2015 Player Review - # 18 Daniel Cross

"Cross final season was not surprisingly another ultra-reliable season. In his second last game, he notched up an equal career-best 39 disposals. Cross ability to finish in the top six means he has now finished in the top 10 of an AFL club best and fairest on 10 occasions. Eight of them have been top six finishes an indication of his remarkable consistency."

IMO, Crossy was a great pick-up given the state of our list at the time we recruited him. He made a valuable contribution on the field, and (from all reports) an even greater one on the track. It's always sad when a great veteran gets a 'tap on the shoulder', but in Crossy's case, I really think it was time for him to move on, and leave the on-field stuff to the younger brigade who will be part of our future. He retired as a clear 'best 22' and that's how his playing time at Melbourne should be remembered (much the same as when he 'retired' from the Bulldogs two years earlier). Having said that, I really hope he remains a Demon in an off-field capacity, where his professionalism can still be of great value. Well done Daniel, on a great career across two clubs..

Well done, Daniel. You have wrung every ounce out of yourself. You have the true respect of the Melbourne Football Club after only two years.

If there's a person who follows the AFL who doesn't respect your drive and application, they have obviously never seen you play.

Hopefully you'll be able to mentor the next generation of AFL players to be as bloody-minded as you were.

Hopefully he mentors the next generation of MELBOURNE players. Love to see Crossy replace Miller at Casey but in a playing role like Byrnes!

Gave everything he had to the club and the reception he received in the final game is evidence of the high esteem in which he is held.

That said, he looked dreadfully slow by year's end and his disposal had slipped alarmingly, so the decision not to offer a new contract was the right one.

I wish him well for whatever comes next.

Could have had one more year in my books, but have to make tough calls i guess. Hope it doesn't bite us in the butt.

Rumours saying he will stay with us in some sort of mentoring role.

Is taking on a fitness role with the club.

If this is true then Crossy will certainly lead by example. An incredibly fit guy. Thanks Daniel for your great contribution to the MFC over the past two years. We will certainly miss those timely intercepts on the backline and your leadership on and off the field. A true champion.

  • 2 weeks later...

I might be able to accept this decision (with a lot of reservations) if some of the 2009 onwards 1st round draft class get given their marching orders.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was
