I don't know why, but i'm finding that Curnow and Weideman are the 2 guys i'm hoping we land. Even with the respective D/D incident and underwhelming testing.

Parish just appears to be very vanilla to me. Curnow has X-factor, plus a tank and big body to possibly make it in the mid-field.

Weideman also fills another need for us. KPF who can help out Max in the ruck from time to time.

Some reports have him at 193cm. He has strong hands and has the tank to provide repeated efforts up the ground and back. Hogan, Petracca, Curnow, Garlett sounds like the basis of a good forward line to me with Kent, Watts and vandenBerg playing roles. I'm a fan of McDonald and Frost playing together in the same backline and sharing the second ruck duties.

I like the thinking of drafting two hard tough players again, i'm just not sure Taylor and co will be sold enough on the very limited good form Oliver has shown vs players who have shown as much, only over a longer period of time.

I'm almost certain we will take one of Parish or Oliver pick 3. There will be a forward available at 7 and they will know it.

I think you're probably spot on, ultimately a lot of it is luck

If you watch some of Curnow's highlights, some of his disposal, especially by foot is terrible. I can see the X-factor, big-bodied endurance athlete benefits but if he doesn't have average to above average disposal by foot is there a benefit of taking him with the view of turning him into a big bodied midfielder?

don't be blinded by toughness. plenty of tough afl players who turn out quite average footballers

Curnow will not become a midfielder at AFL level. He isn't clean with his hands on the deck, doesn't think quickly enough under pressure and has below average skills. His only chance is as a lead up forward who runs his opponent into the ground and clunks marks over and over.

True, we definitely need players who have toughness but also the skills to go with it. Riley and Tapscott were tough players but very limited otherwise. Didn't get to see enough of Tapscott, but Riley was ferocious at the contest but didn't have the game sense or skills to go with it. A player like Viney would be an example of mix between toughness and skills. He still has a long way to go in terms of foot disposal but seems to be improving.

As much as I want to know who we are picking I love that the club is holding it's cards so close.

This quote from this article is the best thing I've seen written about this draft, and why there's such a diversity of opinions and a lot of uncertainty:

"this is the sort of draft where a lot of players have one or two stand-out qualities but either obvious flaws or not enough of the other things they'll need, making them hard to separate and place."

I guess it's also why there's so many comments along the lines of "I prefer X, but I wouldn't lose any sleep if we picked Y."

About the only thing I'm not sure about picks 3 and 7 is that its much easier having 2 and 3.

Curnow will not become a midfielder at AFL level. He isn't clean with his hands on the deck, doesn't think quickly enough under pressure and has below average skills. His only chance is as a lead up forward who runs his opponent into the ground and clunks marks over and over.

Can you imagine Roughead as a midfielder at 18? Would've been terrible. I think Curnow has more midfield potential than just his running ability. He seems to know how to throw his body in naturally and I think he does ok when linking up. Plenty of deficiencies, but a lot can be taught if he has the appetite to learn things like how to pick it up and how to handball on his left.

But to get to 50 games at AFL and start to feel comfortable he'll have to make it as a forward first, that I agree with. So he'll have to get the ball on the lead as well as learn how to out body much stronger opponents. Which is something he can do because even at 191 he looks like he'll have strong endurance mixed with a very solid frame.
