2015 apparent out of contract players merged with targets at seasons end

I know it's very early, but it's already apparent that we're lacking in certain areas. Most notably in my opinion the ruck, midfield depth, run from half back and spread in general. So i thought i'd start this thread to list certain targets for areas i think need to be addressed.

RUCK

Daniel Gorringe: Down the pecking order at GC who have internal issues. Wanted out last year but was shafted by Port and the Crows now have Jacobs and Lowden. Was an early draft pick and could come on like Longer has at the Saints.

Cost - Possibly something like Toumpas to Crows with their 2nd round pick to GC?

Matthew Leunberger: Dominant ruckman when fit but is injury plauged. Fallen behind Martin as 1st choice ruckman with Lions and may seek more a new home.

Cost - Free agent so cost is zero. Orig from WA so reckon Freo may be in the market for him also with Sandilands not likely to go on forever.

Will Minson: Good aggressive ruckman who is being edged out by Beveridge looking to push Cordy's development. Would only be a stop gap solution for about 2 years max while we develop someone else, but could be useful.

Cost - Is contracted so not sure what we'd have to give up? Bulldogs lack talls at both ends so maybe Fitz or Pedo with a late pick?

Daniel Currie: Dominant state league ruckman who is on North's list and starved of opportunities behind Goldstein and Daw. Could well be worth a look.

Cost - Given the lack of games North have given him, they'd be hard pressed to ask anything more then a 4th round pick.

MIDFIELDER:

Dylan Shiel/Adam Treloar: Obviously there's rumors about these two leaving GWS and would live either one. Both hard at it and spread really well which we need. Would favour Shiel slightly due to his ability to break the lines, but would be wrapt with either.

Cost - Probably something like Howe & our 1st round pick, or possibly given their lack of ruck depth after Mummy we could give them Gawn and our first two picks with a later pick coming back.

James Aish: Looks certain to leave and not sure where we sit in the race for his services. Not a line breaker, but certainly runs hard and will help with our spread. We have a lot of SA kids on the list who would have played with him, so they need to get in his ear.

Cost - Our 1st round pick should do it.

Ben Kennedy

Very talented fast midfielder/forward who has fallen behind some other good kids that Collingwood are putting together. Is small, but can break the lines and use it well. Same as Aish is a SA kid so hopefully that could help?

Cost - Being Collingwood who knows? Maybe if we swap our 1st & 2nd round picks with theirs that could do it? Or maybe Watts and our 2nd round pick?

Dion Prestia

Given Gold Coasts issues it wont hurt asking the question as unlikely as it would be. Brilliant young midfielder who runs hard and will help with spread.

Cost - Given the issues with some of their players they may be after small forwards. Our 1st round pick & Kennedy-Harris could do it.

Andrew Gaff

Question marks over his ability to deal with a tag, but runs hard and very good on the outside which we need.

Cost - 1st round pick and maybe Fitz given their neef for more tall defenders.

RUNNING HALF BACKS:

Zak Jones

Think we made noise in the offseason gone that we'd chase him. Again runs hard and is hard at it. Not sure on what his disposal is like?

Cost - Hard to say? Maybe Grimes and our 2nd round pick?

Nathan Wright

Similar to Zak Jones and can't get a consistant run with Saints. Disposal not brilliant, but works hard and runs fast.

Cost - 3rd or 2nd round pick max!

Interesred to hear what/who others think we should look at?

To compete we really need a free agent or two. We need to win 8 games and attract a Dangerfield. Money no issue and we have an excellent coaching panel.

Without it we cannot rise to even middle of the ladder.

Have been screaming this for 7 yrs. Thought we might have had it with $cully and Trengove after missing with Sylvia and McLean.

Our single biggest failure that we haven't developed an elite midfielder since..........Gerard Healy? Todd V was good but not elite...

Does anyone think Ty Vickery could be a pure ruckman?

Does anyone think Ty Vickery could be a pure ruckman?

No, he's a poor 2nd ruck choice. Has no idea, about as good as Dawes...

Does anyone think Ty Vickery could be a pure ruckman?

No. God no.

How old is Minson? Is he 30 already? Leuenberger is worth a look if he gets through the season unscathed.

I'd like us to dangle that top pick again and see if we get any decent bites.

Does anyone think Ty Vickery could be a pure ruckman?

We may as well pack up and fold if we recruited him for any position.

Can we have Stefan Martin back?

Now it seems he would be worth way more than those two third round picks Brisbane gave to us in exchange for him.

Sydney will be under salary cap pressure. whispers about Hanneberry coming back to Melbourne. Personally I'd prefer Josh Kennedy.

I'd give Sydney Howe and EVERY pick we have for Kennedy.

I'd give Sydney Howe and EVERY pick we have for Kennedy.

We have our own Kennedy developing and i can't see Kennedy leaving for us.

Lets trade for an elite mid field and outside running team and get as much ball as we can into the Hulk with a few decent crumbers (Garlett in short term) to feed off his spillage as he develops into a champ.

Can't afford to waste the opportunity. You can build mega teams around a KP player like Hulk. We also have T-Mac as the other book end now i would love to see us top up the rest of the spine with at least 2 decent inside mids (by hand & foot) and at least one elite outside running mid.

