Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Assuming that all of the players above are fit, I'd be surprised if this wasn't our round 1 team.

Lumumba will be in the team if fit, and given that he played at Casey yesterday ...

Possibly, and as much as I'd like to see Garland replaced, it won't happen, so who does get replaced?

During this NAB Cup, our backline has been our achilles heel, but I'm not sure that Lumumba addresses the problem.

I don't mind Vince playing at HBF, and rotating on the Kick outs as well. Kicks like a mule, generally delivers to our advantage and can play tight when required...

Garland won't be replaced, he's not in the leadership group and consistently in the top 10 in the B&F for nothing, regardless of what Demonlanders think. All Garland needs is to play alongside Dunn (kicking) or Lumumba (run).

Lumumba's run sometimes gets him into trouble, but that real hell-for-leather attack off half-back is something that no-one else does.

The problem is that we've got too many in the backline that cough the ball up. Lumumba will just add to the list.

I've said it all preseason. Rotate Vince and Brayshaw off half back and through the middle. Both are cool heads under pressure with good disposal.

I actually like your lineup CHF. Something about Vandenberg starting as an on baller has me genuinely excited. He is an absolute brute and can't wait to see him run through a couple of GWS kids.

Probably has a few GWS bunnies from his NEAFL days

Sad to say but I don't think Grimes has done himself any favours with his NAB form. Seems to lack intensity and urgency. He now is probably only a depth player.

He's definitely fringe given the players who are due to return from injury.

Nice Lucifer.

This is my preferred 22 - looking forward to Petracca putting selection pressure on the forwards.

M Jones unlucky as I thought he showed he has really improved.

The majority of that team love the contest and will not be intimidated.

Nice that our younger players can get some continuity by developing together at Casey.  Looks a Handy sort of side too (though I think guys like Smith & King will play mainly Casey seconds). - Also not sure on the injury status of White & Newton.

There are definitely dilemma's aren't there.

On last years form Lumumba is nowhere near my best 22 but he might really benefit from the new game plan.  Interestingly for a mature body I just don't see him as the sort of competitor that fits with our philosophy.

I also wonder if you need both Frost and Pedersen now that Watts seems to be a genuine threat in the air.  Pedo might miss anyway.

And I agree that Harmes is competing with Kennedy and Kent but I think he plays.  All have staked good claims to a spot but Harmes brings what the other two don't which is a threat in the air. He's also a better kick than Kennedy.  If Lumumba misses Vince can move back allowing a spot for Harmes.  What will happen when Petracca and Trenners are fit (yes, I've decided to just assume that happens) I don't know.  With a fit list there will be some very disappointed players.  I'm still hoping that Billy Stretch pushes but he's not in line for a spot yet.  Perhaps like some other clubs he'll spend 2 or 3 years at Casey and then just come in a look the part.  What is clear is we've move past playing guys that "do a few nice things" to players who contribute at AFL level for the whole game. That will take me some time to get my head around.

Interesting times ahead.

Demonlad5 posted a team that didn't include Oliver, but it's hard to argue with the logic.

Oliver is in my team, but I can't remember it being more difficult to post a 22.

Nice dilemma to have as opposed to having to pick from a bunch of NQRs or underdeveloped juniors.

Goodwin thought Oliver was a little sloppy in the first half, and certainly the entire side made a slow start (that's three from three- let's see if we can't fix that for the season proper).  The Saints were on top in the clearances early, we came back stronger in the second half - Oliver is the most exciting genuine inside mid I can remember for a long time.  It's not hard to see why people compare him with Brayshaw in terms of potential impact.  Both hard at it, uncompromising and excellent decision makers.  He Is the best handball exponent we've had since Alan Jarrot. (well OK, we might have had some others since the mid 80s)

On NAB form, if Pedersen plays does Frost play? Is he adding enough?

I was thinking the same. It's almost like the total output of Pedersen and Frost over the course of a game is equal to the output of one good KPF. Neither impose themselves over the whole game. But both have to play because one of them has to be a relief ruckman for Gawn.

RND - 1 team, based on fitness, form, availability?

FB: Garland  Dunn  Jetta

HB: Salem    TMc   Vince

  C: MJones  Oliver   Tyson

HF: Kennedy Hogan Kent

FF: Pederson Watts Garlett

Foll's: Gawn  Jones  Viney

IntCh:  AVdb  Bugg  Harmes  Michie

Emerg:  Frost

* as Hogan is currently a bit out of touch I have him upfield away from FF,  so he can run thru the middle to find the footy & touch.

* so with this I'm starting Watts as a mobile FF,  forward of the square.

* Pedo in the pocket,  I don't want him to stray too high in an open & quick forwardline,  saving his legs,  & to switch with Gawn a couple of times per Qtr.

I have Brayshaw, Lamumba, Trengove, Patracca all as underdone, so will get fit at Casey.

Structure and flexibility.  Frost is insurance up forward, down back or in the ruck, he's also athletic enough not to lose any run by leaving him on the ground for extended periods.  He's not getting a lot of it at the moment, but I can see why he'd be picked.  A work in progress. There's talk that various sides might go with four talls at various stages to stretch sides.  Lumumba is just not good enough one on one to play tall.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to
