Rookie elevation for Tom Couch & James Magner in this years draft?

I am assuming during this years draft Tom Couch & James Magner will be elevated to the senior list, as they are both in their final years as rookies.

Couch & Magner seem to play very well & consistent football at VFL level, and importantly understand each other on game day (something that is lacking at AFL level for MFC). With the lack of size and quality in the middle, along with MFC not being the club of choice for any regular 22 midfielders, surely they would add more to our young and developing midfield.

It would be nice to have players who could consistently gain 25+ possessions a game at AFL level.

Thought?

VFL Report v Collingwood.

Tom Couch: Tom played an excellent game. He had 41 disposals, seven inside 50s and kicked two goals. He is playing extremely consistent football and along with [James] Magner was combative all day.

James Magner: Jimmy played another excellent game in the midfield and also went forward kicking 1.2 and taking a number of strong marks (eight in total). A 40-possession game highlighted how he performed.

Both just run around playing their own game in the VFL and aren't up to AFL level. I'd delist both at the end of the year but if the club wants to persist with Magner for depth then so be it.

I never understood the need for both onto the list at once except if Neeld was trying to bring in hard workers for cultural value because they offer little by way of AFL prospects.

I expect to see Clisby elevated very soon and to play games for the rest of the year. He isn't as ready to go as these two but he's another in the Terlich/Matt Jones mold who can run and take the game on. Depending on his level of performance he may be good enough to get upgraded otherwise he'd be looking at a second year on the rookie list.

Mitch Clisby: Mitch played under some duress after being ill. This did not impact his performance and he was one of our best defenders, continually taking the game on with his speed and neat skills. He had 20 disposals and four inside 50s, which was a good contribution

Our other young rookie in Stark just hasn't had a good run at it so if they still think he has what it takes I'd be happy for him to get a second year as well.

The way things going Magner will probably walk out at years end. Still cant understand why Neeld wont play him...

Not sure how you can make that call on Couch yet.

There's no way we can call for their permanent promotion to the senior list without first seeing if they can bring their dominant VFL form to the AFL. Give them games in the second half of the year (we do no worse with them in the side than with Tapscott/McKenzie, for example). They'll have their careers on the line, who knows what they'll show.

No idea.

Frankly, they both should be playing to see whether they are worth a spot.

Give them both 6 games.

I don't care if it will make our midfield slow. It's already terrible.

Twenty per game would do for a start. We currently only have two such Senior-Listed players, N.Jones (23.27) and M.Jones (20.09).

Of course we also have Rookie-Listed Magner with 20.50 but he can't get a run for reasons which are unknown.

Interesting though regarding who will be our nominated rookie? Magner was first choice promotion but is available for another few weeks any way. Couch probably deserves a chance but it seems the coaching staff have decided that Magner and couch aren't up to it. Clisby may have noisy potential of all of them. But isn't performing as well at vfl level.

Who should be promoted for the second half of the year?

Posted

If these two aren't evaluated I won't know what to think or even do, they deserve their spot on the main list over a good 60% of the players... easily.

Couch would have averaged >30 possessions a game, a good amount being contested, has a high tackle rate, high I50 average, and probably the current favorite for the J.J. Liston.

Magner's overall statistical averages would be in the same category only slightly lower I believe.

If they never eventuate to that stardom category at the AFL level at the very least they would be reliable depth players like a Matt Jones, or Dean Terlich.

They should both be elevated (after a few games later this season) and are much better options than quite a few that are already there.

There are question marks about playing both in the same side but there is no doubt they are harder workers, better ball winners and tougher in the contest than many on the list.

What are they supposed to do ? Both have performed consistently at VFL level, the seniors are now so bad that we 15 goal defeats are the norm, and our midfield is shizen. Magner should not have been dropped in any event. Hardly reward for effort from where I sit.

I expect both to be delisted at the end of the year and mature age midfield replacements brought onto the rookie list at seasons end. eg Adam Cockie & Myles Sewell.

But that's just my train of thought.

Definitely see Clisby being elevated, probably our top rookie. I would say Magner will be upgraded, the way he goes about his training, the wya he dominates the vfl. It will ensure we have someone pushing for senior selection. I rate him as a depth player, could even take the Ryan Crowley/Clancee Pearce role and maybe become our new tagger?

Posted

I honestly can't decide. In the short term I think they would both strengthen the midfield, but I can't see that much long-term for them. They are both just a little bit off what we need to be a really good side. Bringing them in for the second half of the year would give us more ball-winning in the middle, but less pace and run. This is one I'll happily leave to the list managers to decide.

Posted

You cant doubt their efforts this year. They have been outstading in the VFL.

Couch seems to be really improving alot on where he was at the start of 2012.

41 disposals is outstanding. Id like to see him have a crack in the second half of the season.

I think he deserves it.

Posted

Both have been found wanting when tried in the seniors.

Couch hasnt been tried this year. Couldnt do any worse than the current crop of midfielders.

So we replace two kids who can't get a game with two other kids who won't get a game.

Neither should be elevated IMO. We would be better of getting games into younger players like Strauss, Toumpas, Viney, Taggart and Gawn.

That didn't work all those years ago. We should be getting games into youngsters yes, but the best performers should also be rewarded. I'd be having Magner and Couch in ahead of Strauss and Taggart at this point.

Posted

I'd be very surprised to see either of them on the list next year. Both of them play VFL style games rather than AFL. Neither of them have the speed nor are they damaging enough.

Clisby, on the other hand, is an interesting prospect if he can defend well enough.

No thanks on Couch unless he shows something in the seniors. Should definitely get a go for a few weeks (when we can elevate him) but I wouldn't be getting his number on your back.

I'm curious to know if people here who have an opinion actually watch these guys perform at casey ?? I do and i can say that magner has be great and very solid, couch has beaten him hands down the last few weeks. Tom finds the footy spreads to the right spaces and shows a composure that warrants a chance in the ones in the second half of the season.

After seeing a fair amount of Clisby I can see him taking over that dashing defender with excellent foot skills that James Strauss was meant to be.... James better pull his finger out.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
