That's why I like Viney already. Football brain.

He won't have one for long if he keeps using it as a ramming device!

When the oldest club in the competition gets beaten by 2 expansion clubs, back2back, in their 2nd and 3rd seasons in front of a crowd of 13,840.......happy with that afl?

Posted

Hardly even worth replying to ridiculous hyperbole like this, but both Grimes and Trengove had more possessions than Gary "best player in the AFL" Ablett, and across town, they also had more than Nick Maxwell and Kieren Jack (Swans co-captain).

He went overboard, but they're still looking like very average footballers. We're not building an elite midfield with them in it if they don't vastly improve. You can already see the gulf in class between them and Viney for instance.

Posted

Shannon Byrnes should never play again YOU WON A PREMIERSHIP FFS SURELY YOU KNOW HOW TO KICK YOU MUPPET !!

Davis I thought was ok ... He competed well and brought the ball to ground

Viney was solid

Nathan Jones is amazing

Garland killed it

The rest were ok but 10.17 at afl level is pathetic

The positive was that we were ahead in all the possession stats [except tackles] for the first time this season.

Posted

Fair summary Jaded. Also, stick Evans back in, whom I really rate, and highly competitive

Posted

And BTW, Watts must be signed. Smart footballer and salubrious kick.

He's gone. It felt like he was being banished/punished.

Posted

Ablett had 19 possis and was well held.

That's a good effort considering what a star he is.

Apparently, It was Garland who took the role on Ablett .

Posted

I suppose if I calm down and look at the performance I can say that 2-3 good mids into this side and we are very competitive.

Also for those that knock Spencer, I thought he has played a couple of very nice games for us. At least with his crazy kicking style he can actually pass the ball to a team mate, something Nicholson and Byrnes will never do.

Also Terlich needs to be told to give the ball off and not try to beat the field, he has gone backwards as a result. Clisby has overtaken him.

Posted

Davey going should free up salary cap space. He's on good coin this contract.

I think his was front ended.

Most of the coin was in the first two or three years of his new signing.

Posted

Can't agree with the Byrnes hatred. Yes, he missed his shots, but when was the last time one of our forwards had 6 scores? When was the last time we had a small forward capable of getting 6 scores? Sure, if he'd gone 5.1 we won the game, but he's hardly the only culprit. Personally I'm thrilled that he got that involved. Now all we need to do is get him to handball to players' hands instead of their feet.

Posted

Watts is a gun, clubs will be lining up, Jack Watts is surrounded by absolute rubbish, players that wouldn't be anywhere near gettnig a gig at other clubs.

If Watts leaves, we'll get a top ten pick for him, absolutely certain of that, Jack Watts is rated more highly now - than he has ever been, and rightfully so.

316 we have got to make sure we keep Watts.

With a good midfield he will fire. I have no doubt.

Posted

I agree, watts must be signed. We shouldn't give up a class player. I know he can be soft but will be very valuable in a good side. The incompetence that surrounds him (Nicho, Tappy, Byrnes) was breathtaking tonight. There is zero confidence and it is like the game of Footy is foreign or new to them. I still wonder about the effect of Neeld's stultifying tactics and the residue in their psyche.

Posted

He's gone. It felt like he was being banished/punished.

Silly comment.

I hate him being played down there, but he did change the course of the match. He was the difference in the second and third quarters, and it was a good move by Craig.

It just lasted too long, but it has nothing to do with us punishing him. We were actually punishing ourselves with that dumb tactic.

If we knew he was gone, he wouldn't be getting a game.

Posted

Byrnes kicked 1.6 - terrible return no doubt, but it means he was in a position to score at least 7 times. We and he ought to expect better, but I don't think it is reasonable to be overly harsh. He could just as easily have walked away a hero tonight; more than can be said for most of our players in most of our other games.

Anyway, we played ok and should have won. Amazing how that feels bearable these days; I guess it's all relative.

Posted

Thats the best our midfield has played since 2011

We took it right to their midfield who everyone creams themselves over.

Did Craig do anything different this week I wonder?

McKenzie came in and Viney lifted.

Posted

Positives:

- IMO we were at least even in terms of the better of the play. We dominated the last quarter and were better in the third quarter, and won the first. The midfield did their job relatively well this week, something I don't thing I've said all year.

- Viney, what can be said that hasn't been said already? Kids a gun and is being asked to do a job usually expected of a 21+ year old, and he's doing a sterling job. Should get his we deserved NAB rising star nod this week, a disgrace if he doesn't.

- Fitzy, played a lone hand up forward and managed to take some excellent marks in difficult conditions. Missed that easy shot at the end, but a blemish on an otherwise good performance.

- Jordie and his job on Ablett, yes he had help but he was excellent and should be acknowledged by all this who criticise him. Don't worry I'm not asking you to eat humbe pie or anything, but definitely should be recognised for doing one of the best jobs on GA that anyone has done all year.

- Jonesy, he's just Jonesy and always should be in the positives. Looked like a train wreck and dived into every contest wanting more.

Negatives

- This was a winnable game BIG TIME. We had it all in front of us and needed to take it, but didn't. When we needed to be clean we gifted them possession. When we needed goals we kicked behinds. And when we needed to take the game on and go all in, we slowly worked it on the boundary line and persisted with Watts as loose man in the defence. If these were instructions from Craig then there is no way in hell he should be coach next year. The suns were also down on rotations, how about we take advantage of that?! As I said in the gameday thread, suns didn't win this we lost it.

- Kicking for goal. 10.17 is a poor effort and indicative of how bad we are. There were some basic shots that Casey players would be [censored] at missing, do your bloody job when the team needs you. I'm looking at Byrnes who should be dropped for his misses, he does his job and we win the game.

- Trengove, I keep waiting for the old Trenners to break through but it doesn't seem to happen, another underwhelming game from him. I really want him to be the player we thought he would be!

Overall a much better effort, but I'm sick of paying my membership for effort.

Posted

Yeah, Davey has been our highest paid player over the past few years, lucky he wasn't paid on performance.

MFC is lucky I don't have the broom.

U bring up a good point TOS.

As a standard going forward ALL MFC players should be on performanced based contracts.

I am sure there would be an improvement on field then.

What good is a player who takes 6 shots on goal and only nails one?

We are crying out for a good small forward, but a 31 year old with suspect kicking is not the answer.

I always hoped Jetta would come on as a small forward, but he seems to have disappeared into a black hole.

Blease, if he ever gets his fitness up to a level where he can run more than 50 meters without spewing, is the sort of player you want as a small forward.

But he didn't I am so sick of some people kissing players asses his job is to kick goals he is an experienced player who gets paid to kick goals I dont care that he got the chances big whoop he gets paid to convert them. Also if he handballs to someones feet again I will kill him

I thought Spencil was good. He and Gawn provide for a bright future in the ruck division.

Unfortunately for Davis, he will have to put up a very good case for another AFL game. Completely out of his depth.

Bad management of the MFC for the past SEVEN YEARS is the reason we got beat by two expansion clubs WWS.

The AFL has played a part but we were our own worst enemy.

The good is that on another day he might have kicked 5.1. Yes, today it hurt, but next week with his kicking boots on he could win the match for us. We have been crying out for a small forward who can hit the scoreboard for years.

I do agree that Blease should be the answer, but he has consistently failed to deliver after that outstanding five goal haul. I'll take Byrnes ahead of him for the moment.

Posted

I think if we had Watts up forward in the last quarter we could have won.

We really needed someone who could take a contested mark (note I am talking about Watts & contested marks) and have the poise to go back and kick it.

We really needed to take some risks but we didn't.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
