I don't think there been a more controversy marred final season from a future Hall of Fame player. As a player he had so much great ability and adaptability to the modern game, he was versatile and skillful, and as he showed in the 2012 GF could be a game changer even carrying an injury.

It's sad to see that his other side take away from such a great player, some of it I agreed with some of it I didn't. I certainly didn't agree with his final treatment towards the end. I can understand why he has turned down the opportunity to be a part of the motorcade, it could hijack the entire week and my gut tells me he would be booed, even if it was a minority, it would be a bad look for him and the day. I wish he had made the call earlier so he could be chaired off by his teammates and cheered by the Sydney fans, he deserved that much.

Well done for a fantastic career.

(Also haven't forgiven him for elbowing Simon Godfrey behind the ball! :P)

Interestingly enough - if you look at Australian of the year - 8 have been indigenous Australian.

I would suggest that 4 of them gained fame directly through their work with Indigenous communities. 3 were sportsmen who gained fame through sport and and also worked with/ brought attention to Indigenous issues. The other being the singer with Yothu Yindi. It is pure guesswork either way as to whether Goodes would have gained the traction he did if not for his football profile as their is evidence to support both opinions in the list.

As to his football - a champion, no doubt but will always sit in the bunch with the champions like Chris Judd's who few blemishes just didn't sit right with me. To me Leigh Matthews was the best footballer I have ever seen but I wouldn't call him an "ornament to the game" as he also had some blemishes. I use Robbie Flower as my benchmark - a champion football both in skill, application and the way he went about it at all times.

His effort in the 2012 GF was incredible

Goodes had the perfect "Tank" for the Fwd line or the Back line

Personally i wish he had not been made Australian of the Year. I don't think any Sports Person should be that.

Scientists, Doctors or Fireman etc are the recipents of such awards.

Will be interesting to see what he does now

I am sure he is sweating on the MRP findings from last night

It was a pretty ordinary piece of play....

The MRP set their precedent last week for kicking or fending off with the feet.......until some poor bugger gets his leg broken, then in their typical reactionary manner they will come down hard (depending of course on who is the assailant and for whom they play and what time in the season it occurs) stating that fending off with the feet in unacceptable and un-Australian and deserves the harshest penalty.

I am not going to allow this conversation to be dictated to by bigots.

This thread was opened as a tribute to a great Australian and a great footballer.

Don't bother posting if you intend to sink into the mire as LG mentioned above.

If you do, it could well be your last post here.

May I be as bold as to ask yourself why we dont have an area for NON Melbourne players..an AFL board perhaps

This isnt about Melb..its not about trading.. is it

we need a General AFL board or similar I suggest for all the stuff that ISNT Melbourne..and isnt about trade

I for one am sick to death of reading about this bloke. I know I dont have to ..and thats easier if not here..just saying

So we need to create an entirely separate board so that you're not tempted to read threads which sicken you to death?

Hard to argue with that kind of compelling logic.

theres plenty of threads which would be better located in a general AFL board. Other forums have it.. can you address the actual question without prejudice

keep in mind the description of this Board

You may be so bold. The Melbourne Demons are part of a competition of 18 clubs so it's appropriate to discuss them as part of the competition just as we have discussed issues such as the Essendon drug scandal here. In regard to the latter, I don't recall anyone arguing for a separate board although it might have happened.

Spare me. Don't go the the thread if it is a problem for you. As WJ said this is a thread to celebrate one of the greats. I for one never go to the general boards and to bury it there would be an insult.

I didn't actually know there is a general AFL board, I thought it was just general topics of discussion but most AFL discussion goes here anyway. I honestly don't see why this is an issue.

This board has been used for general AFL topics for a very long time without any objections I'm aware of. The No T$ No B$ Thread has been running for 4 years! And yet it's this thread you object to. I get it.

I thought its possibly time to look at moving all NON core threads to an AFL one..thats my opinion. WJ has ruled , so be it

Adam Goodes is a legend. Well done . Had a great career, good luck in the future. Close thread.

No you can scoot along now you have had your 2 cents worth, as WJ said this is a thread dedicating to a fantastic footballer and bloke. I am sure there are many more on here who want to write a tribute still.

Adam Goodes is now to some, but will truly come to historically represent the most iconic figure in Australian Rules Football since Tom Wills as the nominated creator of the game.

As a man of both Indigenous and Colonial heritage, in a game which by many is considered to have some roots in the Indigenous game of Marngrook filtered through a British sporting awareness, he perfectly harmonised those two influences.

As the figurehead of all that is remarkable about the percentage over-representation (~ 8 times) of indigenous players in our only indigenous national sport, he was twice awarded the best and fairest player in the land. As some have stated here, he was arguably the perfect fit for our game, and the perfect example of an indigenous talent. Skill, size, strength, speed, endurance, and durability, with a mercurial awareness and an inspirational influence on his teammates, he played for and captained the first club of the modern era, The Sydney Swans. A club from the birthplace of the game, the first to take the premier competition to the whole nation, he won two premierships with that pioneering club, and after decades without the ultimate prize.

He remained a one club player, which is still and will remain a measure of loyalty despite growing commercialisation.

He was awarded Australian Of The Year for everything that he unconsciously represents (sorry stuie, but footy is at the heart of his award, and rightfully so) and has chosen to represent.

Make no mistake, Adam Goodes is monumental to and exemplary of everything that this game is, and strives to be.

It's our privilege that we saw him play and create history.

Honestly, this fawning is just pathetic.

While I don't necessarily agree with the line you bolded (I think Nicky Winmar's raising of his jumper made him possibly a greater icon), Goodes will certainly go down in AFL history as one of the greatest. As far as the your statement regarding the fawning over Goodes being pathetic, it is light years ahead (in worthiness) of the constant belittling of Goodes and his achievements; now that IS pathetic.

In fariness to those that have criticised Goodes I haven't seen any that have criticised Goodes for his playing career.

Whatever your stance on Goodes, start of the fourth paragraph "The dual Brownlow winner has always avoided the limelight"....

Apparently we are not allowed to criticise him in this thread, I would not be suprised to see your post deleted by WJ because of the section I have highlighted from your post...

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt
