Currently doing a number on Peter Wright in the TAC finals. Probably most exciting thing is that he can kick! Last couple of matches he has really increased his draft standing. We would need to get another early third round pick to get him.

Pick 57: Melbourne Oscar McDonald

Position: Key defender/forward

Height: 196 cm, Weight: 88 kg, DOB: 18/03/1996

Club: North Ballarat

Projected draft range 50-rookie

Player comparison: Jackson Trengove

Oscar McDonald is one of the better key defenders I am really bullish about in terms of advancing to the next level. He is tall and athletic, and also picks off numerous forward 50 entries with his tremendous ability to take intercept marks and rebound strongly. Best described as a general in defence, McDonald the younger brother of Melbournes Tom is extremely versatile as a defender, and, unlike most key defenders, he loves to back himself and use the ball by foot. He hits the ball flat and hard, and has a really nice turn of foot, being deceptively quick over his first few steps. The Rebels have also used him as a key forward, and hes shown he can be just as damaging at both ends. He has a fantastic leap, strong hands, a really good work rate and rarely ever goes to ground.

The North Ballarat Rebels gained a top four spot with a narrow two-point win over the Oakleigh Chargers. In a low scoring affair, the Rebels were incredibly accurate having just 10 scoring shots to a mammoth 23 but getting the job done. On the other hand, Oakleigh were terrible in front of goal and will need to address that ahead of their Qualifying Final against Geelong. Oscar McDonald was again the best and pushed his finals credentials while Hugh Beasley was a shining light off half back and Toby McLean exciting up forward. North Ballarat now face Calder in the Qualifying Final while Oakleigh meet Geelong.

BFGN Rising Stars Medal:

5 Oscar McDonald (North Ballarat Rebels)

4 Michael Johnston (North Ballarat Rebels)

3 Hugh Beasley (Oakleigh Chargers)

2 Kade Answerth (Oakleigh Chargers)

1 Toby McLean (Oakleigh Chargers)

The gun: Oscar McDonald

The younger brother of Melbournes Tom, Oscar McDonalds season has seen himself launched into the limelight as a Jackson Trengove-like defender who boasts terrific athleticism, agility, speed, a lovely kick and the ability to threaten when pinch hitting up forward. McDonald has been North Ballarats gun player this year, and arguably their most important. Playing key roles at both ends of the field, he has been a large reason why the Rebels have shot into flag contention in 2014. With a terrific ability to read the play, mixed with a combination of being able to attract and use the ball in possession, his willingness to kick goals at one end and stop them at the other will go a long way to ensuring the Rebels go deep into September.

I like the look of going [Early Picks cluster] + Stretch + McDonald

There may be a question on whether McDonald is available by our fourth round pick.

Possible argument for the addition of an extra third rounder as part of a deal moving off pick 2 e.g Pick 2 for Luke Parker and pick 40. Schwing!

Might be the bext btother combination for us since the Febeys?

(Certainly won't replicate the Cockatto-Collins duo, although their cousin shows promise.)

What about the McDonalds of a few years ago? Anthony and James?

We are talking about the second generation of MacDonakds [this time spelt McDonald], rebirthed as KPDs instead of midfielders.

Hang on, what are you guys talking about? We've got Nate and Matt Jones.

Good pick up Moonie. Dont forget some other brothers over the years

Steve and Shaun Smith

Brett and Glenn Lovett and, of course

Kevin Dyson whose younger brother Tom is currently wearing the number 12 for us

I don't know why the Dogs didn't just get Tom Boyd under father son, his dad Mathew already plays there....

Isn't this "The Oscar McDonald Thread"?

Sounds a decent prospect and I'm hoping we are able to pick him up with a late pick and let him develop for a few years.

Not exactly a high priority considering our recruitment of Frost...would be happy to rookie him if he slipped through the ND

Posted

If we did draft him, we'd definitely be stocked in the tall athletic backmen area.

Frost, T. McDonald, O. McDonald

Which would be a good thing given the departure of Frawley (especially with their youth)!

    TRAINING: Monday 16th December 2024

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

WAYNE WUSSELL'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Rehab: Lever, Spargo, McAdam, Lindsay, Brown Sinnema is excellent by foot and has a decent vertical leap. Windsor is training with the Defenders. BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
