WELCOME TO THE MELBOURNE FOOTBALL CLUB - CHRIS DAWES

Recommended Posts

I have a feeling that it will be a bit of work to get the Dawes trade happening.

I saw Derek Hine interviewed and he was asked about Dawes and how pick 13 would look pretty good. Hine replied that pick 4 would look better.

If that's the basis for the negotiation then ...... this may take a while. Or maybe Dawes stays at Collingwood.

Wouldn't be getting too disappointed by that AOB. Like many others, reckon he's a 2nd rounder. Collingwood currently have the salary to deal with.

A bit sensationalist, don't you think?

Not really, Moore has said he regrets the move from Collingwood. If Melbourne was a stronger club he would not be too concerned with regret, he would have embraced the club. Unfortunately we were going nowhere at the time and apart from some brief periods haven't been remotely successful over the past 40 plus years.

Chasing success by going after the Peter Moore's (Templeton, Diamond Jim, Big Carl etc.) of the world is a symptom of what has been wrong with the club.

I personally think the deal will be done for our 2nd round free agency compensation pick (most likely comp we will receive for our net free agency ins and outs) think that would be about right as it will prob be pick 27

That's about right pick-wise, so it'll either be that or Big Stef off to Eddieland. Maybe swap fourth rounders.

That's hilarious. Gotta love pre-trade posturing. I'm keen to see Dawes come across and I think we should be able to get something sorted. There have been some wacky comments from the Pies lately though, such as the one you've mentioned, and Eddie's Wellingham comments.

Damn, I know people at the club read these forums from time to time, and I really hope they take note of this thread. Whether people like the look of Dawes or not, very few think he's worth one of our first round picks. Personally, I maintain that he's at best worth our third round pick, but others seem to rate him a bit higher.

I'd be comfortable with that, we may well be paying overs but he'd come in as a second tall and be very helpful to Mitch. Essentially straight swap Rivers for Dawes.

Why is chasing good players symptomatic of a poor culture? The chosen players may have failed, but the intent showed due diligence to make the Club strong again.

Our drafting in the last 10 years or so has been the sole demise of this club. Lazy, underdeveloped, apathetic, narcissistic so called 'players' who thought they belonged to Hollywood.

All that is about to change - at least this Club will start to smell like a Club again.

No Jumbo, 'due diligence' was not performed as was shown by the results in the examples you correctly used.

Any player, whether first year or experienced, brings certain talents which need nurturing and development - it isn't a case of pick some and throw out those who don't survive - that is a bad culture.

I think the result is the answer, it has been a failure. The intent was nothing of the sort and there was no due diligence shown by the club at the time. There was only hope that the star would be the answer to all our problems, he wasn't, he was window dressing. When we picked up Templeton the due diligence should have picked up that he was carrying injuries that would not allow him to perform at the highest level any longer, Moore played good football for us, Tillbrook was a waste and Big Carl gave us a bit.

I don't agree that drafting over the last 10 years has been our sole demise but it certainly has been a big one and I think the club have moved on from the idea of picking up the big fish solving all our problems. Not pursuing Cloke is evidence of this.

So I guess we disagree on how we got here but here we are and I agree with you that things are changing and we will hopefully be the successful club we all want. As you say at least we can have a club smell like a club again.

You're right, I forgot about Templeton's injuries - perhaps the brokers of the time were so desperate to see the Dees become a powerhouse again, they trusted him without a medical? That's what I mean by intent....best intentions, but a degree of naiveté.

But, I digress....is chasing Dawes emblematic of this culture? Or a changing of philosophy? This Club has hardly recruited a big name player (with the exception of Mitch) since...since...

I think it's about direction, a game plan and a medium term strategy to success.

Neeld needs to make this happen.

I think we are heading in the right direction going by what Neeld is saying and his comments re chasing Cloke reinforce that to me.

The only problem I have with Dawes is paying too much and I don't think we will get drawn into that. Collingwood are talking up the trade for Dawes but at the moment they have him behind Jackson Paine who they picked up at 50 in last years draft.

