Viney to head recruiting

lets not forget that we have still got Gary Burleigh and the rest of the recruiting team (those based in Tassie, WA, QLD, etc). Sure BP was #1, but he hasn't done an exceptional job afaic.

The likes of Burleigh would still have a very good idea of who's gonna be in the top end of the draft come years end. Poor time to lose him, but not the end of the world. If Todd drafts 3 absolute superstars, what does it say for recruiting managers then?

We already know we've committed to Jack, so the CP's will be our only real concern, even then we might trade them.

I really don't see all the fuss.

BP was in his element when he was basically given free reign to recruit the "Best Talent Available" under DB

Under Neeld there is a specific type of player needed and that is "Hard as nuts" and uncompromising.

Viney is the perfect option to be able to identify who the "Hard as nuts" and uncompromising kids we have coming through this year.

After all young Jack has been playing with this group for two years. Do you think his ol man hasn't taken much notice of anyone except his son.

You are tilting at windmills. His son has already been recruited and has signed a 5 year contract with the mfc last year. You must have noticed?

Sure we've committed to Viney, but theres a lot of water to go under the bridge. We have to structure the draft picks to get the best deal under the father son rule.

It's a ridiculous conflict of interest and personally I think we shouldn't have ever hired Viney. A truly great club doesn't have to hire a players dad to get the son on board.

Look at the situation as it stood, we were left without a head of recruiting in January. All other clubs were locked away which meant we were probably looking at someone with the 18th best credentials and then only in a position to offer them a 10 month contract before we would be looking to replace them. No recruiter would accept that deal and it is not great for the club either. Instead they have utilised resources within with someone who knows exactly what the club wants and where it is heading and they have made the best of the situation.

Even an ardent spin doctor would blush at that bit of fantasy.

I like the structure of Todds new role. That way recruiting managers don't run off on their own deciding what they think the needs of the team are. Or following the mantra of picking "best available", even if not needed.

However, the concern is this:

" the club will look to employ a full-time recruiting manager to eventually take on that responsibility, a role Barry Prendergast played until January this year when he joined Carlton. The person appointed to that role is expected to take on the job in 2013 and will report to Viney."

So we have no-one in the role for this year......

Certainly highlights the under-rated value of the recruiting team to any Club.

How can you make an informed assessment on the relative success of BP and Gary Burleigh unless you are inside the Club? Whether you think BP has or has not done a good job is no sensible basis to put down the role. If Todd picks 3 superstars then he is a good recruitiing manager....period. And whether we use or trade the CPs you still have to develop an informed and research assessment of the young talent in the country to determine that you want to trade the picks rather than apply them in the draft.

Nice bit of fiction. If you think Neeld is not going to go for the best available talent with the picks MFC has then you are dreaming. And given Viney has been focussed on the FD and laterly coacxhing the side has he developed a deep understanding of the footballing youth around the country? I dont think so.

I dont think that is the case. We have to use our first round pick in the ND to secure Viney period. And by the reports its money well spent. The issue as to whether we should have recruited Viney is a seperate issue. I rather he be used for a specific role rather than patch holes they cant fill.

They promoted the No 2 at Apple because the No2 was groomed over a number of years to be the No 1. This may not be appropriate for Burleigh.

I doubt they would have woken up one day and thought, "Todd's been loyal let's promote him", I would assume they have done what they have done because it was either the best or only short term option.

Well, there was the delay in the Leoncelli replacement....and look what that led to.

We're a jumpy lot with good reason IMO , as a club we have an unnerving habit of self destructing .

Hmmm, I just don't like this. Besides the obvious which is the massive conflict of interest in having to recruit your own son there are so many issues.

What does Viney know of the kids in this years draft class? Every other clubs recruiter has watched this batch go through the under 16's and has extensive knowledge of them. If it is for a one year as the article seems to mention then why wouldn't we promote our number 2 recruiter who at least has a head start.

I've got no problem with Viney being involved in an overseeing role as a link between Neeld and the recruiting, but why take on recruiting as well.

I'm starting to worry that our football department is full of people with fancy job titles who probably don't contribute much to the day to day work of recruiting talent and developing it. It's trademark Schwab to me.

