emma q has some interesting thoughts on the adams-shaw deal.

personally i disagree that it's a fair direct swap. adams has far greater upside than shaw.

but the real point of interest is this:

  • boyd certainty to go no. 1
  • kelly and billings a shot for 2
  • kolodjashnij firming for top 5

and as we know mcdonald is already confirmed for #8.

she's got aish, scharenberg and freeman possibly sliding to #6 if the mooted 6 for 11 and 27 deal happens, with west coast keen on sheed at #6 but they think he'll slide to #11 if that deal happens.

So who do you think we will pick at 9?

Posted

Hopefully we can get Anthony Miles as a delisted free agent or PSD and Maverick Wellar as a rookie. So it looks like we have pick 9, 40 ish and 55 ish, would like to get Garlett at 40 ish.

I get the feeling we aren't done yet and next week we will be trying to trade a few players out

Gotta say that all this prob puts magners chances to rest. The one I want to know about is clisby. Do we rookie him for one more year or use 53

Definitely hold on to Clisby, he really showed a bit down back. Good run and aggressive as well.

Out of interest run me through Dawes' injury history at Collingwood and how it relates to his soft tissue injuries at Melbourne, which I think were caused by an increase in fitness training due to him reverting from ruck/deep forward back to his more suited role as a lead up high motor forward.

Or how Clark's freak lisfranc injury is related to some other collision injuries he had at Brisbane.

Same with Michie, his foot injuries were behind him. Plenty of AFL players have foot injuries, just this year alone with he Jamar, Evans and Trengove. We've had Garland before. They do recover if managed well.

Tyson's PCL was a one of injury as well. Of course every knee injury adds up but he's not Joel Selwood.

At the end of the day Tyson and Michie probably came cheaper because they didn't get game time due to injury but that shouldn't be a representation of their talent and I wouldn't necessarily label them injury prone.

Apart from breaking his knuckle, which has meant he isn't as strong a mark, I thought Dawes missed a fair chunk of 2012 with calf injuries and only came back towards the end of the season. Isn't that what kept him out or underdone all of last year?

I deliberately didn't mention Clark and never said his injury had anything to do with anything. I was looking at players with previous injuries we have picked up.

And in terms of foot injuries, they're often horrible. I'd say Jamar, Evans and Trengove haven't really proved they have fully recovered and I'd also point out it took Grimes the best part of two years to get over his foot problems, although it looks like he has now. Now that you mention Clark, his foot injury has cost him the best part of two years as well. I'll believe he can get back to his best when I see it. I was thinking about Michie's foot troubles in that context.

I know nothing about Michie and you may well be right about those injuries being behind him, I'm happy to admit I'm not 100% familiar and if I'm wrong, I'm wrong!

One way or another, every player in the AFL has injury histories.

Very good point. I guess I was thinking that it seemed our had relatively significant, quite recent histories. But you're completely correct.

Posted

Well, yeah, but we did our DD on Dawes, didn't we, and took him knowing full well he was injury prone and had calf trouble.

Tyson might be fantastic, but he played 3 games last year. Michie played 1 and none in 2012, straight out because of injury.

Just stating the facts and don't get me wrong, I'm stoked we are landing good players. I just find it interesting that, given our problems getting players on the park in the park in the past, we're picking up players who have injury histories.

I understand what your saying, but its pretty rare for players not to have injury histories. Its an intense game, any player we go after is likely to have had some sort of issue, not always reported to the public.

Greenwood psd

Cross dfa

Pick 9 midfielder

Bring on 2014

We have to try and get someone through the psd...

Pretty sure Greenwood's contracted. Would give pick 53 or whatever it is though.

Maybe Lyons?

I hope so. I just can' t accept 22 approx for Vince. He could be gone in a year. Add Lyons and ok with deal.

Cant say im wrapped with an ordinary 28 year old for an early pick

Any chance of us snatching Taylor Adams from the clutches of the Magpies at the last second with pick 9?

That would be sweeter than pie.

Would be a coup.

Kicks very well off both feet has good strength knows where the goals are and can actually find the footy... ticks all the boxes for mine. He's 28 not 48 for god sake people on here need to let the age factor go.

28 and 10 days too.. Only just out of 27 which if is what he was we'd say is a perfect age for who we're targetting. Ignore age and appreciate the quality he will bring.

Exactly right. He is a proven AFL footballer and we did very well to get him to agree to join us

Why? If he decides to retire after one year what would you say then? If we get 3 years out of him that would be a maximum of 60 games. How many games would you hope to get out of a pick 22, I would suggest a lot more.

I agree he will bring experience and talent and as I said I just put the price on him as too much but ok if Lyons was included. Anyway it is what it is and our list is getting better.

He'll probably play more games than Maric, Blease, Strauss, Tapscott and Gysberts!

And if we don't start winning games in the next 24 months then what does it matter no one will play 100 games for us again!

Vince for 23 isn't great. Vince for Sylvia is pretty good

Sticks in my mind watching Vince play in the SANFL last year.

They dropped him back for disciplinary reasons and he punished the SANFL.

Bernie's ability to rack up the ball the day I watched him in the SANFL, I thought this guy is footballers footballer.

Bernie has the ability to rival Jones as a key midfielder, hopefully he can get close.

Don't worry about pick 23, worry about our midfield next year and the year after, because if it's not up to it - what do we tell young Jesse?

It's up to the MFC to start producing and showing players that we are the club they should be sticking with.

Frawley and Hogan are our two main worries and we can't afford to bank on a kid at 23, we don't have that luxury.

I think this is how we've got to look at the trade. Net gain and all that . . . .

MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
