Aaron Davey joins Toiges

Aaron should have been left as the small forward

He'd be a legend of the game had that occurred

I guess he was going so well, and without a strong midfield, coaches wanted his kicking skills across half back, ready for the handball. Thing is, it was too easy for the opposition to shut down.

Back at his peak under Daniher, he was dynamite running down opposition backmen though.

I agree. Some players just don't seem to be able to become midfielders. Take Colin Sylvia for instance. He will tear it up next year as a dedicated half forward. No midfield for him.

Which raises an interesting point about some of the players selected top 10 in this years draft. Eg Billings a half forward, Scharenberg a half back. Both their clubs say they are going to turn them into midfielders. It doesn't necessarily work that way as we've seen.

e.g Grimes and Trengove as midfielders the last two years.

Pfft what a load of crud. He was a one trick pony as a small forward as a chase and run down guy. And defenders started to work that out and small forwards had to all pressure and tackler more than chase and run down. Aaron wasn't an amazing crumber or a good mark so he was hardly an elite small forward.

His best attributes was his burst speed and dynamite kicking and his best season came as a midfielder.

The unfortunate thing was a few hamstring issues, a dodgy knee and an overall poor endurance base meant he could never sustain top class AFL fitness needed to be a pure outside link up player and a lack of hardness also limited his career.

No one would play for you.

Micky O is a legend.

You stand by what you wrote?

Agreed

What sort of fool writes this bigoted, ignorant rubbish? Honestly, this is pure unsubstantiated stupidity. I feel like vomiting because you barrack for the same team I do.

Agreed

Micky O is a legend...oh please.

Ever heard of innocent people paying their victims...

Standing on shifted ground. But do you still stand by your generalisation about Aboriginal players' dedication? Or did that get a bit hot for you?

Actually, it is my understanding that indigenous players are well OVER represented on afl playing lists compared to in overall Aust population. Takes a fair bit of dedication and effort to get on an afl list, I would have thought. I (and I reckon many on here) would love to have the dedication and skill to make it that far.

Let me ask you a question - do you still stand by this statement...

"Micky O is a legend."

I never made it. You're getting a little punchy.

I certainly implied that he was a dedicated footballer. I also implied that you had made a racist statement. That was about the time you threw up rape as a smokescreen.

Dragging in the issue of rape to cover your tail is unimpressive.

Getting back to Aaron Davey, it is a shame that it was Richmond that not only saw fit to make him an indigineous ambassador/mentor for their AFL Club but now it appearss that he is going to be playing for their VFL team (against Casey). After all his years of good service at Melbourne, it is an indictment that MFC and Casey could not have identified similar roles for Aaron within their structures as it it is not as though Aaron would not have fitted into Casey's best 22 even when most of the Demons team list are fit.

Maybe CBD, or perhaps Aaron wanted a change of scene. Probably give him a more rounded perspective on clubs and coaching. Would be nice if he came back into the MFC fold some day.

A fair assessment of Davey. I would also add that he could not handle a hard tag and had too many on field meltdown episodes to be elite.

But good luck Aaron at Richmond. It's a credit to you to come off the rookie list and achieve what you did in AFL.

Here we go with the BS revisionism again -oh yeah what a a friggin hero, takes a six year contract , doesn't get a kick for the last five, allegedly the 'father' of the group of indigenous players at the club - wonaeaemirri, jurrah, bennell, jetta great work there aaron, we really got a massive return from that group. Jurrah was without a doubt the best natural footballer i have ever seen. What role did you have in preventing him from [censored] his entire life up? Weren't you supposed to be the main guy behind that? WTF were you when he boarded a plane home to take a machete to a family member? There is nobody more responsible for that than you, oh yeah they said, he comes from a challenging background, but he has Davey at the club to help him through... and he obviously had no impact whatsoever on Jurrah or any of the other indigenous boys. Not to mention he went from being our best player to a fringe player in a wooden spoon side the moment the ink was dry. Great player for his first 4-5 years but after that just another leaking wound of our damaged club. Davey - another melbourne footy club hero, another Miller, another Bruce, another Jamar, another pretender racking up games and doing nothing with them. These guys are the reason we have been a laughing stock of a club for a decade. This is what we had to offer when draftees came to the club - their opponents had Voss, Buckley, Riccutio, Carey, Hird etc we had excuses like this. Please God can Roosy bring the era of some blokes of real character, blokes that want to win games of football, instead of worrying about getting hurt, not blokes that will drop their heads when tagged and never touch the footy again. FCS Davey, he got a bunch of kicks and had some influence off half-back fo0r what? half a season? then they all locked him down and it was like having a friggin ghost out there! If ever there was a personification of the MFC [censored] stereotype it was Aaron Davey. Good riddance.

The problem is, Curry and Beer, your overkill ruins any valid point you may make.

I'll bite...

What a weak ignorant comment 'one trick pony' i saw the guys he ran down, massive size differential, hugely brave. I'll take that one trick pony any day of the week. He was smaller than Flower and when his hamstrings went so did his best weapon. You do acknowledge the hamstrings but your comment on hardness is just wrong and i reckon quite rude. And has been said before he changed the way the game is played and got more attention than just about anyone else in our shizen side from the opposition.

Wow, ever tried breathing through your nose? Your really have no clue and i have been sucked in by a troll, really wish i hadn't had a beer so i could just ignore this crud. In other teams they would have laid some shepherds for a player like Davey, when Black was a skinny kid he had plenty of protection. He got market price for his skills in a team that couldn't use them and i'm very glad he played for Melbourne because he still made me feel proud of the club. Anyone of his size with the heart to go the field is brave, if you want to rail against something whinge about the fact that his hamstrings didn't last. Even Buckley who was a tank couldn't get past dodgy hamstrings.

LIKE! Davey had a lot of heart and skill and always seemed to lft the team somewhat this year when brought in as a sub (after it was too late). He never shirked the contest, was one of our best tacklers and managed goals that nobody else was capable of.

Ex-Demons/Scorpions who have recently moved to other VFL clubs:

Collingwood: Tom Couch

Frankston: Wade Lees Josh Tynan

Port Melbourne: James Magner Luke Tynan

Richmond: Aaron Davey Rian McGough James Wall Ben Waite

Hey KC, how are VFL lists put together? For ex-MFC listed players who retire or are delisted (ie, J Tynan, Couch, Magner and Davey from the above list) does that also automatically remove them from Casey's list too? How do they get on other teams' lists?

    REDLEG PRIDE by Meggs

Hump day mid-week footy at the Redlegs home ground is a great opportunity to build on our recent improved competitiveness playing in the red and blue.   The jumper has a few other colours this week with the rainbow Pride flag flying this round to celebrate people from all walks of life coming together, being accepted. AFLW has been a benchmark when it comes to inclusivity and a safe workplace.  The team will run out in a specially designed guernsey for this game and also the following week

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm
