I just hope that contract considerations are clear about expected targets and performance.

I would only offer a salary based on our current ability to pay as a poor performing club with difficulties attracting sponsors and members.

Working with the current playing list and some defined improvement measures esp retention and committment to be followed with individual specification and improved results to turn around the sponsor supporter problems and bonuses to be paid if these challenges among others are met and overcome.

Roos and any coaching candidate should understand this type of challenge

To me that reads as him being very non-committal and I would take very little that is positive out of that. He has a very solid media job that probably affords him a very comfortable lifestyle free of the stresses related to coaching and he has stated in then past that he does not have the requisite desire to coach at the moment... and as he claims to not be motivated by money, I would assume that is pretty much key to him returning to coaching.

Would be nice to get him, but the way I read that article, it says nothing beyond what he has pretty much consistently stated on On the Couch in the past when questioned on the subject of coaching the MFC.

Freo had a reasonable list versus the MFC has a crap list.

It is going to take a few years to fix that, a proven respected coach will get that time.

If Roos coaches again it won't be about money. It would be about whether the challenge gets him excited & whether he is motivated or interested in coaching full time, the effect on his life etc. The club will have to sort itself off the field if we are any hope. One thing is for sure the club needs to find something that it aspires to or wants to represent because at the moment the club doesn't really have a football philosophy or identity. Roos would definitely bring this as he did at Sydney.

the club has to do what Jimma wished for & stood for,,, an Inclusive Footy club,,, one he & his son could think of with Pride... not about wins, but about love, rights, & community.... with these as an armoury, we have all the tools to take on the World... success will follow this philosophy.

Last night I was discussing this with my Brother who is a Lions member, he is of the opinion that the lions see Roos as the person to take over from Voss.

He claims that approaches have been made already.

Claims Roos is way more likely to move North from Sydney than South, weather / family reasons etc.

Do not be surprised if he knocks us back and takes the Lions job in October.

To get Paul Roos would be an enormous coup. What he would do for the team would be amazing, but what he would do for the club with member/supporter moral would be something else. It would surely bring back a few that have jumped off in the last 3 years. We need some positive energy at the club, I can't actually remember the last time we had any.

I have no idea.

Has he been approached already ? No idea

If he has and his change of public demeanor is as a result ?

Is Melbourne the most desirable challenge ? Would definitely be the most challenging.

The work that Roos put in to Sydney is still reaping benefits and probably will for some time. That club has grown to represent everything that we are not.

A lot of people commenting that Roos didn't build the list and Eade did.. but Roos coached them for a few years after Eade left. Also, and this I think is more important, Roos is the one along with the players to get the 'bloods' culture to what it is today. Our club needs this cultural buy in more than anything...

Question is do we have the players at our club that can instil a similar culture that Maxfield, Kirk and the others were able to do, these aren't the most gifted players, but they dragged the club along to great things!

Whether we land Roos or not, we really can't lose here.

The way I see it we are operating with a short list of 5 at the moment. That list is categorised into 3, in order of preference and urgency for engagement.

Category A - Paul Roos. This is the AFL's man and currently available. Every effort should be made to sign him in the short term, if we can manage this before the end of the season then great. Launch the propaganda, get the supporters and members involved and believing again and get ready for 2014.

Category B - Al Clarkson & John Worsfold, These 2 should sounded out now and then courted heavily at the end of the year should we not be able to land Roos between now and then.

Clarkson may pull the pin on his own career at Hawthorn should he not be able to get them over the line again this year. A $1million a year offer from the Dees would obviously make him a little less desperate to retain his current spot. On top of that there is a small chance the Hawthorn board will consider a change come the end of the year considering Clarkson may be viewed as underachieving with the list he has had. Couple that with the potential loss of Buddy and an aging list they may see a change of coach now rather than in 2 years time a little kick a long to reload just like Scott was at the Cats.

Worsfold looks in danger out west. Another coach that could be considered as having underachieved considering the lists and resources at his disposal. There is still a real chance of the Eagles missing finals and even a finals berth that ends in a R1 loss may not be enough to secure another tenure. Some have speculated Scott Burns is being setup to usurp JW in the short term.

Category C – Mark Williams & Rodney Eade. In my opinion I think both of these guys will jump at the chance to coach again and both would represent better than reasonable options. Because it is unlikely they couldn’t be convinced to take the job on they don’t necessitate the urgency of the other 3 and can wait for a little while to be approached. Doing this could even be construed as courtesy to their existing roles and employers.

I would fully expect each of these guys to put some conditions on the club in order for them to take on the role. Items such as salary, football department structure & staff and football department spend come to mind but considering we have AFL backing at this time it shouldn’t be impossible to meet things such as that.

The AFL have no choice but to assist us in rebuilding the club. The best way to ensure they get a return on their investment is to make sure we get the absolute best people in place to make it happen. But – this gracious assistance from the AFL won’t last forever, so we need to make it count, NOW!

Like Hird in 2010, I find Roos' statements to be equivocal, neither here-nor-there, and incapable of leading to conclusions one way or the other. If anything, Roos' comments are even more equivocal than Hird's were. Hird made those statements just months before signing.

I don't disagree with you and I have stated I would love to see Roos at the club as coach, however those comments of his left me in some doubt he would want to do it.

As for the money, I have no doubt he would be on substantially less then $1m p/a, but with his media work (Foxtel and printed media) as well as his coaching work with the Sydney Swans Academy (would there be a conflict of interests there - assuming he is still doing this?), I think it's probably fair to say he is very comfortably well off... and as I said, would our offer be enough to entice him anyway considering the pain and stress that would be a given?

What pitch could the club possibly give him to get him to listen? I'm pretty certain that in his position he would be pretty much across most things taking place at the club already, and it is pretty much accepted knowledge that the club is a basket case that needs mending in a very big way.

Coaching us, if it is the sort of salary we are expecting, will be way more lucrative than his foxtel gig. It is a painful and stressful proposition but he gets to put away millions for his family. Ask Tom Scully what sort of decision that is. I don't care if it is money that gets him here or not, once he's here he will be in it to win it
