Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Because he spends 80-85% of his time doing something other than rucking?

I like your thinking...

I would prefer to have a battler for those 15-20 minutes in the ruck if he is more than useful elsewhere than another lumberer to go along with a primary lumberer.

Unless Gawn can clunk 7-10 marks a game as a forward and kick 2-3 goals on regular occasions, I don't think he should be backing up Jamar.

He should be gunning for his job really...

Agree, we need a forward who can ruck.

I was thinking that with Gawn in the side playing deep forward the opposition would need to put the best defender on him (due to his height). Hogan will run whoever he gets off his feet and dawes will get the 2nd defender. I know what you are saying about slow, Gawn doesn't have the best follow up, but as mentioned on other threads our ball movement didn't allow us to take advantage of his height or ability to make a contest 1v1 at least.. with garlett and co around our forwards feet + better midfield movement of the ball i would be less worried about this.

Also sweet dee i like what you are thinking, but Gawn would be unlikely to be played in the ruck if spencer is available too. whenever he goes VFL he seems to spend most of the time forward, if spencer gets injured i could see that happening though..

Not unless he can take the 7-10 marks 'rpfc' is talking about otherwise they will put an attacking defender on him who can run off.

Gawn needs to step up as the number one ruck option, he has to beat Jamar and Spencer to get it if he can't he has no future. He's not a forward, he's a ruckman who can go forward occasionally.

Unless we get another ruck who can play forward as well as if not better than Gawn.

Then you can use them in a partnership. But Spencer certainly is only right for a 1 ruck team and the same with Jamar.

I wish we could skip ahead a few years to see what Max King becomes. He's got the rare traits skill wise for a big guy to play both positions, but I have no idea about whether he can be effective as a forward or a ruck! Unless he somehow comes in quickly I think Pedersen maintains the edge for that forward/ruck relief role with competition from Fitzpatrick, who might be a little more dangerous forward but needs to show he can compete in the ruck as well as not make coach killer errors forward.

For the most part, Roos settled on Pedersen as our 2nd ruck in 2014. As a general rule, I'd expect that scenario to happen again unless Gawn can improve his marking ability in a significant way (Spencer for the same reason)

The story is nearly always the same when ruckmen (who are predominantly ruckmen) are competing for the one spot (especially in today's footy) ... supporters try and find a way to get 2 of them in the one side.

As a general rule playing 2 ruckman who don't have 2 strings to their bow probably won't happen because it can effectively leave a team one player short and that it turn can effect rotations.

No we can't really, and as you say Pedersen or Fitz are the current options.

Just read 'Macca's' post above and he is on the money.

I think hogan will play chf not fullfwd

We've got so many new players and so many up-and-comers that it's a difficult assignment coming up with a best 22.

Unlike other, more recent seasons the coaches & FD know so much more than we do this time around ... what is almost certainly true is that a number of those players who played regularly last season won't be doing so next season.

In order to bring in Hogan, Lumumba, Frost, Garlett et al, a number of others will need to make room. Then there's all the 18-20 year old's and how Roos will use them and for how many games.

There are just too many variables but that's a good thing in my opinion ... in an ideal world there would be at least 6 players in any given week who are not picked who can count themselves unlucky.

However, we still need at least 6-8 players to step it up to 'very good or better' in order for the team to start winning games on a consistent basis ... at this early stage, it does look as though we have far greater depth.

Starting 22 for round 1 2015 is 2014's round 23 team minus Frawley, Barry, Dawes, and anyone who picks up an injury and is unfit to start round 1, plus Hogan, Garlett, Lamumba (subject to availability/form) and anyone who is picked to replace possible injured player, or anyone who shows greater form than those who were picked rd 23 2014.

Any other team thrown up is a useless hypothetical.

Thanks.

And dined out on that one performance for the rest of the year. I reckon he is over rated but that is just my opinion. I would like to see him play a few complete games to get a better idea of him Same with Salem who kicked a winning goal after the siren and instantly became a star. He had some pretty ordinary games along the way but kept his spot. I do think he will become a good footballer but at the moment is being rated well above his general performance.

Go and watch his performance against the Crows, he's not over-rated, he'll be more than solid, just needs more development

Quite frankly, it's awfully conceived. There is no run or foot skills in the back half and there is no second ruck option

Insert GAWN/FITZY for round 1.

Class and run off half back. Dunn can play third tall if needed, I think he's quite versatile. Was impressed with Frosts highlights, he will only get better.

Cross must play, his work around stoppages is invaluable.

Multiple options up forward. JKH to be given a chance in a functioning forward line.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
