longmire did the hard yards first....learnt the job and only then was annointed the successor.

Remind me again what Lings done besides bits of commentary and a few adds.

There are better experienced options by far.

Agree with this, but if they go with Ling they must be convinced and of course there has to be the let out before the handover (no matter who the anointed one is) if it doesn't work.

Longmire certainly did the hard yards and did a good apprenticeship. Voss & Hird show the pitfalls if you don't.

Could Ling join the long line of Heally, Brereton & Lyon to name a few that are happy to throw dirt from the commentary box but never put their name on the line and take on coaching?

I read this thread and the other related one with interest. So many wise heads contributing and still I'm none the wiser (lol)!

My two bobs worth is that I'm very, very confident that Roos will make the right call. He has a proven record as an astute judge of football people, and he won''t accept a successor who will permit the foundation he is building to crumble.

Who says the long apprenticeship is needed or is even greatly beneficial?

I'd say that if you can coach, you can coach.

Roos himself didn't need a long apprenticeship.

I'm not convinced.

It seems like you're looking for excuses as to why it shouldn't be Ling.

I don't think 2 years as an assistant, and then Roos staying on as a guiding force, is insufficient for any candidate.

Non the wiser either and have faith Roos will make the right call. I can see both sides of the argument and wouldn't be disappointed with Ling or Kirk if it was down to those 2. I wouldn't right off Dew yet either.

The only thing I have confidence in is the coaching set up and the administration. The list is another story.

However with those foundations in place good decisions for the future will be made. in the meantime it really burns watching Petterd, Stefen Martin, Wines, McCrae, Bompa, Sloane, Rockcliff etc all on fire while our plodders run around in a dysfunctional Casey setup.

point is...id think there some very good assistants ready to step up... yeah yeah I know MN etc

but if PJ and PR choose wisely then theres a mentorship to bring the coach -elect up to speed

There could be a possibility that Roos wants someone with no previous runs on the board as an assistant. The successor without any pre-conceived ideas about how coaching this group as compared to another club (Neeld) may be a well considered strategy.

While I am not referring to Machsy, your statement is not entirely correct RTG. Archeologists and anthropologists study coprolites. Coprolites are fossilised turds. I believe these could be polished but I will defer on this point if someone better advised on the subject can correct me.

These media guys need the oxygen provided by rumours and talk to help keep them relevant in their media careers. I was always amazed how often Lyon was thrown up by fans to coach even a decade or more after he stopped playing with no coaching experience in between. Made no rational sense. If he went into real estate instead, the matter would have never have arisen. Edited by america de cali

Agree, it's pretty funny how people jump on board. I love how Wayne Britton dumped on Lyon recently when talking about how it's ok for media people to get stuck into the coaches but they never had the courage to put themselves on the line and do it themselves. Brits wasn't going to name names but they pushed him and being the honest man he is he said G Lyon was the worst offender in his time.

''They'll have to be someone the club trusts will continue that direction, that the players trust will continue that direction,'' he said. ''You wouldn't want me to do what I'm doing for two or three years and then someone to come in and completely change the game plan.''

Thompson later endorsed former Geelong captain Cameron Ling for the post, saying he was an "on-field coach" with the Cats.

"He used to drive the standards at Geelong," Thompson said.

Who knows if he could make a coach or not?

IMO he would need a decent length apprenticeship and if he looked up to it then sure.

I don't think that MFC can afford to try out an untested senior coach again.

Ling must be fairly intimidated stepping into the void left by Brian Royal.

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full

    MEANWHILE by Whispering Jack

… meanwhile, at about the same time that Narrm was putting its feet on the accelerator to obliterate the long-suffering Euro-Yroke combination, I heard someone mention in passing that Kuwarna was leading Waalitj Marawar by a whopping 46 to 1 halfway through the second quarter of their game over in Adelaide. “What is football coming to?” I asked myself.  In front of my eyes, the Demons were smashing it through the midfield, forcing turnovers and getting the footy to their forwards who w

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th
