Worsfold has ruled himself out of returning to coaching apparently, so the pool is getting shallower.

They should appoint Mark Neeld immediately. He was great at Collingwood. Carlton have a strong history of getting ex Pies.

Yes, the Malthouse endorsed protégés, Neeld, McKenna and Watters have all been great successes. Wouldn't think we'll see Malthouse on a coaches selection panel any time soon.

I really can't see them making such a blunder. Unless they end up with a Mr G Lyon on their selection committee! ^_^

Have not been a big fan of Mick along the journey, but genuinely feel for him. Carlton have handled this as badly as possible. There surely are less messy ways to part with a coach than this.

Carlton's problems run far deeper than one man, and I'd suggest their struggles have really only just begun. Their list needs a lot of work, and it'll be years before it's fixed.

On a lighter note, here's another gem from Titus.

http://titusoreily.com/every-single-person-at-carlton-sacked/

I loved this line

AFL CEO Gillon McLachlan said while the move was drastic it wouldn’t make the club any worse.

“It’s probably well overdue. I knew Carlton were in real trouble when Melbourne requested a priority pick on their behalf.”

perception and reality.

I really disliked Williams as a coach - irritated the life out of me.

Meet him outside a 7/11 last year having a takeaway coffee - I just said G'day and he apparently was is in the mood to talk - I talked with him for about half an hour - he was engaging and personable.

Did anyone else think it was odd that Judd fronted the media on behalf of the players and not the captain?

Would have made some sense to have Judd and Murphy to do it together and share the dialogue.

To only have Judd makes Murphy's leadership quite difficult. Diminishes his standing IMO.

Murphy seems a really nice bloke and has shown patches of good form but he hasn't shown much leadership

Would expect Murphy to be eased out of the captaincy next year.

Sad for him but probably the best for the team and the club.

This is Grimes and Trengove all over again.

He should not have been given the job in the first place.

The guy has no charisma he might be a good player but at this point just does not come over as a leader to me.

Carlton need to change their constitution to prevent anyone called Mathieson or Pratt and anyone related to them by blood or marriage being ineligible for election. The perception of the average Carlton fan is that the Pratts and Mathiesons effectively control the club. It is possible that any moneys they donate to the club are more than matched by the hit to revenues from supporters not engaging with the club through memberships, match attendances, merchandise and functions because they feel alienated by their club effectively being in the control of 2 billionaire families.

The Australia Post and PWC CEOs must wonder why they joined such a dysfunctional board. They should sack the rest and start again with these 2.

Still the appointment of Silvagni is a positive. He has seen life outside the poisonous Carlton culture and should have an imprimature to build for the long term. But we know how long a rebuild can take when you've hit rock bottom and have a mediocre list. When you look at their list there is not much beyond Cripps, Docherty, Yarran, Menzel, Bell and maybe Jacksh to build on. Silvagni is already limited in his trade options if Murphy and Gibbs can't be traded. Leaves Henderson really is their only way to unlock a first rounder which he could do as a Centre Half Back. Yarran could also be traded given he is a free agent end of 2016 but he'd have to agree and a suitor would have to really want him a year early to pony up a first rounder.

I have always felt that many of their supporters are real prats too.

1. an incompetent or ineffectual person: often used as a term of abuse

Malthouse did not fail Carlton, Carlton failed malthouse, i think mickey wanted to get back into coaching and prove Eddie wrong so bad, that he did not study the blues list closer enough, he believed what Carlton were telling him, that their list was close to a flag, in reality they were about to fall of the cliff.

It is a bit surprising that he didn't do a better job of list analysis. Always thought that he was smarter than that. Edited by monoccular

Yep, I texted SEN at the time (tongue in cheek) to ask if they'd swept the decks and Judd was reappointed as Captain.

Very odd.

Sometimes in organizations one finds that someone coming on board with superlative recommendations turns out to be quite the opposite. It is as if the first organization just can't wait to offload them, hence the glowing references. Have seen it a few times.

Probably more a matter of Judd being the media's darling.

Interesting comment in today's HUN

It says Mick Did a paid interview with SEN yesterday morning.

I wonder how many of the interviews we hear on radio and TV are paid for by the program?

Posted

I had some sympathy for Mick, up until his interview yesterday morning. Whether he felt aggrieved by his former employer or not, it was a total lack business courtesy to try and bring others down with him. None of us know the facts, but given the accusation he made against Trigg, defamation may not be out of the question and his expected payout may be affected.

Posted

Why can't Mick set the record straight on Eddie Betts leaving?

Blues fans and admin will blame Mick for their misfortunes and he isn't prepared to be used in that way. Given his own CEO told him it was otherwise (i.e. that the Betts deal was sewn up a while back).

There's two ways of looking at that DC... perhaps he saw it as 'white anting" the opposition.

A RFA can't commit to leaving until his club refuses to match an offer. So to say he was sewn up 18 months ago seems untrue.

I recall at the time Betts saying he wanted to stay but that Carlton wouldn't match the offer. Daisy money probably caused that.

It was the same situation with Waite.

One could surmise MM wanted to cause Trigg more trouble on his way out.

It is certainly open to him to attempt to "set the record straight" - if what he says is true. The AFL have already said that they will investigate the accusation. Given Trigg's already tarnished record, he stands to lose the most if it is true. He has come out publicly, as has Betts' Manager and said that Mick has misconstrued the conversation and there have been vehement denials of Mick's claim. If Mick is wrong in his allegation, then he has, in my view, severely damaged his own reputation. His VFL/AFL legacy should be one that is held in esteem, but if his motivation to make such an allegation was simply out of self interest and the allegation proves to be false, then his legacy, in my opinion, will be greatly diminished.

Is there a credible leader left at the club?

I'm honestly asking, I can't see one.

Ah ha...

As per the natural cycle of Carlton Football Club 21st century.

First, take a veteran, legendary coach at the exact moment they are official over the hill. Dump them in appalling circumstances and blame them for the total failure of every element of the club.

Then, grab a former champion and favourite son in an effort to reunite the club. Make sure it is too early in their coaching career for them to be ready, drag them through the mud for a few years before unscrupulously dumping them because they couldn't keep up with the arrogance of the marketing department.

Repeat.

So, SOS is a real possibility. Or Matthew Lappin? Fev?

After that, in another four years it'll be Ross Lyon, who will decide that after finally cracking through for a premiership at Freo, he might retire from football for a while, only to be lured out by a massive contract offer from the Blues who are beginning to look like they might have something after a several years of top draft picks. Then he'll discover all too late that actually, the board and executive just want to use him as a proxy 'face' while they get to keep making all the decisions.

Could it happen a third time?

Carlton football club; where young careers stall and veteran reputations go to die.

Mick is no fool, read what he said.

"Steven Trigg assured us when he arrived here 'Don't take it too personally, we – being Adelaide – had him stitched up 18 months out’," Malthouse told SEN.

What does stitched up mean? Mick said exactly enough to get the desired outcome. It could mean verbally Eddie said he was interested. Which is probably what happened.

PS: I do not trust Trigg. He has been caught cheating before. You know what they say, leopards, spots.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
