Roosy on AFL 360 looked and sounded downcast.

He said that he's never been to club that feels a loss so badly.

He couldn't explain it - alluding to several years of residual pain.

Said that everyone digs in and looks to improve.

maybe dan can provide a few shovels?

He is down cast he should try living out here in supporter land without the warmth of $1.5 mill PA.

Sorry, but not all of us. But nobody wanted to listen. I still think Roos has been a positive. But it worries me that he might be "yesterdays" man,

Do you think stoppages might become more of the norm next year BB if the AFL scrap the sub and cap the interchange at 80-100?

we were so desperate to get a high profile coach we accepted any deal on the table & didn't give ourselves a out option, very much like the Blight deal Roos was very clear that he never wanted to coach, I'm sure alarm bells were ringing for many when he said l'll stay for 2 maybe 3 years.

3 years out of coaching in modern football is a long time & was a big risk, we have seen nothing on field that couldn't be replicated by any other junior coach, we are stuck with the deal for another year, after that we will start from scratch again, there will be no succession plan Goodwin take over and do it his way, it will be his time his way.

Roos might have made some mistakes on game day, but some of the revisionist history in this thread is ridiculous.

People saying going after Roos was a mistake, the same year Neeld was sacked? The same year the club was on its knees? Spare me.

To get any respectable coach to come near us we had to pay big $$'s simple as that. What sort of miracles is everyone expecting when players cannot kick the ball 30 meters to their own team, or hand pass more than 2 feet, even when they do they handpass it to their team mates feet or above their head. really the skills and endeavour of the players is where the problem is. Who do you think you are going to get and for how much if Roos goes, malthouse $1m. I am happy with Roos he has attempted to teach them the basics, he has stopped many of the huge losses and he has brought us close to so many wins that the players just seemed to let slip. If we had won some of those close ones we would have been rapt, unfortunately we still carry a lot of unskilful and mediocre players who cannot reach the heights required for AFL football.

Roos has reasonably good plans, just does not have the players who can execute it consistently. The best teams run all hard for each contest, our players jog along side trying to protect space rather than attack the man with the ball. players have not learnt to tackle by grabbing their opponents arm instead of just putting their arm around them. Too many players now just lift their arm and get a quick high tackle, or they just break our players weak tackles and waltz into goal.

Right before the bounce at the Geelong game David King (or someone at Fox Footy) revealed that Melbourne said they will not allow Geelong to play a loose man.

We all know the result.

Why has the same approach not been taken in all other games since?

"The whole club goes into meltdown after a loss"

Isn't it a large part of his job to create calm and maintain perspective?

I'm not sure what he can say that's any different at this point, but repeating ad nauseum about the weight of the past affecting the whole club is getting really, really tiresome.

I like Roosy but I might just stop listening to him for a few weeks, cause it's all sounding pretty hollow and repetitive.

Roosy has always maintained a certain distance from the mfc in all his external media especially 360 it has never sat right with me it's like media options and Brand Paul roos is number one priority.can't blame the bloke for that but I feel guys like clarko and Beveridge are all in 100 % of the time I just don't think roos is. I can pick it up and deep down I think the players whilst respect and admire roos in so many ways do too and knowing he it's leaving in 12 months does not help despite all the spin about succession plan

I don't see anything wrong with this.

I do he is distancing himself from the club he coaches. It should be " it was a tough loss we are taking it it hard.... we will week hard to improve" etc etc

What else can he really do though?

Roos was a last resort. We all knew that.

Nothing he has said is wrong.

You can even tell through the club's media department that a loss is treated like the sky is falling. There's no trust in one another, no trust in the plan, the end goal.

I get that when the club wins it's happy happy times, but fans are treated with contempt. It's understandable: you can't really spin losses anymore after 10 years.

We always seem to come out of the doldrums, pick o ourselves up momentarily, but then crumble and break down again.

Roos is a pro, a person that has expectations.

When you enter a toxic environment, sometimes it can't be saved.

He is a change manager: nothing more. He is assisting the club into the next phase. Of course he isn't fully invested.

But he's as lost as we are that we can still be this bad. I don't think he expected it.

How can you go one week playing like champions, to being so utterly, utterly inept?

I would not want to work at Melbourne Football Club. It's a career killer.

If this were the corporate world, there'd have been a merger or acquisition long away. The club has plenty of assets but unfortunately I fear it is beyond saving.

I'm quite gobsmacked to be honest. I think we've been witnessing this club's death for the past 4 years. It's been slow, painful.

Meh. I'm here for the ride. Don't cry for me: I'm already dead.

I just see no good coming out of this CONSTANT reference to the past bogging everyone down. It's a self fulfilling prophecy.

"I don't want to mention it but..."

So don't then. Prefacing your statement with that doesn't make a difference. You're talking about it. Continually. So stop doing it. It's just deflection at this point.

Talk about where things went wrong on the weekend and what you're doing to fix them. That's your job. There was a lot of talk pre-season about a greater attacking intent this year. That has been a pretty dismal failure. Why? What are you doing to fix it?

Supporters don't meltdown over a loss. They meltdown over a largely non-competitive loss against a fellow developing side. And rightly so. We need to have moved past performances like we saw on the weekend.

Roos was asked if the development is real. He used it to bring up the past. Again. It's disappointing.

So Roos providing a financially struggling club some guaranteed media exposure on the highest profile nightly AFL news show, while simultaneously media managing the poor PR of our club, is somehow a bad thing.

Glad we've cleared that up.

Had a reply email from Peter Jackson today. It was quite a long response. He preached patience and stressed that we have already turned over 22 players and more changes are needed. He also spoke about it being 'a long journey' and that he got frustrated when players played like they did yesterday too. He also pointed out how young our list is and that the players do need to become more consistent.

I am not saying I agree with him but at least it shows that he cares about this club. I admire his passion.

Love Peter Jackson.

Oh, and while I'm at it Roos said "the worse it got the more interested I got". Why? Did the money go up?

You just got to wonder if we got sucked into the messiah complex again.

Having said that, I supported and was happy with the appointment. That should worry everyone!

Because he likes a challenge. Would also play to his ego. I think you're worrying for worrying sake, BB. We'll get there. The tables will turn soon.

I could listen to Buckley for a full episode of 360 and was pleased the Gerard directed much of the conversation at him.

Roos has added nothing to the segment this season other than recalling history in an attempt to deflect and responsibility from his own performance as senior coach.

He's started to clutch out and I'll be very surprised if he doesn't handover to Goodwin for 2016.

On a side note out of all the coaches in the league I like hearing Damien Hardwick the most. He's got a great temperament and always sounds interesting when interviewed

I think you will see goodwin will be the coach and roos do all the media stuff, roos will take take the heat and goodwill will coach,a bit like Dave parkin at Carlton in his last year.

I find myself agreeing with Nathan Buckley nearly 100% of the time. He is thoughtful, articulates his points well and isn't afraid to tell it as it is. His disdain for Robbo also helps.

Roos has been far less impressive IMO all year on 360. Says a lot without actually saying anything most of the time.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
