Who will form our leadership group in 2016?

Leave Viney go another year, too early for him and we don't need to make the call yet.

Let him keep developing his game, he really stepped up this year and we should expect further improvement next season without the external pressure of leadership..

I think Brayshaw shows all the signs of a future leader.

Too early now, but would be pushing in 4 years as well.

Viney and Brayshaw co-captaincy in 3 - 4 years time.

Yes please.

I would think the new Leadership Group will be announced over the next few weeks.

I'm wondering whether Gawn might be a smokey for the LG?

He has cemented his place in the side, is highly regarded by coaches and players and in a position to motivate on and off the field.

Even tho only 24 he is a senior player, based on our age profile and experience at our club.

With Hogan and Tom McDonald as their deputy's

Hogan? He has as much leadership as Dane Swan. Doesn't interest him and is one of the more chilled out blokes at the club. While it never made it out onto the media Tom Mcdonald got inducted into the leadership group last year.

Nev Jetta is my big smoky. Hugely respected amongst the playing group and i know he has been doing a fair bit of mentoring with Christian Salem and alot of the young kids.

Look for Bernie to be in the Leadership Team:  http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-01-22/vince-wants-to-step-up-further-after-taking-ownership-of-the-footy-club-in-2015?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=RSS+feed%3A+AFL+Latest+News

I really like the frank interviews we are getting from the players this year - very few, if any platitudes.

I particularly liked this comment from him for both the confidence and the intent"With less rotations this year we'll (midfielders) have to spend a bit more time forward and back so we'll kick more goals now because of that"

I understand where you are coming from rjay, but I reckon Jack will take the extra formal responsibility in his stride ........ thrive on it in fact!  No need to hold him back imo.

I can understand your point now 'Dee', I think you are right. Just watching him at training and now that he is right on the program with the FD then if they select him for the leadership group I'm good with that.

So long as he doesn't try and take everything on himself again. Roos is one of the best things that could happen for his career and he will know if the times right.

In hindsight Neeld letting him speak out to the team after a disappointing loss in his first game was a big mistake. Roos would never let a kid take on that responsibility. Just another mistake from a rookie coach to go with the captains...

Leadership group Imo

Jones (c)

Dunn (VC)

Mcdonald

Dawes

Lumumba

Trengove ( might seem a strange call, but the leadership he showed last year, on top of how good a leader he has always been, i see him as easily in the top 3 leaders at the club. )

Thats a sad looking list Griff. reflective of our standing in the footy world I reckon. Some very ordinary players in that lot, and one or 2 who may  see very limited game time.

Trengove?  Wow, terrible choice. Will be lucky to play again at the top level. Dont lump extra responsibility on him yet. Needs to make it on the park, and show he can be a footballer first.

Ok after the comments made by Roos (about waiting to see the games) and by Vince about stepping up, I'd say.

Jones, Viney, McDonald for sure.

Keep Dunny, but get him to remain focussed on his own game as well this year. Give Bernie the chance if he wants it and has worked for it.

That would be 5, probably only need 1 or 2 more, if Garland or Grimes play well in the Nab challenge they are great clubmen and have to be considered. On the other hand i don't think Dawes or Lumumba will be fit to play well and should focus on their own games.

If there needs to be another candidate I'd consider Nev Jetta.

Then from way out in left field, but screw the haters (which I'm one of), if Jack Watts can finally fix the fatal flaws that limit his game then put him in. There's no one more Melbourne than him, for good and for bad. Very left field and unlikely and he has to earn it with toughness, maybe not this year but it could happen.

I still think it's to early to be appointing guys like Viney to the leadership group, and while i agree Trengove may not make it back, i think it'd be pretty hard to dispute that based on who we have, that he isn't in the best handful of leaders.

Viney's ready. Roos and co have trained him to play a role and developed his game, with another preseason under his belt he should be comfortable at AFL level and ready to consistently impact. He would've won the B+F in a canter if he didn't miss games last year.

Trenners is definitely a great leader, but it's just not fair to have any extra pressure on him.

Cant lead from the stands Griff.

Viney is exactly the type to inspire, like good leaders do. None of that list, with the exception of Jones, does anything to inspire.Just because we made a mistake with Grimes (Trenners exempt due to injury), shouldnt exclude Viney from getting a look in. He appears to have a mental toughness that Grimes could only dream about.

And I cant see any reason for Lamumba to be in the leadership group this season. He is not a leader just because he has a premiership medallion. He shows stuff-all else.

Jones - C

Dunn - need the experienced hand but not sure about VC - that honour may go to Bernie

Lumumba - had a tough year but deserves another go to show the way

Vince - wants it, has earned it.

McD - ready to step up

Gawn - my smokey

I don't have Viney.  It seems, last year he really listened to coaches and improved various aspects of his game.  I would give him a bit more time to further  this.

Some clubs have a 'Leaders In Waiting' group.  I don't know that we need to formerly create/announce one but I can see that within the club, Viney leads a group with the likes of Brayshaw, Hogan, ANB being his L.I.W. team.  Set them up for when they take over from the first 4 in my list above!

Pretty alarming article by Vince saying the only ones who really use their voice is Jones and Dunn.. Its quite obvious our leadership is still lacking in this area especially on game days. Yes players can lead through actions but voice is very very important especially with a young side like ours.

This is why i wish we never got rid of Daniel Cross. Right up until his last game he was still showing real on field leadership. I also thought we should have at least rookied Jed Adcock. With Jamar and Cross as two senior veterans now gone i feel we are now lacking a bit of leadership and Voice on and off field.

Not entirely accurate.

"Some guys really stand out in that area – Jonesy and Dunny are the A-graders at it," Vince said.

"We've got a lot of C-Graders when it comes to using our voices and we need everyone to improve in that area.

"We don't expect everyone to be as good as [Jones and Dunn], but if you're a C-Grader you need to become a B-Grader. If you're a B-Grader you should aspire to become an A-grader.

It's an area for improvement is what I took away from it. Not that Dunn and Jines are the only ones out there talking. Vince isn't going to name himself but you can assume he's also close to being an "A grader".

It's blokes like Tyson and Viney that need to step up in this regard. It's unfair to heap it on Brayshaw so early but I would think and hope he's gaining respect pretty quickly. I also doubt Petracca is going to be a wallflower.

Jamar wasn't even playing in the first team and whilst I love Crossy, he didn't hit the finish line with with a flourish. He was noticeably starting to slow down and his skills were falling away. The timing was right Imo.

Vince and Viney are two clear inclusions in the LG for 2016, with T Mac a possibility.

Bernie Vince is a gem.  Just like Crossy he came over to the club and totally embraced it.  A stroke of genius getting him to the club.

My leadership group would include Jones (c), Dunn (vc), Vince, Viney, Lumumba and and McDonald.  Some are saying Viney is a little young, but it isn't as if he is being made captain.  Being in the leadership group is a great stepping stone without huge amounts of pressure.  He can handle it.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
