I think he is a bloody good player but does not bring much to our midfield that we don't already have. I would prefer Suckling and/or Sloane for team balance.

Rance is coming up as a FA as well. Put off talks with Tiges.

If we get 8-10 wins this year, some of these mid career FAs might be more tempted to join us, knowing that they will be part of the resurgence. Not to mention probably get paid very well.

Totally agree with the comment above. I would be searching for a point of difference in regards to head hunting a player. Being in WA I see a bit of him, his F&B year was played as predominantly a run with tagger, no doubt he can find his own ball but he is not the quickest midfielder nor has he the most penetrating of kicks and does not have the skills to be a dangerous forward option - 3 things I would looking to find for our squad. -

We made a big play the year we got tyson but wce would not let him go

Only 24 years old, with the likes of Cross coming into retirement I think with Selwoods experience and leadership he could slot right in.

I think this year is a very important year that we really go hard at Free Agents. The only star player we had who was eligible for Free Agency was Nathan Jones, but now that contract is all tied up there is no risk in deflating any potential compensation pick.

Good player who would be a great addition.

But gees... a 24-25 year old free agent doesn't seem right to me.

Posted

It does seem young at 24-25, I agree.

I definitely rate him and he'd be an upgrade on Matt Jones or McKenzie. Hard runner, hard player with better skills than those two and can find the sticks.

The more quality we add to our list the better we become and he wouldn't cost the world.

As someone said, Cross will be gone possibly next year and given we've lost Blease, Gysberts, Tapscott, Strauss etc who were all in the same age bracket as Selwood, we need to be targetting a proven midfielder to fit in and continue to make it easier for players like Brayshaw and Petracca to develop properly.

Interested in the Sloane comment. I see them as similar players really. Both head over the pill, predominately inside players who have learned to spread and be damaging on the outside as well.

S. Selwood would come cheaper and be more attainable than Sloane (who we overlooked for Bennell). And frankly, he's an upgrade on everyone except N Jones and Tyson (maybe Vince too). If Viney develops into a player as effective as S Selwood I'd be happy.

Scott Selwood is criminally underrated in this thread. Statistically he has been very similar to Nathan Jones over the last three years, albeit 2014 was injury interrupted. As a FA from Victoria, of course he should be a prime target.

Jones
2012 – 21 games, 24.6 average disposals per game, 97.5 SC points.
2013 – 22 games, 23.1 disposals, 90.0 SC points
2014 – 22 games, 27.7 disposals, 108.1 SC points

S Selwood
2012 – 22 games, 24.9 average disposals per game, 104.0 SC points.
2013 – 18 games, 25.6 disposals, 103.8 SC points
2014 – 12 games, 20.9 disposals, 80.3 SC points

is a gun, but he'll go to geelong.

I don't think so. He came off a poor year last year due to injury. I think this is a case of seriously just wanting to put in good performances to up his contract with WC.

Posted

So glad we picked up Addam Maric one pick before Selwood went to West Coast...

I remember that draft and when we went past Selwood I thought gee if I was a recruiter I would play safe and take a Selwood. The recruiters must be super confident and this Maric kid must be good.

As it often happens it pays to play the percentages. In Selwood we would have got a real soldier. In Maric we got an immature kid who wasn't ready for AFL. An interview or two may have picked that weakness up.

WC has used him as a tagger in the past. He's played that tagger that can rack up possies role like Carrazzo. Not to say if let off the leash he couldn't be a great mid in his own right. What's his frees for count like? Like the other Selwood I would imagine.

Posted (edited)

I'd take him for anything equating pick 10 or after.... His biggest year he was a top 5 midfielder. Last year his numbers dropped off dramatically, but from what I understand that was largely due to Simpson's game plan and role for him. Crossy won't be around much longer, and he would be an upgrade. I would think Dees would be throwing everything at him. And I've said "pick 10 or later" before, and they've dangled picks 1-3... So I would expect they would offer that.

If he's a free agent we won't be offering any picks, just the right deal if we are interested.

We have approx. 5 midfielders right now.

His 'point of difference' would be his existence.

We still need all the Midfielders we can get who are hard at it.

Those who say S Selwood would not improve the engine are just being ridiculous...

Get the best players possible who want to come. This is not a choice between Sloan & Selwood or anyone else, until of course both say they want to come & we can only afford one. This is a thread about Selwood & he'd be a massive upgrade on plenty of blokes on our list. Clearly the club would be targeting several they feel they have a chance of landing & all those mentioned would surely be discussed by the club until otherwise ruled out.

I'd take any really good FA we can land at the end of this year, it costs us nothing but the space we already have sitting there doing nothing & would really lift our stocks with the promising young list we have at the moment to land a 26 year old like Selwood in his prime. All for it if we can get him. Of course there are players I'd prefer instead out there but this one we have a history of offering contracts to & deals for, and there may well be good reasons for that beyond just he'd be an great upgrade to the list (i.e. mutual interest?).

Btw, Sloan should already be at MFC, don't even get me started (again)! I'd love him too, but from the outside looking in he seems less likely to relocate. Would love to be wrong & we should definitely chasing there also, but not instead of.

It's nice to be looking toward next off season & not talking about the potential high draft picks as much as the potential FA signings no? Go win some bloody games boys, make it happen!!

Selwood would be one of any number of midfielders that Team Roos would want next year, some FAs and some not. For the first time in about 10 years I have faith in our recruiters and FD to work good things for the club.

This club can't be sold as a destination for reasonable dollars in FA if there's strong interest elsewhere (he also doesn't appear to be unhappy with WCE nor them with him).

It'd take generous overs for him to even consider it and I think that money can be better spent elsewhere. And with all the focus that's been put into the midfield recently (along with the McCartney factor), there's a fair chance he will be surplus after a couple of years anyway.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
