Was reading a forum a while ago about who was the best radio/Tv radio in the business so thought id ask around here to get who everyone liked to listen to.

I can't stand channel 7 anymore. The Saturday night team are a joke, the way they just ramble on about other stuff instead of just commentating on the game. They are so ridiculous bias on certain teams its beyond the joke. I like listening to Dennis still at least he calls the game without any bias towards it and pretending he is a coach. Nick Maxwell special comments on Collingwood is worse then Eddie..!

Some might find this surprising but I don't mind listening to Wayne Carey. He calls it how he sees it and doesn't hold back on anything. I have also noticed he has a soft spot for us and even gave Matthew Lloyd a fair old wack about the comments on Roos coaching. He knows the game well inside out still.

Gotta admit I love listening to the Triple M Saturday rub team before the footy. Its a good laugh with Garry, JB, Spud and the Chief. Spud absolutely gives it to Purple headed warrior every chance he gets. Some of the youtube clips are a good laugh.

Don't mind them too when they call the game, at least they make the game exciting! I also don't mind listening to Garry and Chief as special comments as well. Calls it as they see it just like Carey and won't hold back. Up there as my top number 1 for me.

BT is much better suited to Triple M then the channel 7 team I reckon. Doesn't take himself serious as most of them do on 7 and fits in well with all the others on Triple M

Fox footy can be good at times it just depends who is calling the game. Personally think Anthony Hudson is the best in the business. Especially when the game is exciting and on the edge! I thought he was superb on channel 10 and some of the best games in the mid 2000s featured him a lot.

Dwayne.. Don't get me started..

Sandy Roberts, Unfortunately I think he is out of touch with todays game. He gets so many names wrong its so cringe worthy to listen to and im surprised he doesn't get pulled up a lot. Still like him just needs to sharpen up a bit.

Jonathon Brown. Still 50/50..

Who do you all prefer?

Here's the thing with Dennis. You get the feeling he's pre scripted one of his 'zingers' that, for mine, are increasingly unfunny.

I actually agree re BT. I know many can't stand him but he doesn't have that smug persona of a Der Wayne Wussell or the woodenness of a Luke Darcy. Hudson good, Whately good.

Can't stand the triple m team 'dazzle' but it's just my bias, we all have our likes and dislikes. I actually don't find Lyon insightful in any way shape or form, I think he knows little about the game for such a good player.

It would be easy to pot the bad ones...Dwayne, BT, Dills stupid brother and the illegitimate son of D. Don't get me started on he of little to no intellect Lloyd.

I do enjoy Scotty Lucas but my favourite special comments man by a mile is Wayne Britten. His comments on the game and players are very insightful but apart from that the spray he gave John Elliot a few weeks back was priceless.

I don't listen to the radio a lot but I've always felt that Triple M capture the atmosphere of a good game the best, with a bit of humour thrown on top.

The TV commentary is pretty bad these days. I like Eddie, Sandy, Huddo and Dennis the best.

The worst of the worst are Bas and Hame commentating in tandem. I will actually mute the game if these two are on.

As for special comments, I really like Jonathan Brown. He would make a good coach. Ling is a bit cringe-worthy with some of the things he says but seems like a good bloke. Carey is decent. All the others are rubbish. It annoys me how they get Tim Watson in for Essendon games and Ricciuto for Adelaide. These two are conflicted, despite their best efforts to hide it they should be nowhere near those games.

As long as BT and Bruce McAveney aren't involved them I can deal with it.

BT is a disrespectful, all about him [censored] who doesn't belong on any broadcasting network ever again.

McAvaney has always seemed like the little bloke who is trying too hard to join in with the big boys, but never quite makes it. Sad really, as he is one of the few who has enough respect to actually learn the players names, let alone something about them and the side they play in.

That's fair enough. Each to their own.

Do agree with you on Lloyd though. He is a stain of the highest order. Personally if it was my choice I would give Lloyd the flick before Caro on footy classified. His support and bias commentary on James Tird is tiresome and Cringe worthy at its finest.

Is F_log seriously censored?

The show has lost a lot since Thomas was moved on...he would have been great viewing during this whole Essendon biz.

