Good luck to Jared, I really would've liked him to stick around but I can understand why he wanted to have a crack with Geelong.

I am tipping less coin at Geelong than Melbourne - they have much more talent they have to pay.

Good luck Riv and wish you all the best.

Good luck to him, a good servant.

Good luck lining up on Mitch or Dawes, or perhaps settling for being a perch for Howe.

Mark Neeld: Alright Clarke/Dawes, whoever has Rivers on them make sure you go to the goal square and go 1 on 1

We didn't really have much of a choice in him leaving so I wouldn't call it a 'trade', although I guess that's the net effect.

Hopefully this means we get a 2nd round comp pick and use it on Pederson. I don't mind this outcome at all.

Usually when Melbourne players leave for another club I couldn't care less if they did their knee in three places, but I wish Rivers all the best. One of my favourites during his career.

Probably could get Pedersen with our 3rd rounder. Save the 2nd round pick for another young mid

Yeah... doubt that would happen considering they have Lonergan, Taylor and Mitch Brown. I'm tipping Rivers will play some very good footy for Geelong as a third or fourth defender.

All the best for the future Riv. You've been my favourite player for the last 9 years and after 150 games and 10 years service I wish you no ill will.

Hope you get premiership success at Geelong next year, but then from 2014 onwards when we really start our climb I hope you regret your decision.

Isn't our 3rd rounder now 58? Not sure if North would be happy with that.

Having said that, if this compo pick is 27 (1 after Viney, I have no idea how it's calculated) then it'd be overs.

Bummer. Sad to see him go and was hoping he would stay. Personally, I don't wish him the best and I hope the Cats start sliding out of the 8, and he lives to regret not playing out his career at the Dees.

Good luck Riv. Loved your reading of the play and your unflinching courage across half back. A great pity that you won't be a one club player, but I'm sure you will always be welcome back at Melbourne. Time to move on for both Melbourne and you. Now for the compensation picks.

Sad to see Rivers go, but also can understand his decision. He's stuck with this club through a lot of cr*p and is one guy I really wish the best for. I hope that he gets to experience some successful years at the cats and plays a bit of finals football before he retires. Then once that's done I hope we'll be the one's making regular finals appearances.

I wonder if Neeld knew this was on the cards yesterday when he made the comments about Watts being part of the back six....

Don't blame him.

Realistically Frawley and McDonald would be picked ahead of him

Garland also shown by the fact he spent more time down back than riv

and watts playing down there.

Shows he would be out 5tall. Makes the backline a bit slow/top heavy.

Sad to see him go.

good luck to him

Although I will always wonder what his role was in the Cam Schwab / Dean Bailey / 186 debacle, Jared Rivers was one of about four or five players who I would have given a legitimate pass mark to this year.

Good luck at Geelong, Riv. Showing disgruntled senior Melbourne players how it's done since 2012.

Good luck to Riv - hopefully a win-win. Scarlett - big shoes to fill ...

Looks like a 3-way with McIntosh going to Geelong for 36 and our compo pick likely to go to North for Pedersen, which they'll on trade to Port for Jacobs

If true, another very nice piece of work by Tim Harrington.

UP IN LIGHTS by Whispering Jack

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
