I'm not repeating what is contained in the first few pages of this thread.

Just for you and your non-factual ways...

DB: "MELBOURNE young gun Jesse Hogan has suffered a back injury that is likely to keep him out of the opening rounds of the AFL season."

MFC: "Melbourne forward Jesse Hogan injured his lower back during Melbourne’s NAB Cup game against Geelong in Alice Springs last Friday." ..."he could potentially still play in 2 to 3 weeks or it could be longer".

Not really that big a deal really is it? Hate Barrett as much as you like but at least shoot him down for simply being a [censored] rather than trying to change the facts to suit your hatred.

lol, no... its called pulling your head in and being realistic - instead of expecting this 18 year old kid to play 24 games and take out the coleman.

you will see him around round 3-4.

it will be fine.

Nothing you've said changes my original point in the slightest.

It's just a broken back!

What are we worrying about???!!!

By the way, am I paranoid, or do Demon recruits always seem to get serious injuries .?

I'm not talking about just this season, but way back to Dean, Prympke , Charles and Jakovich.

Carlton, Coll and Essendon seem to get 300 games out of their stars. Not us!(only Neita)

Perhaps I think we're unlucky because I only know the injuries at Melbourne.

Do any other Demonlanders agree we've been stiff with injuries over recent decades?

Stuie the reason people get annoyed with you is when you are pulled on you try and back pedal.

Around 1.35 in Barrett clearly says we have received information that Jesse Hogan has a slight stress fracture to the back

yes it does.

it means chill out, the injury doesn't appear to be bad.

the kid is a kid, yes he's big and strong, but he's not a seasoned adult.

Originally i didn't think he would play round one anyway.

So yes we are annoyed he got injured, he will just make his debut later.

agree.... The Ox was on the brink of being a champion of the game, then he did his knees.... Who knows how far we would have gone, with ten years of pre knee Ox... Even after the knee problems, he got us into the 2000 Grand final...

To all these things there is a silver lining. You don't want a 19 year old kid who is potentially your next marquee player to be languishing with back problems but I have to say that when I saw him running around against Geelong a week ago with knee heavily strapped, I wondered whether the fact that Clark and Dawes were out might not have created some extra pressure to play him when otherwise he might have needed a little more time. With two weeks to go before the start of the season, it won't be the end of the world if his body gets some extra rest and, with the right treatment, misses the first two games of the season, then comes back fully fit - especially if the other talls are slowly returning one by one within a similar time frame.

It is odd that we'd be so concerned about a new player missing the start of the season. Unfortunately what is driving the fuss about Hogan missing round 1 (plus the rest of our tall forward line) is the annual expectation and pressure to win the first match and the fear of the effect if we don't. If a loss happens, we just have to hope that the new regime can deal with it in a way that doesn't destroy confidence for the rest of the year.

Thought the same thing about Chris Judd when I saw him running around in a practice match at Optus Oval in 2002.

These things are never 2-3 weeks. Remember Jesse pulled up sore one training session with the knee, said he'd be back in full training within a week, and he was out all of January.

True but during the off season there's not much lost by waiting an extra week or two with players in rehab - things are different once you're in season.

I know we've gone through a long patch where we've been hurt by injuries but is there any statistical date to back this up?

Difficult to get the stats compared to other clubs because to be truly meaningful you would only want to count injuries to significant players and it is hard to define who they are and even harder to decide who is one. So you'd want the stats produced by a person who supports no team yet knows enough about footy to decide. Since such a creature doesn't exist you'd want a supporter of every club to do the stats of all the other clubs and then merge the result.

Should be a PhD in there somewhere.

If you can get away with just duck feathers you'll have done well!!

I still think we have the ability to kick a score against sides while we miss the 3 big talls - it won't be an easy thing to do, but Fitzy, Pedersen and Howe are decent targets to kick the footy at, and if we can have JKH roaming around at their feet then I think we'll be alright.

As others have mentioned our opening 5 games aren't too bad and it still gives us the opportunity to put some wins on the board and build some confidence. Hogan and Dawes have time to mend from their injuries and come back ready to go without being rushed. It hurts not to have the big fella down there but we can survive.

Posted

I don't think the loss of the big forwards is that big an issue, if we get the ball in the hands on Vince, Toumpas and Watts i'll back them to find a target up forward, and Howe, Pederson, Fitzy, Kennedy-harris and co aren't terrible

Tend to agree, at this stage Roos is still developing the team ethos and game plan and there is no realistic prospect that we were destined for instant success with all hands on deck. Give these injured guys all the time they need to recover. When they get back hopefully they will be the final piece in the puzzle to complete a well structured team. Edited by america de cali

Well, in Hogan's case, it's not really a serious injury. Thankfully, it appears that the medical staff at the MFC decided to get scans done for a persistent pain and they have caught it before it could become a serious injury (that is, progress to the next stage, a stress fracture). But yes, we do seem to be able to pick them... injuries, or in the case of Fitz, ailments.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
