The Gaffer coming home?

I think his problem is pace. Most small players are quick and he isn't.

Funnily enough RL I have the same feeling

If you are small you have to be very very good to make it.

So far I have not seen very very good even at VFL level.

Nev Jetta will be a very good WAFL player, nothing more. I hope I'm wrong, but his lack of leg speed hurts him.

The only way I can see Caddy getting to Essendon is if they lose Hurley to GWS and they used the ensuing band one compensation in a trade with GC.

Here are a part of the compensatory Rules re the use of the picks, >

I hope this helps some.

Melbourne - Round One selection (Tom Scully)

The selection for Tom Scully may be activated by Melbourne after its round one selection in any one of the 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 NAB AFL Draft Selection Meetings. The selection will be immediately placed behind the Round One selection of Melbourne in that particular season. (I.e, should Melbourne earn the right for selection 12, the compensation selection would be number 13, if Melbourne earn the right for selection four, the compensation selection would be number five etc.).

Should Melbourne wish to activate the selection in the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, during the expansion-period Drafts, the selection would be placed at the end of Round One.

For the selection to be activated for the 2011 NAB AFL Draft, Melbourne will be required to notify the AFL of its intention to use the selection by Friday November 11, 2011.

For the selection to be activated for any of the years 2012-2015 in the NAB AFL Draft of that particular year, Melbourne will be required to notify the AFL of its intention to use the selection by the last Tuesday of that particular year, prior to the start of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

The club has the right to on-trade its compensation selection to another club.

If the club on-trades its compensation selection to another club, the selection may be used in that year's NAB AFL Draft Selection meeting, or in any other year up to the 2015 NAB AFL Draft.

Gaff is definitely worth both compo picks however it would be a steal if we could get away with one plus Bennell.

That would leave us with one to use in the draft or the GWS mini draft

I would prefer too keep Bennel and off load Morton if we trade one compo plus a player.

I would be happy to trade either/both for Gaff. However I think by the end of this year Morton will be firmly in our best 22.

Thats the Eagles problem not ours. If he wants to return home. Tell me one other Victorian club that could even get close to what we could offer?

We are in a very dominant position next year, thanks to the Scully compensation. Giving it all up for 1 player would be short-sighted unless we where talking about a Goddard or a Scotty P - Gaff is neither of those (yet).

Well if the Dogs finish below us they'll have an early 1st rounder and the Ward compo pick straight after it so that would trump us if they were prepared to use them - altho I agree we are in a good trading position with the Scully compo picks it's not unique.

I agree with WJ's post (which you also agreed with) - the key step one is to convince him to come to MFC, thenin step two we have the firepower to make it happen. Essendon may convince him or Caddy to go there but unless Hurley goes to GWS it's hard to see how they could make it happen.

No way in the world is Gaff worth both our priority picks.

He is good but he ain't that good.

Plain and simple.

One PP and a fringe player. That's it.

Do you think the 2 1st round compo picks were fair compensation for Tom Scully the #1 pick?

The GWS/GC situation is unique. We got 2 1st round picks for Scully based purely on his contract $s. If Scully had wanted to leave and go to another club in a "normal" trade, I imagine we would have got a 1st rounder and a player.

Remember, we got Clark for just a 1st rounder (12?).

Only an established super star would be worth 2 1st rounders; Gaff is a long way from that (as is/was Scully)

Many here think we were ripped off with Scully compensation. Gaff has shown his worth as a legitimate pick 4 with some years of development. If you won't pay both picks for Gaff, there's inconsistency.

How about we give em Cale Morton. Pick 4 for Pick 4 :)

Yep the fringe player will clinch it.

In a normal trade, MFC would have been nuts to trade Scully for a 1st rounder and a player unless that player was at least 1st round value. And Clark is an unknown factor for MFC. This could easily be a great deal or something that blows up in our face

I dont think there is a valid market for super stars. WCE got done over on the Judd deal.

Many disagree, gentlemen start your engines ...

Mono summed it up well.

I rate Scully a lot higher than Gaff though.

My younger brother played with Gaff and I saw him play a few times myself.

He is a good, silky skilled player but I don't believe we should give away our two priority picks for him (if the situation arose).

A priority pick and a fringe player like Jetta, Bate, Dunn etc is all I would be offering Rhino, yes.

Giving away two priority picks with such a strong draft coming up would be ludicrous.

mids grow on trees...key position players don't...if mitch clark was worth pick #12...gaff is only worth a first round draft pick at best. I think Brisbane took Mitch Clark with pick #6.

Hopefully next year Gaff and Caddy are searching for new homes.

Adding fringe players is equal or worse than adding nothing. Seriously, do you think the other club are going be saying "thank heavens we got this hack who is barely even in our best 22 to compensate us for losing one of our stars of the future"?

If a priority pick isn't enough and you won't offer both, then you walk away from the negotiation and don't waste the other party's time any further.

So, given Gaff and Scully are a long way off superstars - as you say - I guess you would have no qualms in obtaining Gaff with what we got from Scully if it presented itself ?

Posted

Not a BIG gap between Gaff and Scully, scully still ahead

Gaff is a talent, accumulating machine with good skills,

People always said scully lacked skills

Would you trade both picks for pick 4 in any draft? yes. and Gaff has proven himself so far, we have another year to judge also.

Fair enough you only price at 1PP. Dunn, Bate and Jetta will OOC at the end of this year. WCE could pick them up for nicks. And fringe players with little currency dont swing deals. IMO if we got Gaff for one PP. Its a bargain

In the washup, if it worked out that we effectively traded Scully one-on-one for Gaff, I can't see how you couldn't be satisfied.

Seems in line. Especially if we are rating Scully against Gaff in this thread.

We did not get good compensation for a young star midfielder.

If we can turn that into a trade in which we get a young star midfielder, we are getting closer to propoer compensation.

If we need to trade both to get talent, we trade both.

We need the talent.

If Gaff and Viney Jnr. will help us to win premierships i have no problems in paying good currency for him.

If Gaff is worth 2 compo picks then do it. Gotta be proactive to get what we want.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
