I don't understand the logic of saying that because our previous early picks haven't worked out, and our team is now bereft of promising young stars, we should not get any more early picks.

I believe the argument is that, since we've already been given PPs, and of our own fault we messed them up, we don't 'deserve' to get another chance. The idea being we've made our bed, now we lie in it.

It's not a good argument. The AFL's financial bailing out of us goes to show that it's not a good argument.

If the AFL considers us to be an impediment on the league, which almost everyone does, then they would do worse than to give us a PP. Whether we are allowed to use it, or are forced to trade it, is another matter.

We still haven't received our last beginning of first round PP. The AFL bankrolled franchise took that off us with their massive salary cap advantage. The compo for that is Hogan who will be worth the wait hopefully. People conveniently forget this when saying we wasted our picks. Sure we picked badly a few times but the only PP we have received that hasn't been stolen by AFL largesse was I think Blease.

7 crappy years and the only thing extra we have to show for it atm is an early second round pick. We haven't been swimming in PP's and anyone who suggests we have is full of [censored] which accounts for 99% of the footy media.

The problem with this option is that we've seen through the two GWS mini-drafts that clubs are very reluctant to trade any high quality experienced players. Of the four trades that were made, none included players going to GWS.

I think that's got a lot of merit - a pick that has to be traded for a player. GWS traded for picks and it could be assumed that there wasn't a market of established players but how much of that was GWS strategy?

Other clubs complaining that we've wasted our picks is a bit contradictory - it just left the good players for them to pick.

I find it pretty easy to justify.... if you actually look the rules and how they are evaluated, past drafting history has NOTHING to do with it.

It is based on performance over a period of time, continual lack of success is the real factor.

We could blow a million picks in a row and it has no impact.

I find it very difficult to argue with people who say we don't deserve a PP. The number of high draft picks we've pi$$ed away in recent years is staggering.

If the assistance we are receiving doesn't include a PP, I won't be complaining.

This is not entirely true - after all every club gets a first round pick, it's just where it falls.

Carlton got 3 number one picks in a row, Collingwood got a PP the year they picked up Pendelbury & Thomas, liekewise St Kilda when they got Reiwoldt & Kosi as 1 and 2.

The only year in recent times where we received the bonus was the $cully/Trengove year. $cully was going to be our Judd, but we lost him before he'd fired a shot.

Where we can rightly be criticised is about the players we've taken with high picks - the likes of Cook, Gysberts, Bate, Morton who all failed to deliver, while we didn't select players like Talia who have gone on.

McLean is now at at Carlton,and we are still waiting for Watts, Strauss, Blease, Tapscott, and arguably Trengove to realise their potential consistently. Looks like Hogan will be a gun,likewise Viney, not sure yet about Barry.

We would certainly qualify for a PP under the old rules about consecutive years of poor performance. I for one couldn't care less what other clubs think.

No issue with getting help from the AFL as its clear our board has failed poorly & we neeed it.

My post wast to highlight that a PP alone will not fix our list......& this was the pathway which resulted in tanking & destoyed the culture.

geez your wrong mate, our culture has been weak for decades, improved thru the 80's, then again started to taper down, 'til, after the millenia, it cascaded... with front running & no responsibility for the opposition.

after, the way we went about the rebuild,,, it was wrongly handled, & led,,, it crashed.

we were approaching rock bottom in 2011, & it needed cleaning up, & we've just made a scapegoat...

Does there ever come a point where a club is held accountable for the decisions it makes? Or do you just keep on throwing top end talent at them until they, hopefully, get it right? It hasn't helped us a great deal up until this point.

I feel pretty conflicted on this issue and judging by the responses in this thread, I'm in the minority. When it comes to digging ourselves out of this hole, appointing the right people in positions of influence and some financial assistance is the bulk of the battle, I would've thought.

I acknowledge that under the current system, we certainly qualify, and perhaps notions of deserving it are best left to one side.

Anyhow, that's the last I'll say on it.

I agree for the long term this is probably more important than the list. But this Club is dead in the water in every respect until the team becomes competitive and that will only happen with an improved list. Hopefully with the right people in place the right recruiting decisions will be made and we'll start climbing out of this hole. In the meantime the Club should be on a life support footing. There's not much point having people working on commercial, sponsorships, community relationships, memberships while the team is this unattractive. I'd put all that money into the Football Dept until it is competitive and then worry about everything else.

I think the way we recruited last year and the way those players are coming on shows we now have a decent recruiting team in place and we can develop talent. BP was obviously totally out of his depth in that role and I'm not quite sure how he got the job in the first place, must've been mates with someone. But I trust now if we do get a PP we will be able to get a good quality kid and develop them the right way and I'm very confident about this. I actually don't care either way if we get one or not as I don't think that one pick will make or break us. I think the only way for us to get better is through hard work from everybody involved at the club. A PP would just be a bonus.

Those who claim we don't "deserve" a priority pick clearly misunderstand what this competition, at its core, is really about. They must clearly think it's about equity, fairness, supporters and premierships. The AFL's core organizational principle is to maximize revenue. Will a priority pick to Melbourne make us more competitive? Yes. Will a more competitive Melbourne generate more money? Yes. Done deal.

To me, this isn't about Pick 1. We need a leg up, we are too far away from the pack. We cannot continue to turn over 10 players a year and hope we can get some diamonds in the rough and get above average in the early picks - we need help.

I love the pick-to-trade idea, am ambivalent to later picks or state league preference, and hate the salary cap help idea.

I'm surprised that the Foxsports poll shows around 40% think we should get a PP. Leaving aside the nature of these polls and the number of Demon-supporting hackers who know how to vote multiple times, such a high number is surprising given that most people voting would be avid supporters of other clubs.

Technically the afl signs off all trades to make sure they are fair and even and that nothing dodgy is going on ie buying players and if they aren't they stop then ala Tippett last year.

If they gave us a pick to trade and stipulated it had to be traded for a player they would be able to ensure fair value.

I agree with rpfc that GWS didn't Terry really hard but what they did get was good value for all their picks in return (ie top 3 picks).

Mini draft pick + our second round pick (pick 20?) or a reasonable player (ie watts) should be worth a very good player.

Our best chance is to have a player interested in leaving their club already - then the club will be keen to get the best deal they can get, which will probably be the mini draft pick.
