Changes v the Roos

Recommended Posts

In - Newton

Out - Michie

Think Salem needs another full game at Casey, just a gut feel.

No point keeping Michie in the team when we are stacked for great contested ball winning mids already. Newton give us more outside skill and can kick a goal.

Grimes is a yard off the pace. His disposal is so poor. I don't think he has a place anymore. Michie adds nothing. So I think both can be replaced.

I also am worried about Dom Tyson. Not suggesting we drop him. But his awareness and reluctance to release the ball and use the 1st option is costing us. He also does some pretty handy work. He must improve this aspect of his game though. He is constantly getting caught With the ball.

I'M CALLIN IT !!......WHITE FOR GRIMES!!!!

With only one change after an abysmal effort agaiunst the saints why would there be more after a six goal win against the Pies?

Assuming no injuries One at the most.

Mitchie out, he is not AFL level at this stage

In: Who knows but I doubt Salem he has been out for months with leg problems doubt he will have the stamina for AFL after onlky two games.

Of all weeks this might be one for another tall. Could be Jamar's chance to come into the side at the expense of one of our little guys. Although with Fitzy playing well - maybe he'll come in and play on the tall forwards.

Just a heads up to the few calling for Grimes to be dropped, this is the thread for round 19, 2015 vs the Roos.

Grimes has been amongst our best players the last two weeks, let go of the bias.

I am one of those suggesting dropping Grimes, but I can't see it being due to bias, especially considering I have defended him strongly here recently and was quite happy with his game.

That said, Norf have a tall forward line, I would go with a tall backline, bringing Fitzy in to play on Petrie all day, so as a defender and then second ruck. Grimes would be the unlucky member out of our back 6 due to this.

Salem also in for Michie, he can share duties with Cross between midfield and HBF

agree, some people can't accept that they were wrong & that he has made the improvements required.

And that one change was met with such anger and disdain on here too, as if the message to the players was "that's acceptable".

I am sure poor coaches think like that, thankfully we have Paul Roos in charge.

Grimes screwed up more than I would like and he doesn't look to be a part of the future, but he was good and should remain. Michie doesn't get much time does he? We rely so heavily on our top mids, I can't wait to get Petracca and Salem in there in the next few years...

Agree! He still butchers it on occasion but you cannot question - his endeavour, courage, ability to read the game, make position and yes ... knowledge to stand up and be counted when required.

BBO that is a very profound statement from you. I am impressed most likely because I agree.

Watching the replay did Grimes no favours at all. Turnovers, getting run down, bad handballs.

Michie was ok. But he just doesn't get enough of it or do enough with it. He needs to play in the guts but hasn't nailed a spot there.

The questions are:

1. Do we have anyone better?

2. Do we have the required level of fitness if we add Newton or Salem compared to Grimes who makes mistakes but does cover a lot of ground

3. Do we need to play Michie and/or Grimes to work out where they are at

At this stage:

In: Salem, Newton

Out: Grimes, Michie

With Salem, Newton, ANB or even Brayshaw as sub. I think it's smart not alarmist to suggest Brayshaw needs to be sub or the week off at some stage this year.

I like your ins and outs.

My only reservation is do we need Fitzy in to give Gawn more of a breather and counter their talls down back?

I'm undecided, but I'd like to see more of Newton and Salem's a given, even if he's the sub.

I still want to see more of Michie but he didn't help his cause on Saturday.

Fitzy on Brown would make sense. They're both a little um ungainly and would be up against each other as relief ruck.

Grimes did his job he butched a few and was caught with the ball a few times, but they so did a lot of other players. He has done enough to keep his spot, needs to work on his awareness, but also needs players to give him the ball when his free not in the middle of traffic. I would like to see mitchy given another game, though I think we need another tall/ruck in this week against norf, Fitzy would be my first choice.

From reading the Casey thread etc., would be surprised if Salem gets a call up this week. Has missed a lot of footy.

White probably not ready, not sure what's going on with Toumpas, maybe the knock he had the previous week has set him back a bit because the first half review on him from that week was excellent.

Which probably only leaves Fitzy - who played a stellar half of VFL footy then disappeared.

Which is interesting, especially for those who say we haven't improved: we're not considering Bail, M Jones, Terlich or McKenzie, who not that long ago were automatic starters.

Was an extremely reliable mark in defence yesterday too.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