I like Dermie. The man has a massive ego but he provides a lot of comments that aren't just stating the obvious.

BT shits me up the wall.

Triple M can be entertaining but I get sick of all their in-jokes.

I'm also really sick of commentators getting players' names wrong. Almost all of them do it, and I suppose there are a lot of names to learn, but damn it's frustrating if you're listening on the radio. You have no way of telling if they are calling the right names or not. At least if you're at the game or watching on TV you know when they're wrong.

I agree with the OP on Carey. I'm surprised about how insightful some of his comments are. From what we've seen of his personal life in the papers over the year he didn't seem like an intelligent guy, but he really comes off as very knowledgeable.

Huddo brings the excitement. Bruce is cringeworthy and dated.

I agree on this! I understand he gets a lot of hate on here but I like how he goes right into detail in explaining things.

Don't mind Dermie at all.

7 team should be replaced

Mmm are ordinary

the duck gives an honest account

Sen are not too bad at least they gave a passionate call when we beat the cats . Mmm were unenthusiastic that day as things weren't going to script .

Derm is my favourite . I like dunstall also , they call it how it is no need to invent anything to prove themselves .

Lynchy goes ok and J Brown . Sandy is a legend .

lol

Not knowing a huge amount about the minutia of footy I just assumed he was correct.

I do enjoy him though 'Choke', I think he throws a lot of stuff out there and he gets some right and some wrong. Of course a lot is just opinion stuff and you either agree or disagree.

Still think his question to Christiansen about going home over the break is classic radio. I get a good laugh at that one every time they play it back.

Like: Dennis and Bruce (Good GF team in my eyes), Anthony Hudson, Gerard Whately, Jono Brown and Hamish McLachlan.

Dislike: Brian Taylor, Cameron Ling, Tim Watson, Mark Ricciuto, Nick Maxwell, Dermot Brereton, Eddie Mcguire, Matthew Lloyd and Dwayne Russell.

On radio, my favourite callers - by along way - are the duo of Tim Lane and Tony Leonard on 3AW. Passionate, accurate and with a sense of propriety when necessary.

I find SEN's calls on the whole pretty good except for Kevin Bartlett who calls the game as if it is on TV where you would know when he says "he's got the ball" who the pronoun refers to. On radio, that's just a bit more difficult.

Channel 7 still has a lot of work to do to get the balance right. Individually each of Brian Taylor, Cameron Ling, Luke Darcy and Matthew Richardson can be interesting callers and commentators, but as a team there's too much effort to outdo one another on testosterone levels. If each called the game properly, it would be a much better commentary team. And just to come to their defence, they haven't been helped by being asked to call so many games with the same teams over and over again. There's only so much you can say about an underperforming Carlton.

Warming to Jonathan Brown. Smart and a good personality

Agree Carey has been a surprise. Don't mind Mark Riccuito.

Particularly dislike the Dwaynepipe and the WA commentary team on the ABC.

Posted

I think my ideal TV commentary team would be Hudson and Lane, with Bomba and Carey doing special comments. Richardson on the boundary under the $2 plastic poncho.

Breretons" inanity drives me crazy

My wife goes berserk as soon as she hears him

Cannot believe he gets a job at this level Just appalling!

M. Lloyd has surprised me on the upside since he's gone into the media. In general not afraid of asking hard questions and making strong calls (and generally well considered ones). An asterisk for anything about Essendon, but he's in an unusually difficult position wrt that, and has not handled it too badly all things considered. I liked the way that he put his hand up early on about his diving form as a player.

Like the work of C. Wilson and P. Smith. Caro in particular does her homework, and tries to bring some accountability to the liniment-sniffers in clubland.

Taylor is dreadful - has a very low estimate of the intelligence of the viewer, and burbles on accordingly. I'm not sure he actually likes the game, apart from it being the means for him to be paid big bucks and fly at the front end of the plane (and talk about same). Mute Buttons R Us.

"Richo"? Eddie Haskell without the smarts.

Not one mention of the ABC for radio? Clean, clear, no advertisements ... Hard to beat. If you want to know where the ball is and what's happening on the ground, any of the ABC teams is the one.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