Neeld and Brown will know his upside if there is any, the price to me would be a third round, maybe late 2nd round pick or like player if they feel he can add value to the club.

There are no quotes from the MFC in this article, nonetheless, were this to go through, I'd be demanding Harrington and even Neeld step down immediately.

Wellingham and Dawes for pick 4 = GTFO. Would be reluctant to part with 13, but probably would do it for both players (not Dawes alone), but pick 4 ...

Dees, Pies discuss super trade

There's going to be some very upset Demonlanders when they wake to read that article in the morning.

I'm not one to question our Footy Dept but surely not.

Emma Quayle has a really good rep but she's been putting her name to some very speculative articles this trade period.

She's used to writing about under 18's. She has now been given the opportunity to join the speculative fiction section of the Age footy writers. This article, obviously written at the request of a couple of player managers (in return for future 'leaks'), is up there with the hun fantasists.

A player manager mate of mine loves doing this.

I dont like it. I'm not sure too many of the folk on this site would either. But I CAN see the thinking.

Pick 4 could be potentially a gun ... or potentially a Morton.  We need experience and muscle to develop the kids in our side around, and we need that now. Many on this site are always (rightly) banging on about culture and developing the talent.

Well, this is one of the possible ways to do it. Not only that but I'm sure MN has one eye on his coaching life. If we were to win only 3/4 games in 2013 his tenure may well be cut short and he's not going to let that happen without a fight. Bailey showed what happens when you bet it all on kids and cant get the runs aren't on the board.

To be clear I don't want to lose pick 4 on two middle of the road players. I don't want to get Wellingham here when he's clearly said he wants to play somewhere else (perhaps hearing word of this deal?) But I do see the thinking behind it and while I would grit my teeth I could live with it ... I think.

It's understood the Demons would agree to the Dawes-Wellingham deal only if they did not have to use their other prized pick, No. 3, on Jack Viney, a highly rated father-son option. The Demons want at least one ''live'' pick among their top two selections.

Could this be a ploy in order to get loud mouth Eddie on our side to stop GC from bidding on JV? And then leave Colliwobbles high and dry afterwards? Wishful thinking perhaps.

I'm one of the rare people who won't mind giving up pick 13 for Dawes.

I'm so over pinning our hopes and dreams on first round draft picks

I'm sick of our club screwing up first round draft picks

Morton, Gysberts and Strauss were first round draft picks who aren't even in our best 22.

The club needs to start winning games next year, the club needs to bring in players who will help achieve this.

A Clark-Dawes attack, plus a hopefully improved midfield may net us a 9 or 10 win season. Imagine winning every second week!

Dawes, while not a star is a gorilla who will need a gun defender on him. Clark is the same. We could really expose some teams with weak defences.

That's what I thought. It also mentions the pies trading 4 to GWS for hogan in the mini draft which shows both clubs how Viney in the second round could work in their favour.

If we give pick 4 to Collingwood I will go bananas and my mfc membership goes up in smoke! Neeld has to get over his infatuation with all things Collingwood!! If we trade pick 4 for Dawes/Wellingham (both rejects, despite Buckley's rhetoric, who don't want to come to mfc) I will think that Neeld is recruiting to win games for his next contract and not in the interests of the mfc. We will be plagued with mediocrity for years and years...again!

I don't think we are actually going to do it but we are certainly getting the idea out there that we are willing to move it on and it could be to the benefit of the teams that may be considering picking Viney.

LIVE AND LET DIE by Meggs

The Demons’ impressive late season charge to finals will most likely come unstuck this Saturday evening when the Bombers blow up the also-ran Blues in the Ikon Park double-header.   To mangle McCartney, what does it matter to ya? To have any chance to play next week Narrm has got a job to do and needs to do it well.  We’ve got to give the Pie sheilas hell, say live and let die! It’s Indigenous Round for this game and the chance to celebrate and engage with Aboriginal and Torres
