Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

The Successor

Looks like the successor will come from a team likely to play in the grand final. As Josh Mahoney alluded to in the 'Watts close to signing' article today.

So it looks like Burns may stay and take on the job at West Coast.

Leaving Simpson from Hawthorn or a smokey in Brett Kirk who is currently midfield coach at Freo and by all reports is still close to Paul Roos.

Possibly Tudor from Sydney too but less likely IMO.

Exciting times ahead!

That's how I read it, it seems that the person concerned will be involved in the GF and I'd put money on it being Simpson; experience will be he telling factor.

I think they may have identified some really strong "new coach" candidates and because the club had made it known we weren't going down that path some exceptional lateral thinking was done and we have our current situation. No rumours or club sources just my own view reading between the lines.

I could certainly see Parkin going for it, but the underlying driver I think is Jackson's belief in Roos as the best candidate and doing what he needed to do to get Roos on board. At the same time he's then formulated this plan with Roos and when he applies his pragmatism and business thinking it makes sense.

Now I don't want to do I told you so's and sound like we did when we heard the rumour that Melbourne snatched Neeld away from Adelaide, but I really liked hearing reports on MMM pre game from fat head Barrett that potential coaching candidates in Tudor and Simpson were preferred the Melbourne senior assistant gig under Roos than the Brisbane senior coach job. That says a hell of a lot for a Roos.

I think this is part of it, a big part. Having quality first timers and probably not enough faith in the older brigade probably helped him formulate the plan. He wasn't going to let Roos get away.

For someone like Simpson who wants to be a career coach it makes perfect sense for him to do another term as an assistant under someone like Roos, particularly when the job is his in the next few years.

In oder of Accepability :

Matty Knights

Jade Rawlings

Brett Kirk

Junior

Micky O

However I think the assistant successor may come from one of the 4 remaining clubs or either West/Knights otherwise it would be announced by now

We have Roos, check. We have Allison, forward coach, check. But we need an Einstein of a midfield coach. Who is it going to be? That is one of our biggest selections for next season.

i have no idea whom would be the best successor, with regards to coaching. Hopefully roos and co will sort that out.

However as supporter watching the game all my life like everyone here on this site.

I thought that someone like Brett Kirk is the standout. He was a great player, was the heart and soul of the team during the premiership at the Swans.

He was one of the least skilled players. Didnt have a big Mark, or long kick, he wasnt flashy.

but he had massive heart, and would drag the team with him.

he would work himself into the ground.

He basically fulfilled his potential and was a star.

He would be a fantastic leader and no doubt coach.

To think hes going to be a potential premiership assitant at Freo this year, then come and join Roos is a dream.

p.s I am biasised as Kirky is local boy and I saw his journey from when he would rack up 40 positions as a kid in the Ovens and Murray. But his record stands up.

Kirk was a heart and sold player but not one that when I have heard him speak or commentate lends himself to understanding the strategic sides of the game that is required by your senior coach. Good addition but think as annointed successor would be a stretch.

Put your money on Kirk.

Exactly what we need. I believe Roos anointed him Captain of the bloods. That itself says it all.

I don't agree, being a good player/great leader doesn't guarantee he will be a great tactician.

I hope it's Simpson.

But, like everyone else here, I wholly defer to the judgement of our Jedi Master.

I too defer to the master. Can we have Simpson as 'Senior assistant' and Kirk as midfield?

I think his crazy Channel Seven intro has driven a lot of people off. I suspect he'd be much better behind closed doors than in front of a television camera.

You mean this one Chook?

IMO Adam Simpson is the absolute standout.

As much as I'm a Doc Holliday fan I cannot see Roos getting a group of assistants that all aspire to be head coach and then letting them have a gunfight O.K Corral style.

It just doesn't seem Roos' style. Roos has said and others within the club have continually stated that an understudy will be appointed for many reasons including assurance that the players know who the coach/s will be for potentially the next decade.

Stability (after years of confusion and mayhem) is paramount for this club to go forward and stay the course.

spot on, IMO.

Geez, I bet it's going to be a while before he lives that one down. Poor bugger probably didn't write it and was probably coerced into doing it because of his image as a thinking man's footballer. Poor bugger.

I wonder what role the coach selection panel featuring David Parkin has had in all this "successor" selection process?

Intersting question. I heard a Roos interview with Parkin (and i think a couple of other 774 people) and Roos said that Parkin had inspired the idea for him in Sydney with the succession plan Parkin had in place with Brittain

Just on my computer whilst watching the footy show and I think Damien Barret just said Roos has spoken to Burns and he is pretty much our successor.

I think - I was multi-tasking so don't shot me down if wrong but any truth behind that?

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

UNDER THE PUMP by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
