Did you guys miss that Neeld said Watts had been sick? Maybe he's better now... I don't know, it may seem crazy, but it could just be that rather than some Brighton conspiracy...

Yeh but he didn't miss last week's game because he was sick, he missed because he was dropped

How come he didn't play last week yet was named as an emergency?

I bet both Toumpas and Watts will both play and both have good games. These guys believe they are good enough when they come up against kids.

Maybe he was dropped because of his performance when sick...

Maybe he was the only option, in case of "emergency"...

This is getting beaten up to much.

we just dont want to win - keep picking all these talls and meanwhile have no spread or functioning midfield...

Great to see big max gawn get a well deserved game after a long road back from injury. GWS have lost brogan, patton, D.Smith, hoskin-elliot and hampton. majority of them are all best 22 imo, so that can only bode well for us :) will defintely be going to this one just as i have the others, GO DEES!

It seems to me that Neeld & Craig have emphasised the first half against WCE, and are playing a team that performed well in whatever the KPI's were for those 2 quarters.

I am super-surprised to see Watts in there, Toumpas needs a break, Jamar is very lucky and Sellar just aint up to it but some consistency is good to see.

Gawn is a big in for us. He has yet to show his wares and I reckon he will be a gun.

Good to see Watts has bounced back from 2 of the worst overall games you'll ever see, by earning a spot... Sitting in the stands.

The standard has been set kids. Don't contest, don't play for Casey, you'll still get a game.

Culture change my arse.

I'm told he's also spent a good deal of time in the Spa, not to mention enduring a penance in The Comfy Chair.

I ticked the "Like this" box - I like the comment but I don't like the message from the club.

Toumpas should play at Casey this week for his confidence

Yep - what day do they play, and where?

Posted

Watts should play at Casey this week and stay there.

As they are discussing on AFL360 now, it was probably more about his attitude than his form... he was taken out last week and no doubt has been told that if he doesn't snap out of it and perform this week, then he may be looking at a long stint at Casey... as no one can doubt his ability and potential, it makes sense to me.

Yep, and they've dropped him before and he delivers the same inept performance.

I doubt both his ability and potential.

Pretty much the best team as I see it .

Probably the best team Neeld has ever chosen .

If we lose , blame me.

I couldn't really fault it apart from Pedo and Byrnes for some yoof.

That is not entirely true... for much of the second half of season 2012 he played very good football across the back line and was appearing to be cementing a position as one of our better defenders; this was after disciplinary action was taken (relegation)... I think the break didn't suit him and once again he is starting a season at quarter speed. Hopefully, having to sit and watch the team go around last week, will have given him the jolt he sorely needed.

Did you see his pre season? He played sub par round 1, sure, and round 2 he was ill the whole game. He does have good form on the board.

Did you see who won the NAB cup? And who came runner up? And how are those teams going now?

Pre season is fairy floss competition, it has nothing at all to do with the real stuff. Toumpas was getting a kick in the NAB cup.

I did see Watts' per season, not once did I see him impact an aerial contest with any vigor. Nor did he all of last year, and nor did he rounds 1 and 2. Yet he waltzes back in like king dick.

If you're happy moving forward with players that have no intensity and get a free ride, well enjoy another 10 years of failure.

This is why I love Cam Mooney. Here's the preview he gave on League Teams - some constructive critique on Watts rather than FIXATING upon the fact he didn't play last week as 90% of the gallery seem to have done, and in place of wisecracks and cheap shots, some actual positivity from last week:

"It's great to see Jack Watts back in and I hope if he's going to play centre half-back or down back, play on a man. I hope the club just makes him play on a man. Don't worry about trying to get him to play spare man. Look, it's very hard to try and organise to get a spare man down there, especially when you've got a very inexperienced backline, so just don't worry about playing games. Just make this guy play on someone. He is extremely athletic, extremely quick, he can beat opponents one on one so make him play on an opponent.

There's not too many positives down there right now but Nathan Jones, as usual, 28 possessions again last week, he's just an outstanding individual for that football club. Viney, again, 17 possessions, what a superstar he's going to be. And it was good to see Colin Sylvia, a couple of goals and had 20 possessions, after we gave him a little whack a couple of weeks ago, finally getting involved and showing some leadership so that is a great thing for the Melbourne Footy Club."

I may not share his confidence about Watts' ability to beat an opponent one on one (and in fact he's had a direct opponent more often than Mooney realises I think), but boy is it refreshing to hear someone look at the positives to build upon, no matter how small.

THE ACCIDENTAL DEMONS by The Oracle

In the space of eight days, the Melbourne Football Club’s plans for the coming year were turned upside down by two season-ending injuries to players who were contending strongly for places in its opening round match against the GWS Giants. Shane McAdam was first player to go down with injury when he ruptured an Achilles tendon at Friday afternoon training, a week before the cut-off date for the AFL’s pre-season supplemental selection period (“SSP”). McAdam was beginning to get some real mom

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team. Barassi died the