Our list is too top heavy with lumbering ruckman that aren't AFL standard so they would be my first targets for delisting/trade if possible then work down from there.

Dylan Shiel has got to be target number 1

Hoskin Elliot to add some pace, Scott Selwood, Mathew leuenberger, Jon Griffen,Charlie Dixon, Trent Mckenzie, Zac jones

Cognilio Bellchambers Yarran, think Watts and Howe maybe trade bait but hell yes mids pace stoppage kings

The same thing we've needed for years, quality midfielders! Any of Dangerfield, Shiel, Treloar, Coniglio could be on the move and we must land one. I don't care if we have to pay overs, we need quality midfielders and it's not like our current list would demand much of a salary. I'd throw $1,000,000 a year at Shiel. He's got line breaking pace, strong ball winning ability and kicks goals. He's also still young. He'd be the perfect target.

Have been screaming this for 7 yrs. Thought we might have had it with $cully and Trengove after missing with Sylvia and McLean.

Ah, quick mids with pace and grunt?? Lets Clone Nat Fyfe??!

I'd give Sydney Howe and EVERY pick we have for Kennedy.

Except, Josh has three years left (at best). Love him, but no thanks.

The young blokes at GWS and GCS are the ones we should be chasing. Offer two long-term contracts: Hogan $1 mill and Shiel $1 mill. I'd pay Tommy Mac very well too. That would set us up.

I'd give Sydney Howe and EVERY pick we have for Kennedy.

Ridiculously way overs..

Forget Kennedy. Throw that at Shiel or Treloar.

No doubt we need ready made players of proven substance, I think we have some promising youngsters in development but we need immediate impact players (Rucks and Mids). I just don't know what we offer a high quality player, based on our current form. Realistically we are years of a flag. Money may entice them but plenty of clubs will have both cash and premiership potential. Roos has probably been our greatest attraction in the last two drafts but he is gone next year. The ones being mentioned in this thread will be attractive to many clubs. I also have concerns in our ability to keep some of our youngsters. Don't forget they are under the heavy influence of managers who earn their crust from the players payments so loyalty often runs second to the dollar.

  • PREVIEW: Richmond

A few years ago, the Melbourne Football Club produced a documentary about the decade in which it rose from its dystopic purgatory of regular thrashings to the euphoria of a premiership victory. That entire period could have been compressed in a fast motion version of the 2025 season to date as the Demons went from embarrassing basket case to glorious winner in an unexpected victory over the Dockers last Saturday. They transformed in a single week from a team that put in a pedestrian effort of predictably kicking the ball long down the line into attack that made a very ordinary Bombers outfit look like worldbeaters into a slick, fast moving side with urgency and a willingness to handball and create play with shorter kicks and by changing angles to generate an element of chaos that yielded six goals in each of the opening quarters against Freo.

  • NON-MFC: Round 07

Round 7 gets underway in iconic fashion with the traditional ANZAC Day blockbuster. The high-flying Magpies will be looking to solidify their spot atop the ladder, while the Bombers are desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top eight. Later that evening, Fremantle will be out to redeem themselves after a disappointing loss to the Demons, facing a hungry Adelaide side with eyes firmly set on breaking into the top four. Saturday serves up a triple-header of footy action. The Lions will be looking to consolidate their Top 2 spot as they head to Marvel Stadium to clash with the Saints. Over in Adelaide, Port Adelaide will be strong favourites at home against a struggling North Melbourne. The day wraps up with a fiery encounter in Canberra, where the Giants and Bulldogs renew their bitter rivalry. Sunday’s schedule kicks off with the Suns aiming to bounce back from their shock defeat to Richmond, taking on the out of form Swans. Then the Blues will be out to claim a major scalp when they battle the Cats at the MCG. The round finishes with a less-than-thrilling affair between Hawthorn and West Coast at Marvel. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Fremantle

For this year’s Easter Saturday game at the MCG, Simon Goodwin and his Demons wound the clock back a few years to wipe out the horrible memories of last season’s twin thrashings at the hands of the Dockers. And it was about time! Melbourne’s indomitable skipper Max Gawn put in a mammoth performance in shutting out his immediate opponent Sean Darcy in the ruck and around the ground and was a colossus at the end when the game was there to be won or lost. It was won by 16.11.107 to 14.13.97. There was the battery-charged Easter Bunny in Kysaiah Pickett running anyone wearing purple ragged, whether at midfield stoppages or around the big sticks. He finish with a five goal haul.

  • CASEY: UWS Giants

The Casey Demons took on an undefeated UWS Giants outfit at their own home ground on a beautiful autumn day but found themselves completely out of their depth going down by 53 points against a well-drilled and fair superior combination. Despite having 15 AFL listed players at their disposal - far more than in their earlier matches this season - the Demons were never really in the game and suffered their second defeat in a row after their bright start to the season when they drew with the Kangaroos, beat the Suns and matched the Cats for most of the day on their own dung heap at Corio Bay. The Giants were a different proposition altogether. They had a very slight wind advantage in the opening quarter but were too quick off the mark for the Demons, tearing the game apart by the half way mark of the term when they kicked the first five goals with clean and direct football.
