Suprised there isn't a thread on him already given in the TAC Future stars program he's been listed to go at pick 2 on a few occasions now in the rolling draft.

http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-07-05/phantom-draft-form-guide

182cm, 73kg outside running midfielder who's been listed on the AFL website at Pick 6. If one of Dunstan or Sheed are likely to slide to our 2nd round pick would people be happy with Kelly or do we prefer Aish?

Anyone got anymore inside info on him if he'd be a good addition? Any chance his older brother may want to even come across and play some of his final seasons with him before retirement?

Lets not forget James Kelly was taken at Pick 17 in his draft, a selection we held after getting it from Fremantle for Farmer before trading it to Geelong for Bizzle. Only justice that we have a Kelly on the list after all these years.

He's not James Kelly's brother.

"Josh's dad, Phil Kelly, won two Sandover Medals in Western Australia before moving to Melbourne, where he played 61 games for North Melbourne in the 1980s before hamstring injuries ended his VFL career."

I know James Kelly's father Brendan.

I'm liking Scharenberg but haven't seen enough of any of these including Kelly, Aish & Sheed to make a decision. Would be good to have a priority pick.

Thanks for that. For some reason I thought he was a much younger brother like Andrejas and Shaun were to Peter Everit and Corey McKernan.

Egg on my face!

I had Ash and Lachie Hansen as brothers for a long time ...

DOM SHEED...

Thats who we should be getting and I have no idea why he is slipping so far down in draft calculations.

The kid is ready made for AFL, can work inside or out and kick goals...

The rest might be silky but we need guys who can get the ball.

At least he doesnt weigh a paltry 70 kg like Aish does.

Classy, but underwhelming.

I'm not sure what will set him apart at AFL level when everyone else has a tank like his.

It goes both ways though, when he is in an AFL system, his body will also catch up to others.

Aside from Kellys tank and his ability to rack up the numbers, he is also very good on his right side - which is rare for a leftie.

Personally, Kelly wouldn't be my top choice either, but I wouldn't be disappointed if we ended up going with Kelly.

There are no many flaws in this kids game.

Josh Kelly is almost a mirror of Tom Scully. Will be a good player because of his skills and ability to run & run. But he is slight and does not possess ability to get the hard contested footy.

More like a pick 5-6 for the Saints.

We need a Dunstan or Sheed, as a tough ballwinner.

I like the look of him. Obviously the recruiters see a lot more of these players and I also agree we need a strong over the ball player, which may not be Kelly's go, but he reeked of class, poise and good decision making to me. He also doesn't fumble, just like the best talents at AFL level.

I reckon he'll be a great player. But I'm not wedded to any player this year. Just don't stuff up.

I think I can beat that. A Melbourne supporting friend who is usually particularly cluey thought Fergus and Jack Watts were brothers

I think Fergus does have a brother Jack, but he's just not our Jack Watts.

Playing ammos maybe?

In a draft that seems to be devoid of standout midfield talent, Kelly would be the player I'd happily settle for.

The ability to spread and have players wiling to link up to create the extra man on the switch is very important in moving the ball from defense to attack in today's game. As noted by many, Kelly is the best runner in the class and knows how to accumulate the ball (something the Demon's list does not have).

Furthermore the more times he uses his disposal the better off your team will be, he has a very neat left-foot ala Nick Dal Santo.

Dominated the APS as a year 10 against much older and bigger bodies, and is an outstanding human being who will improve the standards and culture of the club.

Apparently we seriously considered him when we traded for Hogan, wouldn't be at all surprised if we pick him, but i'd prefer Aish or Sheed.

Certainly puts paid to any 'Go Home' factor... Stressing about one rising star leaving is enough

My only worry is... Is he a Scully 2.0? Super fit, can run all day, stands out in underage games but not so much AFL?

From what I've heard he has better skills, anyone care to confirm?

Very interesting to read all you're reviews and thoughts.

I have actually been privileged enough to play alongside Kelly & Freeman from u13s till now.

Being in the same team for a number of years, i have got to know them both very well.

Before i get onto them both, i'd first like to alert you that all these Phantom Drafts are rough rough estimates, as the national recruiting manager of Sydney spoke to us about how the Emma Quales & co want to know everything from clubs, except why would clubs tell them the truth. The players they rate in order so it can be public knowledge - this is these peoples profession they arent going to publicise their teams prized pick!!!
He even said last year a number of the players in the top 20 didn't even get drafted.

Both terrific blokes.

Freeman - is made for AFL. Explosive, powerful, competitor that from u13s day would tear the field apart. Get it from the centre, break the lines and kick goals. The beast inside him proves he has what it takes to make it in the next level.

Kelly - is a professional. Swift mover but very light frame. I for one, arent sold on him making it big time at the highest level. I can see a Cale Morton/Tom Scully all over. He is a runner!! but will take time to develop and dont think its what we can afford to waste our time with right now. I hope for his sake he makes it big time because he deserve. But for us MFC we should give it a skip. He is very silky and often finds time when he has the ball, but i can see how at AFL level he would get exposed!

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
