with his clean hands, evasive moves and his set up for kicking at goal. Much improved from last preseason I thought. But later on shanked a shot at goal that reminded me of some of my efforts on goal.

N Jones, Viney, Tyson all stood out as usual but I do like Stretch I think he will be a starter for round 1, just looks balanced, focused, and a good decision maker.

The forward setup in the next few years will be intriguing, we seem to have a plethora of tall options, Hogan, Dawes, (in a month) Pedo, Watts, then options like Frost, huellit, weideman, and the M kings, I can't keep up with these new talls. Surely we can manufacture a functioning forward line out of this and add your shorter types, Garlett, Petracca, Kent, JKH and forward mid options, JT, RVanDenberg etc. etc. but yes it all depends on multiple, fast delivery into the forward half.

Roosy was standing in the shadows on the Punt Road boundary line near me and was talking away to himself which I thought odd until I realised he was wired up to the other coaches and was commenting on the match simulation. At one stage B MacCarthy wandered over saying "gee Roosy the play has opened up a bit, but that's not a bad thing you know" but from the animated conversation that followed I am not sure Roosy totally agreed.

Other observations, Viv Mitchie looked good and a likely starter. During the match sim a high ball came into the forward half next to me and the pack that formed was very willing, I think Oscar got the fist in but collected Garland who ended up prostrate and holding his head. He got up and cracked the shytes with Oscar who said it wasn't me mate! The pack was big so even I didn't see who got him.

The match sim I saw I thought their transfer of play was poor, there is little pressure on so you should try it, but I thought they often didn't transfer when they should and other times they transferred when they shouldn't and turned it over horribly. Do that in a match and you won't take the chance again. Anyway it is only preseason.

Forgot to add that early on Trengove looked great in the mid field drills but maybe that was just me so happy to see him competing on the park.

Couldn't disagree more, and is the major thing that worries me about this season. Hogan is the only legitimate goalkicking tall forward option we have, likewise Garlett as a small/medium forward. Dawes, Pedo and Watts have been round long enough, and can't be relied upon as goalkicking tall options. The rest have no track record, and I'd be over the moon if Frost managed to kick more than 20 goals in a season as a key forward.

Unless we get over 20 goals from the likes of Petracca and Kent, and 2-3 mids kicking 15+, I see our attack as being impotent.

Agree Mo that is why I put the longer timeline, 2 to 3 years and threw in the qualifier, " intriguing", that is no guarantees but there is potential there that should be realised in the next 2 years if we get lucky. The fact there are so many of them gives me hope that one or two will work, and that is enough to work in with Hogan, Pedo etc.

King has just had a couple of issues, spoke to him today, he is just working back to full fitness, still growing, so trying not to break him

Some of the low raking kicks were excellent, some were woeful

I had a joke with Sam W re the step on Oscar Mc, said that was the first time he had tried it, being encouraged by the coaches, is agile so use it

Saty, was just hoping to clarify when you say he's still growing. He's as tall as a giraffe, do you mean he's filling out, or is he actually still growing vertically?

Theres always the option of pushing a defender forward, Garlo or Oscar Mc maybe, but the forward set up is crucial to the way we play this year. Tall forwards playing their part is the key to whether we improve or just tread water

Agree with that prognosis, it is crucial and not sure why we aren't looking for Tom Mac to play forward but no sign of that in preseason. They must think Frost is a good bet and leave Tom down back as he is a known quantity there. Oscar still learning and I think Garlo is happier Playing back.

It was Wagner.

And yes, Mitchie was very good.  He's not one I have pencilled in, so I don't mention him, but I should.

I love that the likes of Terlich and Matt Jones are training out of their skins. These guys have to be to get a game and it means that guys who we consider above them in the pecking order also have to lift their game because of the competition for their spots.

It is highly unlikely to happen but I'm barracking for both Terlich and M. Jones to show significant development and become top 15 players in a rising Melbourne side this year. Some on here have been particularly unkind about these two. For whatever their failings both are competitors who have played well above the pay scale in the past. It would be nice if they could shut up some of their harsher critics

He told me before Xmas he thought he was still growing height wise, they are also building him up, but don"t want him too heavy

The rehab group is quite big because as I've stated previously the slightest niggle and you are in rehab

You must remember Wiseblood not all of us still live with our mothers, as I have stated before I post for people who want to read it, I teally don't care who doesn't. I used to enjoy jousting with you, but I am bored with it now, a battle of wits with an unarmed man can become tedious, if you want to ask a question about training I will endeavour to answer it, if not would appreciate if you kept your inane comments to yourself, this topic is about training which some of us attend and provide reports, unfortunately some of us don't share the same opinion of some players that you do, you will have to live with it, when you are proved correct about a playetr, which according to you invariably happens you will be allowed to gloat

I am waiting with bated something for your first training report for this year, that's if mum will let you out to play with the big boys of course.

I saw that shot by Frost. He missed the behind post by 15m. The sooner he nails a set shot routine, the better.

Agree about Viv.

This is the best training thread I've read in a long while. Thanks to those who've provided training reports.

The performance of Terlich in the match sim has really surprised me. He's clearly had a good preseason. Suspect he knows it's his last chance and is approaching this year accordingly.

That said, I've never had Matt Jones and Terlich in the same category. I reckon Matt Jones is a good player who can perform a role in the seniors. Think he's unfairly maligned by many here.

The performance of Frost as CHF also comes as a pleasant surprise. I know he's a great athlete etc, but it seems he's starting to deliver more than that. If he can become a decent CHF, our forward line will be very effective/dangerous this year.

Exciting times ahead. Hope that injury list reduces. Kind of immediately.

Matt Jones biggest problem is disposal and he gives away dumb free kicks, the one against Murphy is the perfect example, he just jumps on their heads trying to tackle them.

Terlich runs at a million miles an hour and boots the ball I sometimes think his brain doesn't function once he gets over a certain speed. Often when not running at full speed he takes good options and generally hits the target. But mostly goes for safer kicks.

Depth players I believe if we are to become a top 8 side.

We're all individuals.

I've committed this year to avoid the petty  barbs with people I've never met and just try and post positively about the club.

Cheers to yourself and everyone else who scribes anything about training.

I reckon we're in for a cracker of a season.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
