They both prefer to play footy on their terms and are both semi morons.

Don't see how replacing one with the other is a win in any terms.

Prefer Col to stay as well.

Shaw has actually been a very solid player for years despite his IQ rating.

Col is still yet to have his "Breakout" year.

In terms of trading it is a win.

This is exactly I thought the Bombers should have been excluded from free agency this year in addition to the first tw rounds of the draft (with also no ability to trade back in). They will get it done in FA and most likely trade back into the first two rounds, which effectively means no penalty.

I do hope Col stays.

You call Col a "semi moron".....then you prefer him to stay?????

I take it you have met Col often enough to know this first hand????

There are several reasons for our poor on field performance. One is our failure to develop the young talent on the list, another is our failure of our senior players to compete consistently and the other is injury.

Along with other senior players, Sylvia has failed to compete with the top players for many years. The performances just aren't there. I think it's the right time for both parties to part.

We seriously over-rate our own sometimes.

well you wouldn't be replacing one with the other anyway

col is a fa and we would get fa for him

shaw would cost a high pick or a player trade

so it would be a net loss (at least on paper), not a one for one

If you are talking about Shaw on output alone you are comparing one of the best and most consistent half backs to a struggling half forward who has only momentary impact in a few games a year.

Shaw has proven to be a much better footballer, there is no comparison.

Pick 3? WTF?! Dreaming.

3rd round pick.

I agree pick three is ridiculous but the compensation bands aren't based on how good a player is.

They are based on player payments and bnf finishes. If he is in our top couple of paid players he may automatically air in the same band as the top couple of players at every club. That is a pick immediately after your first round pick, which for is is 3.

If he is in the second band that would be end of first round (pick 17?) And third band is after 2nd pick (pick 19?). As one of our only senior pays and therefore probably one of our highest paid players and with top 5 bnf finish this year, he would have to fall into one of those bands.

Higher than he is worth but we don't make the rules.

No I was just making a general comment......We often think a player from another side will be great for us which is often does not turn out that way.....The Adams thread for instance, If you listened to all the praise over him you would believe he is Gary Ablett.......Not saying he won't be but he is just a kid who has had a good season.

Last year we lost Moloney and Rivers. Both high in previous BnF's, both on the top line of player payments for us. We gained back Byrnes (Geelong got no compo for him).

We got pick 48.

Sorry this article says player age and contact value and length to determine compensation.

http://m.smh.com.au/afl/afl-news/afl-free-agency-how-it-works-20121001-26ue3.html

there are 5 bands, the lowest is a third round pick. We will get more than that of we don't bring another FA in.

Looks to me like possible picks are 3, 17, 19, 35, or ~53. Subject to change based on other club's picks.

and we were rightly aggrieved.

We got the lowest band compo. But the problem is that both Rivers and Moloney left for little money and Moloney in particular had had a dog of a year.

I console myself with the thought that the FA compensation for Sylvia might be right on the appropriate range to get Zac Jones without paying overs.

I'm really worried that the AFL still haven't figured out the loophole they've created with Free Agency, where recruiting a free agent is effectively gaining a draft selection for free (in list terms).

Essendon

+1 Goddard

+1 Sylvia

That's two top-5 draft picks, without having to make the development investment either. And next year? LeCras? Kade Simpson?

Anyway, I'm not keen on Heath Shaw, myself, but, I guess he fills a role we'd need. But at what cost?

That would be ideal, either Jones or his ilk.

Gain Goddard on 700k + for four years only to force Crameri out the next. I think it's working fine, clubs can't afford to keep everyone. Pies will loose one of Daisy or Shaw, the good news for everyone else is they would rather keep Daisy but Shaw is still contracted for two years. Either do what Geelong has done or loose players. I suppose Cloke would still be laughing. Edited by Al's Demons

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
