Drafting is a raffle?? Give me a break!! If so Hawthorn have won the raffle every bloody time ! Have never bottomed out and won a truckload of flags!!

Nup apart from few exceptions we have been absolutely Shizenhuisen in our draft strategy and Choices made! Period!

Mitch Thorp, Beau Dowler, Beau Muston, Xavier Ellis just to name a few

Can't be bothered reading all the posts.....

IMO Toumpas has never looked like he belongs at AFL....despite some nice touches.

He was very highly rated...drafting isn't easy, see the Hawthorn shanks above.

Luke Parker was mentioned by someone who was easy to identify.....he went #40 in 2010 draft.

As I said, it aint easy.

thanks DD and I also a believer that if you put a footballer into a poor environment it is not going to help their cause.

I also keep referring back to the Gunston initiation - 2 years behind Roughie and Franklin as the third tall - taking the 3rd best defender from the opposition.

Which forward from our team takes the oppositions best defender ? A 6 gamer in Jesse Hogan.

2010 - hallahan, litherland ( they did pick up a late gem in Puopolo)

2009 - Grimley, Williams, Hooper ( again two late pick ups in Duryea and Stratton)

2008 - Schoenmakers !, Lisle, Lowden, Savage

2007 - they nailed 2007

2006 - thorp, morton ( yeah - they took one of those as well !), Moss

Plenty of misses.....

Luke Parker..

DOMINANT junior at every level.

Smashed the TAC cup.

Captioned Metro.

Displayed a great work rate, physicality, ability to win contested football, good skills.

Ran 15 plus beep tests and displayed superior endurance.

In the case of Parker, IMO sometimes we overlook players who do things consistently well.

There is nothing flashy about Parker, he gets the job done, that is what he does.

This was just a case of recruiters outsmarting themselves, I think the majority would look back and shake their head.

The herd mentality amongst recruiters is also strong, they are only human after all.

Yes that's the key. Draft is hit and miss. They're too young and unproven at the highest level.

Where would you rather spend your time - Port Douglas or Mt Druitt - Hawthorn have the luxury of being a destination of choice when it comes to trading in players from other clubs.

I agree with this but would add that you are dealing with very limited data on immature 18 year olds.

yup, we really nailed it with this batch:

If it makes you feel any better Jarrad Grant went one pick after Morton and Robbie Tarrant one pick after Grimes.

Some big busts in that first round.

maybe, but it is still probably the key to their ongoing success and they have probably exploited it better than other "port douglas" clubs

Sydney - Franklin and Tippet, Kennedy, McGlynn ( and good value out of Mumford)

Port have taken in ordinary footballers in White and Schulz and have turned them around. Ebert has been good as has Monfries and you can now add Polec and Ryder to the list...

But Freo hasn't had the same success

well i never said other port douglas clubs didn't try to use the same tactics, just that hawthorn probably did it better, successfully and more frequently over a period of time

they have an impressive list of high imports over the same time we have languished

if the afl is looking at equalisation factors this could be one to consider

strangely this doesn't seem to be the same problem in nrl where mt druitt clubs seems to attract top liners easier

just saying

Every time I look at that picture I want to find Schwab and Prendergast and shoot them.

Surprised no one has corrected you yet...

That draft class belongs to CAC, not BP.

I was so happy for Toumpas today and hope he can take some confidence from his game, he didn't drop his head today after his mistake and kicked a couple.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

A few new faces joined our veteran Demonland Trackwatchers on a beautiful morning out at Gosch's Paddock for another Preseason Training Session. BLWNBA'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I arrived at around 1015 and the squad was already out on the track. The rehab group consisted of XL, McAdam, Melksham, Spargo and Sestan. Lever was also on restricted duties and appeared to be in runners.  The main group was doing end-to-end transition work in a simulated match situation. Ball mov

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. Windsor's run won't be lost playing off half back. In 19 games in 2024 he kicked 8 goals as a winger. I see him getting shots at g

Demonland's own Whispering Jack was not in attendance but he kicked off proceedings with the following summary of all the Preseason Training action to date. We’re already a month into the MFC preseason (if you started counting when the younger players in the group began the campaign along with some of the more keen older heads)

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
