The Free Agency/Trade/Draft Rumour File

WJ, i agree DD is the clubhouse leader but this Penski fella is closing in. Top rumour, which led to speculation on who he might be referring to. Good job.

If it was Butcher he would be a terrific fit for the dees IMO and i would assume the club would be right into him (if they thought his work rate was up there). Big unit and 2 big units up forward is the new orthodoxy (which is why i wouldn't discount us chasing Dawes, despite his woeful form this year)

I know a bloke who has a brother on the board.

He tells me that the Bombers are making a huge play for Rory Taggert.

Apparently their spotters took a keen interest after scouting the couple of games that Rory played for Casey. From what I read on 'Land, he was quite impressive, and got plenty of the ball.

I guess it shows the value of having a well resourced football department.

Their early offer was a 3rd round pick, but we told them to go jump. He also added that his brother thought it was unlikely to happen, but that he couldn't count it out, as the Bombers has been sniffing every week, and had also sent some of their heavy hitters for a face to face with Rory.

Would be interesting to see what players are eventually offered, although essendon are usually very hard to deal with.

i know this thread is about rumours and therefore not to be taken too seriously. But is this even possible? Can a player be traded after only one year? I thought there was some rule about initial two year contracts for players being drafted for the first time.

Like all trades for players who are contracted, I suspect they have to agree to the terms.

I think drafted players have to be offered an initial 2 yr contract, I am not sure whether that precludes them from being traded....

Slightly related.... haven't GWS signed up several of their players beyond next year?

All roads lead to John Butcher?

I'd be interested to know the story regarding his injuries. Butcher was once aligned with Tom Whatsisname as likely to go 1/2 in the 2009 National Draft but he drifted out late in the year due to problems with his form and with injuries. He then took until late 2011 to make his debut and caught everybody off guard with a couple of bags of goals. However, he seems to have gone completely off the radar with only 8 games and 11 goals this year.

The other thing is that I notice Port Adelaide also rookied his younger brother Danny from Gippsland Power (0 games) so I'm not sure about the homesickness story.

Obviously, the worry would be that we would be getting an injury prone player whose future is uncertain. I suppose that might possibly make a swap for Jurrah a reasonable proposition.

The other worry coming from this source is that the Pennski file on Seinfield wasn't particularly the place to which one could go for reliable information.

Fair call WJ, though the Penski file would be a great name for this thread give the parameters set out in your OP. I just wish i had a rumor i could add. I obviously move in the wrong circles because i can't ever recall hearing any trade whisper, from a reliable or unreliable source (other than on DL or the media, or a mate passing on a rumor they had heard or read in the media))

You're getting this direct from the Pennski file so don't forget where you first heard it.

Another Port Adelaide player (apart from Jacobs and Salopek who have already been mentioned in despatches) is really desperate to return home. He's a country lad who has had his share of injuries over the past few years but is very keen to get back to his own turf and have a crack at reinvigorating his career. That could lead him to the MFC. Who knows?

I like how the Pennski file reads.

Please sir, some more?

It would surely be ironic if we end up with Butcher after losing Scully.

I heard from a very reliable source that two clubs are rumoured to be exchanging players in a deal that will send forums into meltdown.

Any chance of saying which two clubs (and for that matter which players). Or at the least is one of the clubs the dees?

Melbourne are intrested in Steven salopeck as they see him as someone who could provide experience and leadership around the club.

Another thing also Melbourne are very keen on South Fremantle youngster Adam Carter in the upcoming draft this year.

I have it on very good authority.

That being the Nightmares that wake me up at 3:18am

in time to tune into TEX nightmares.

That Brad Miller and Cam Bruce having been newly retired, will nominate for the draft in the hope of being picked up by the worst team in the comp.

Not a real contribution but my mate is a law Don and he told me 2 weeks ago that Goddard was signed. 4 year deal. Done and dusted. Told him he was an idiot..... I assumed the usual Bomber arrogance had clouded his mind.

The next bit is pretty solid info.

Apparently we are preparing to manipulate some of our existing contracts (1 bloke in particular) to clear more money for 2013 free agency as the club is aware that as a destination, we stink. Hoping for a better 2013 that will lead to more interest....

Love your work Dazzle - keep em coming.

Have seen Adam Carter in the 20+ range in some mock drafts

No suprises here JJJ - MFC doesn't seem like a great place to work (culture of losing etc) compared to the big 4 or 6 vic clubs. We need to throw big cash at player like Mitch to get them to the MFC

Apart from Cloke who will stay at CFC and Goddard who is not what we need at the moment (IMO) no real value on the market in 12......

We need to give you blokes like ROunds a go get fill in players for a year or 2 to play a role (Sellar/Magner) until we become 'attactive' to come to

Yeah I have heard that they are trying to get rid off Davey and his contract as his body is shot.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
