Brad Green's Retirement - It's Official

Range Rover

Interesting statements by Green today.

Am I the only person wondering who isn't buying into the new system atm?

Anyway, nice work BG. Thanks for the loyalty, effort and memories.

Ps aren't gold watches supposed to be given out after retirement?

All the best to Brad

Ran out of likes as Dlanders remind us of the great things this club can do

Hope Brad can retain his strong links with the club

It would be interesting to see his opinions expressed on Dland

Should we offer him membership for an interesting perspective?

I picked up on that also. I counted at least 4 or 5 times where he made a statement regarding people buying into the system.

Maybe a message to some of the more senior players who've struggled this year. I'm thinking about guys like Bate, Beamer, maybe even Morton and Davey.

This should free up some cap space.

I wonder if Melbourne's talk of having plenty of room under the cap factored in this inevitable retirement?

Either way, there is no excuse for the club not to nab more stars (beyond Clark). At least one this off-season.

Do it.

My favourite Green game. R1 2010. We're getting slaughtered by Hawthorn. He gets knocked out and comes back later to take a couple of courageous marks.

I hope he now gets to exact revenge on Dean Wallis, some how, some time.

Anyhoo ... this frees up a lot of cap $$$ to spend on a classy midfielder trade, if one can be found.

Very, very sad, to see a player's career so damaged by coaching over the last few years - Green is a true class act, something a few d/l posters will never understand.

Whatever Brad does in the future, he will do it well. All the best to him.

What would you do if Malthouse gave glowing praise for Neeld?

What would you do if he damned him with faint praise?

What would you do if he condemned Green?

What would you do if he pumped up Green's tyres?

Do you see that it doesn't actually matter what Malthouse thinks?

What I would do is I'd take it on, with interest. And no, I don't see that "it doesn't actually matter what Malthouse thinks". In the context of a discussion board, I raise the comments of Malthouse because he is an authority I respect - I think he is entitled to be considered a thoughtful and well-informed authority - and it did seem to me that what he said about Wallace had some relevance to some aspects of Neeld's strategies and style that I am unconvinced by, and possibly some relevance to the announcement of Green's retirement.

I'm interested in what's going on at Melbourne. Not all of it makes sense to me. I can't see why Green's experience isn't valued when Neeld wants experienced players. I can't see that Greeny is anywhere near the top of the list of NQR's at the club. I wish Green's demise didn't come in the same week as Schwabb's reappointment, not for any good reason, but there is the lingering rumour, and the timing could've been less coincidental. Maybe I'm the only person who will wonder if there's any connection between the two announcements. I'd like to know what someone informed and knowledgeable made of Green's retirement and the way it has come about. Reasonable question for a forum like this, I'd've thought.

It would be a reasonable question if Malthouse was commenting on Neeld.

But he wasn't.

sorry to see him go :( very skilled and committed player for the demons. i think he still has a year or 2 left in him but as long as he is leaving on his own terms and he isn't being pushed then i'm fine with the decision.

It would be a reasonable question if Malthouse was commenting on Neeld.

But he wasn't.

we could back-and-forth on this forever - I say Malthouse was making a general comment on what he thinks is good coaching practice. I applied it to Neeld because he is a coach, and it seems to me that his practice appears to be very different to what Malthouse has referred to as good practice. In particular, I had in mind the idea expressed by quite a lot of Melbourne supporters that Neeld perhaps is focused on implementing his own style ("conformity" being his early catchword) at the expense of the players' own instincts (or as Malthouse says, their strengths). Plenty of examples of concern about that, on Demonland. (I can't help thinking about this; and why did Brad Green go on so much in his presser about the need for all the players to buy in?...)

I want to ask the question, you don't want it discussed. Fair enough - two points of view. I guess I'll drop it - no support for my question has shown up....

I thought Brad Green was a great player for us. Great bloke too, my son told me, and I thought in his character he was a very solid example to the other guys. And Tasmanian. I'm very sorry to see him go.

good call mr twister.. mentioned it (at least) three times ..."but you have to have everyone buy in..."

"the club has to stand up and buy into where neeldy wants to take it" - haven't they done so already?!

anyway, maybe this can be taken to another thread, so as not to spoil what are richly-deserved plaudits for a great clubman

Isn't what he said being "over analyzed" by this thread ?

Brad is a very decent person.

He will always be remembered as a real club champion and more - a real "club man".

We all know he was upset by what happened to J Mac and Bailey.

(If you want another : why didn't he - he didn't mention J.Mac in among those great players and friends...).

So, perhaps he is torn a little inside - wouldn't you be ?

But, to me he has been able to do what J.Mac or Cam Bruce could not - go out (publicly at least) on his own terms.

Thank you Brad.

I think by Brad's speech this was his decision. He realises that he isnt going to win a premiership with the club and doesnt want to be hanging around. It shows the signs of a great clubman when he realises its best to let a youngster have a go.

It also explains why he carried on like he did on the weekend, I guess his mind was made up then. Well its now time for the second tier players to step up and take charge.

It will be weird not seeing Brad running around next year in the red and blue. I will always remember the 200 QF aginst Carlton where he got us back int he game. I noticed Fev tweeted about it to today.

I reckon he made those comments about getting on board because he actually wants to see this club get somewhere and see his team mates have some success.

Guest bluey

Another captain knifed, and retired in haste, wonder why nobody turns up to support this basket case, good luck Brad, don't let the door hit you on the way out, say hello to Junior, doubt if we will see your face again, ..NO WAY.

I turn up, do you? Does the heart beat true? I just don't get the constant criticism. If you don't like the club, there are others you could inflict yourself on. See ya.

Thread cleaned a little. I've left the robbiefrom13/Range Rover banter in because although it's probably misplaced in this thread, it's probably a topic worthy of discussion. The Hardnut/Range Rover stuff is gone, because it turned in to what it always does, petty, boring, ridiculous point scoring that was (again) making the thread unreadable.

lol

I honestly don't know why you, and those that would 'like' this post, continue to give input on this place.

It's as if one has found a bar full of likeminded people and pop in, say something designed to raise the ire, get into a fight, then [censored] off after the vast majority keep the person from being pummelled as they know the uselessness of getting into such a situation.

The only issue with doing this here is that software moves rapidly and has evolved to include a function that allows people to filter out the ramblings of those so inclined.

So I guess the pub will soon start to ignore you in ever increasing numbers until the other place is back up and running again.

*Click on your username at the top of the page and select 'Manage Ignore Prefs' - put in the appropriate user and don't thank me, thank Andy (Demonland) for the software upgrade.

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,

    GALLANT by KC from Casey

The world “gallant” is not one that is readily acceptable to losing teams in our game of football so when it was used in the context of the Casey Demons’ loss to Sandringham in yesterday’s match at Casey Fields, it left a bitter taste in the mouth.  The Demons went into the game against the St Kilda affiliated Zebras with the advantage of playing on their home turf (not that this has been a major asset in 2024) and with very little else going in their favour. The Saints have close to a full
