Gysberts Delisted

In case anybody is interested Jordan Gysberts was delisted today from North Melbourne. I don't think this will come as a surprise to anybody. I think it further highlights the disgrace of our recruiting over the years.

Gysberts arrived at Aegis Park at the conclusion of 2012 and was an emergency on several occasions, but didn’t play a senior game. The midfielder had played 19 matches with Melbourne.

Wow he had 2 rising star nominations with us was a number 11 draft pick, starred against geelong and now delisted by north. Talk about a short career.

Maybe he had a porr attiude or just didnt work hard enough under Brad Scott. Im sure someone will pick him up. But there must be a reason why he couldnt get 1 game for north during the season.

In June, Kangaroos assistant coach Darren Crocker revealed on the club's website that the midfielder's physical development was akin to a newly drafted player.

"He's got to improve his fitness," Crocker said at the time.

"In a physical sense, his strength is like a guy who has come into our club and starting from scratch."

The rumours about his poor attitude to training appear to have significant merit. Three years into the system and being compared to 18yo draftees not yet exposed to an AFL environment is a serious indictment on his training habits.

I'm sorry bit I can't agree with anyone that saw 'something' in this bloke.

When he played that game against Geelong, none of their mids took even the faintest bit of notice of him, and so he accumulated possessions by pretty much being free at stoppages. They were simply useless possessions. Greenwood had 38 in one game this year but can't break into Norths engine room.. Why? Magner got over 50 in the VFL this year and didn't play the week after. Why?

Cale Morton was averaging high numbers in his first few years when many here were frothing at the thought of our very own Adam Goodes. Numbers. Nothing but numbers. Why do people place so much emphasise on this stat on its own. This is the AFL. The elite. You're not suddenly a good player if you manage high numbers. Just like it doesn't make you a good player if you can only tackle well. Or only kick well.

Gysberts was an out of the blue pick and one of the laziest players I have laid my eyes upon. He did nothing in the champs to prove his worth as a top 20 draft pick and BP will go down as one of the worst AFL recruiters the game has seen. I'm sorry to be harsh, but it's infuriating.

I've never seen anything to excite me when watching him play and that was the same with Morton.

due to our poor player development they must have thought they could do something with him.

but at the end if the day, if the kid doesn't want to work hard for it, he ain't ever gonna get it.

Pfft. He wasn't out of the blue. He was a round earlier than expected. And it was for the need of midfielders with height. Freo in the grand final with Mundy, Barlow and Fyfe showed the benefit of bigger bodies at the clearances. You don't need to tell anyone about BP failings as a recruiter but it was obvious he recruited for types more than for talent.

I agree he got his possessions without an opponent. But he still showed an ability to find the football and that shouldn't be disregarded.

The long and the short of Gysberts for mine is that physically he was unable to stand out at VFL level and therefore unable to even step it up to AFL level. Without being in the inner circle you can't judge if that's due to just poor physical capacity or work rate or both. However 2 clubs giving up suggest a work rate component.

Skill wise he wasn't great either so therefore he wasn't worth trying on a back or forward flank.

If I was another club with a shortage of midfield depth I'd still take on Gysberts for a look at some training sessions. West Coast, Hawthorn, Sydney even Geelong should get him down for a preseason and see if he finally makes the step from built like an 18 year old to an AFL body.

Jobe Watson, Mundy, Barlow, David Myers, Kennedy. Everyone says key forwards take time. In fairness the physical demands on inside midfield are probably even higher than that of key forward. Maybe it's time people realise to be 190cm and 90kg and run like a 175, 75kg guy and compete in strength battles takes years to develop as well

Yes, but it also comes down to the person themselves. Some expect it laid on a platter, others take the bull by the horns! The Gys was not one of the latter!
