Anyone hearing that Sam Reid is on his way to Freo????

Maybe our pick 2 could facilitate a trade between freo and Sydney...with a couple of players coming our way?

Please elaborate.

I reckon we just draft Josh Kelly. Kids a natural leader and will be a champion. Works hard and just broke the combine record. Yes he is thin but he has put on some weight already. We almost took him last yr in the MD. Cwnt go wrong here.

We will regret it if we trade for some B graders in a few years when this kid is tearing it up and leading his team to victory.

I really cant see us trading pick 2 tbh there is just not enough quality out there and any player worthy obviously is a needed and must keep at the particular club. Lets draft best available build our own list properly this time round

i agree with the sentiment.... Only id pick Aish...

Aish will be a star of the game.... And he already looks good in red and blue...

A third or fourth year mid from Gold Coast or more likely GWS is where I see our pick 2 being used. It only takes one of their better mids to want to come home and Melbourne is one of the rare teams to have both the pick and the salary cap space to make it happen. Shiel, Tyson, Treloar?

Posted

Why would gws or gold coast want yet another pick?

Because it will be better than the B/C grade players other teams will offer in exchange.

The key, as always, is the player wanting to return home and nominating us as their preferred team.

Rumour has it (and please remember this is a rumour thread) that Sydney are going to make a big play for pick 1 involving Mummy and Reid to GWS and possibly an established midfielder. Whatever the mix, they are going to have a crack at pick 1. Got to clear some salary cap space and want to add youth. Tippett and Pike in ruck, Buddy CHF and Boyd at FF. This would surely have all other clubs screaming to Vlad.

Source: an in-law relative who has had connections at the Swans for 40 years. Don't know if this one is true, but same person told me 2 mths ago Buddy would be at the Swans in 2014 and was buying property in Sydney. I laughed at the time. Like all rumours, take with a grain of salt.

I followed Aish's uncle at Norwood as a kid. He was an absolute champion. It sounds like his nephew is of a similar ilk. Because of that I wouldn't draft him. Michael Aish was exquisitely skilled. But he was built so that a strong gust of wind would blow him over. He also struggled with the physical side of the game. In SA, while there was a degree of hard hits and violence, ball players like Michael Aish were generally left alone. Not so in the VFL or AFL. I worry the younger Aish will just be worked over something terrible. I wouldn't use pick 2 on him.

I doubt there will end up being much difference between them. aish & kelly

but IMO the go home factor is starting to grow, & will continue to grow rapidly... we are starting to witness it more & more lately.

so I would start to pick local ahead of interstate.

Just reading the articles up on the HUN website and we are barely mentioned in any of them which I found interesting. It doesn't mean we aren't involved, but we clearly aren't major players.

We aren't mentioned with Heath Shaw, they claim Shane Savage will go to either Carlton or Brisbane in a direct swap for a ruckman, we've spoken to Adams but he will choose either the Pies or Geelong, Jed Lamb and Travis Colyer will both re-sign at their respective clubs and so on. I know I may be pointing out the obvious and it's nothing new, and that we can't take everything we read at face value as I'm sure we are doing things behind the scenes, but we don't seem to be as active as us supporters may have hoped.

One article does say that we have officially offered Pick 2 to the Lions for Tom Rockliff but they rejected it straight away.

Anyway thought i'd just put in a small summary of the articles from the HUN today. While it doesn't mean things won't happen it certainly looks, at this stage, that things aren't necessarily going our way.

All I can say there is I hope they are up to their usual standards.

Inhope we can trade for a few talented mids and rumours I've heard suggest we are at least viewed a little better but really good drafting alone can change a clubs fortunes in one season. Freo in 08 and the hawks did very nicely in the tambling draft.

Thanks for the summary WB, however I am not as concerned as others. I think MFC are in a great position in regards to trade and draft, no one knows wat the hell is happening other than those inside the club which means there are no leaks coming from the club different to previous years.

I believe we are in a very good position in regards to pick 2, knowing if we don't trade it for an established quality midfielder that's fine we go to the draft and pick up the best midfielder there. Aish/Kelly, both hopefully will be 10+ yr midfielders for our club. I know It will take a bit longer but if we get it right it can also set us up for sustained success in the future, Massive period for our club to get the selections right and confident our football department will this time around.

And then with pick 20 odd may be able to snare a dunstan or garlett with a bit of luck if we retain the pick of course.

Then the Sylvia compo pick and our later ones either trade for fringe players at other afl clubs and add midfield depth or through the draft.

However I feel we are in a great position and will be intrigued to see how we go in the next month, feeling pretty happy and can't wait to see what unfolds.

Go dees!!!

We already have Hogan from the draft and if he was in it he would have probably gone 1 or 2, so whatever we do, we've snared a very good footballer before the draft begins.

I would hope we can pick up a couple of quality mids with the early picks and a couple of mature players with the later picks.

Why would gws or gold coast want yet another pick?

In the case of GWS, the addition of pick two to pick one which they already have, gives them a fair hold at the top end of the draft and an even stronger position to deal through the trade period.

But honestly though, what relevance does that have in reference to this year's trading and drafting?

Hogan was taken last year, regardless of when he'll be able to make an impact.

It's almost making excuses for a poor trading period before it even happens, to me.

Anyway, in reference to other posts above concerning Herald Sun rumours and whether we're involved in trade talks...

That only shows the contempt the media has for us.

Sure, some players would disregard us out of hand as a destination, but we aren't a leper colony.

It's just sexier for the papers to write about rumours involving the bigger teams.

True we have already effectively got pick 1 and he has had a year of AFL training and will get a full pre-season unlike his contemporaries. I wonder what his rising star odds are?

GWS have pick 2 and we have 3.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
