Yes but once he controlled a board which wants a merger and is in control of the 'facts' it could be very hard for members to counter it. After a season or so Kennet tells us we are bankrupt, makes little effort to turn it around and says the only solution is merger.

Surely there is someone with the right qualities out there who could do the job without the danger of being a person with pro-merger history.

EDITED TO ADD: I know many members are desperate but I am staggered that anyone would take such a risk. DM may be useless but when drowning it is better to look around for a new life buoy than grab a hold of the nearest shark.

Secondly, forgive me for being cynical but why should the rank and file members have any confidence that another finance person is going to be any more successful than McLardy, Gardner, Szondy etc

Look at the bio's of our board members on the MFC website, majority are people involved in finance, insurance, economics, accountants etc the only one with any footy experience is Healy who is in a "casual vacancy" position. Clearly none of them have little to none idea about running a footy club or how to address the problem's Melbourne faces. Besides moving out to Casey (something which I think was set-up by the prior board) what exactly have they done to grow our supporter base? What have they done to expand our revenue streams? What business relationships have they used to bring sponsors on board? They seem like a bunch of abject failures in their roles at MFC if you ask me, despite what their finance/insurance etc pedigree is.

The problem isn't just his personality BH. It's how his personality impacts his brusque, tactless and inflexible management style. Victoria was a different beast when he took over. Cain wanted to cut spending and reduce the size of the public sector but the unions wouldn't allow him to do so. Victoria needed a more autocratic style of leadership in those days. In those days, there was too much consultation with a certain group when the silent majority was being ignored. What happened after 186 (I'm starting to sound like WYL) was that the playing groups concerns were mothballed and consultation was put in shade. We need to become a club that is respectful of all opinions, not just those of a select few.

Right now, we have the footy club in way too many different camps: those who were with the playing group during the reign of Schwab and those who were mates of the CEO, those who were pro-merger or anti-merger, those who were with Gutnick and those who were not. Some might think that those last two are old hat but I can guarantee there are those in the club who still hold enmities over these old battles. There needs to be some reconciliation between these groups and I think a bloke who once offered to sleep with the female contestants of a Greek beauty pageant and who was caught on a mobile phone describing a conversation with John Howard that was far from harmonious might not have the people skills to smooth over these personality clashes.

I encountered the same vibe from some in '87.