Are you a melbourne fan because thats is all alot of S$$t Viney is very much a pro and comes from a hawthorn flag in 2008 and was a melbourne captain and you say we should never hired him sorry but we had jack before todd come back to us and real melbourne fans would welcome a club great and flag winning asst coach back with open arms. Also i can not understand the comment about the fancy job titles like they sit around like a bunch of lazy bums saying what do i do today? what would todd no about the kids? He works for a pro AFL club they would no everything about every kid playing at a good level and have scouts watching there everymove. Im sure he has some work to do reading all the work we have done to this point but he is not working for a local football club and surely doesnt deserve his own talking like he does not have a place at this club. Not to mention his son playing for S.A and VIC im sure he has seen his share of jnr games with the best kids on display.There is nothing to worry about the father son rule we will be using a first round pick for a kid who is a top 5 pick and what makes you think he cant do the job? His been in the game since he was a teen and has put his hand up at a time when the club needs him just like when we had no coach. He clearly cares about the club and wants to help and also to say A truly great club doesn't have to hire a players dad to get the son on board is just showing how silly you are have a look at todds resume and get back to me because he could work at any AFL club. It might not say he is head of recruiting yet but it soon will and if you were to go by the way he tackeld his other jobs then i say GO HARD TODD and hit them were it hurts.

My guess?

They have been unable to get/identify a suitable candidate to be in charge of recruiting. So Viney has had the brief added to his other responsibilities until an appointment can be made in 2013.

Not hard. Making the best of what you have; Viney will hardly be on his own anyway.

I don't think the appointment is ideal, but clearly they couldn't attract a candidate they deemed worthy of the appointment. If this is the case than I respect that they didn't make an appointment for the sake of it. The club has numerous spotters and talent identification experts, as evidenced by the hordes of numbers that sit in on strategic pre-draft meetings.

As I said, not ideal, but not necessarily worthy of the misery that it will no doubt cause some on here.

What part was spin Rhino? I stated the situation as it is.

You are the one who is making baseless assumptions, fearmongering and trying to convince everyone the sky is falling in.

What is it exactly that you expected in this situation Rhino?

Nothing ever runs perfectly in a successful business and if you think it does then you have your head up your you know what. There is always problems and issues coming up- it is how the problem is handled that governs the success of the business.

So tell me again what exactly you expected in this situation especially when you consider every other club had their head recruiters locked up for the year. Make a rushed decision and get stuck in a contract with someone you are realistically looking to replace in 10 months or appoint an interim head and conduct a wide ranging recruitment process to get the best available?

So instead of sitting there potting the decision made, come up with a better solution....

Or perhaps you should just take a moment to really reflect.

Is it possible, that With Pick 1 JV already known, maybe 1 compo pick to be traded for a player like Gaff, only leaving maybe a second round pick live and then maybe a couple of rookies to select, it was thought that with the recruiting committee and TV, that would be ok for 1 year and we could save a salary?

Long thread, so just in case anyone else missed it...

This is what you call learning. We lose our first pick from a few years ago because they offered his Dad a job. This time, we have him working at the club already.

Let's give Todd a go FCS. He knows a fair bit about AFL you know.

Played at the highest level level. B& F's Assistant Premiership coach

Was a senior coach of this list for 5 games last year. He may be just the the man to target what we need because he knows what we lack.

Give the guy some respect.

Just imagine if no team below us bidded before our first pick then JV would slip through to the second round, leaving us 3 first round picks + Viney... No harm in dreaming but wouldn't it be good..

Just to put some of this in context, article on the HUN site about us trying to pinch Collingwood's number two in recruiting, Jason Taylor. Still with one year left on his contract apparently.

Not sure if it's to become number one at Melbourne, or to bring in support for Viney.

BP was effectively told who to recruit last year from the senior coach all within the space of a couple of months of Neeld arriving.

I believe Viney would be very competent at such a role. Surrounded by the FD as it stands right now, Viney will have ample support to facilitate the functions involved in recruiting. There is no reason to think it's a weird appointment. Interesting, but hardly weird.

I agree. And who better to know the young talent around the country seeing as his son has been playing juniors for years. Probably knows more than most think.

as good as it would be, there's no chance. There would be some sort of unspoken rule between clubs to prevent half decent f/s talent getting through to the respective teams 2nd round pick.

But hey, happy to take Viney with our 1st pick in 2012, we've still got 2 compo picks.
