Jones Jnr????

i thought that was given that we'd take him?

any info on him please?

Probably wouldn't be the one to ask but i'd say we'd want him but i'd think he go for round pick 30-40, really good half back.

Posted (edited)

it would be a miracle if Zac Jones lasted to 40. Will go around 25-30.

for tall backs... Cameron Giles (SA under 18s) or Daniel McStay (Eastern) are the most likely options.

I have also read that Tom Cutler (Oakleigh) may slip. He was rated top 25 at the start of 2013 but has not shown at national championships. He is a well built 190cms defender with very good run and skills. Perfect HBF in mould of Grant Birchall.

I couldn't find any chat about what we should be doing with our later picks. I was interested to hear peoples thoughts.

Can I hear peoples thoughts about these and others:

Ben Cavarra - Small isn't quite the word. Tiny, tough-as-nails. On-field General. Clearance king. I think as a small forward at the feet of Dawes, Hogan and Clark he'd blitz it. Defence blinks, guy doesn't miss, it's a goal.

Eli Templeton - Just smart mover, understands the game, quick and has a tank. He's only 67kg, if he can get a bit of pasta into him, it'd be great to see what he could do. If he can muscle up, he'd tear it apart.

Guy Dickson - Have never seen him, but Knightmare writes that he's a Jeremy Howe doppelgänger, in the playing sense. Best 2-3 on the ground every time amongst the likes of Viney, Hrovat, McCrae, Jaksch, Haynes, Ashby and Moore.

Any others?

Ben Cavarra- Watched him blitz it at Ferntree Gully Eagles for years. The kid is short however can seriously play. BOG for Eastern Ranges in this years GF. Reckon he is worth rolling the dice with late pick.

We need mids, this entire draft should be midfielders.

Strauss needs to become our play maker off half back. If he can't do it then needs to go

Agreed we should look at a mid.

Can pick up a ruckman or kp back or small forward with our 3rd pick, psd or rookie draft.

Small forward or kp back (depth) I don't see as crucial.

I am one of Strauss' biggest dreamers but he needs to be able to make use of his skills (needs to be given a chance though).

I think the days of bringing in players for 1-2 game stints are over.

Strauss has a great kick, speed and decision making - A perfect mould for a rebounding play maker.

Having back up like that is similar to having Italy on side in a War.

Not very reassuring..

Tell that to the Britons and the Gaulls! :-)

Have been talking him up all year from what I have seen and he will be available at 40

Tom Shanahan, if Patrick Cripps lasts that long in the draft he would also be a very good get. As others have said we need mids and a lot of them.

IMO Dean Kent has shown enough to suggets he can play as the small forward with an ability to rotate through the middle

Doesn't necessarily run or kick with the smoothest of actions but I'll be damned if there is a more efficient highlights package out there than this one.

Of course it's not highlights against the best Under 18 players and it's only highlights but if the rest of his game is half as good then I'd take this guy with pick 9 yet alone pick 40.

These picks are were the recruiters earn their pay, and I'm hoping like hell that we can find a hidden gem here ala Hird or Swan, or even our own Mcdonald. It could be argued we have found greater value from our lower picks as opposed to our higher picks recently. Hopefully we get a future gun at 9 (Freeman) and a solid contributor at 40.

I'm sticking with my initial pick. Cameron Giles. 195cm KPD with pace and a good kick. If we were to loose Frawley at the end of 2014 I don't want to see us putting Pedersen or Dunn in to replace him.

We've recruited Tyson, Vince, Michie, Cross. We'll get Freeman at Pick 9 and could still take someone like Mav Weller or Kyal Horsley as a delisted free agent. We're taking care of the midfield, now let's make sure we keep a balanced list and take Giles at Pick 40.

Like the way you think and believe the new game in town is to stay ahead of the curve. In that regard we probably need a plan "B" for Hogan as well.

IMO its simply ridiculous that the stronger clubs in cahoots with the players association and others can entertain the abolition of compensation picks. Doesn't fly and they are simply talking their own book. The whole drafting thing is flawed the way it currently stands. Maybe the drafting club should have the call on player retention for an initial longer period.

Has anyone checked the highlights package for Darcy Byrnes-Jones. Elite speed, and endurance. Doesn't miss a target either.

Reminds me of a young Matty Whelan. (I'm sure a couple of 'Landers just had to tame their savagery, just a little bit!)

Highlights package below:

Knightmare has him down as a late Collingwood pick. Hiding something them there Pies!!!

I'm not sure who we will pick, but they won't be sexy.

Just honest young footballers to play a role.

Posted

one role we need is a tall rebounding defender... like a Grant Birchall or Andrew Mackie type

Watched Tom Cutler video and fits the bill perfectly. 190 cms good pace and skills, versatile and good 2nd efforts. Predicted draft range 25-35 but my slide to 40 , I hope.

Nathan should also convince his brother to withdraw from the national Draft and opt for the Pre-Season Draft where we have #2 pick.

I reckon Isaiah Miller could fill that void and a very good chance he'll still be available at Pick 57.

187cm, 82kg

Eli Templeton is probably more realistic than Gartlett and Jones.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
