The "Locker Room" board

I suggested that we should have a separate board with a separate thread for each player so conversation can be conducted there in a continuous and "on-topic" manner. Mods apparently think it's unworkable but IMO what's really unworkable is that other threads (training thread) are getting closed because they veer off to discuss (usually the same) players in detail.

Interesting debate is good to watch and can be stimulating to be involved in, but some posters seem to bark at each other every 5 minutes without refreshing input.

Would it be worthwhile for the Mods to do this when we are only a month away from match reviews?

I wouldn't say "mods" think it's unworkable, I'd say that was just my opinion. Happy for others to have the discussion, at the end of the day I'll just go with the flow.

I don't think it's unworkable. I'm in favour of giving things a go and if they work out all well and good. If not, they can always be moved to the main board.

old55, are you suggesting past players as well ? Or just locking in the current list ?

As it stands when the reviews come out, some get pinned for a short time and then they drop off when discussion is reduced to a treacle.

So I gather what you're wanting is a locker room (containing a thread for each Mfc player) to refer to historical discussion on them (on topic) for the whole season ? Is that right or beyond that timeframe ?

I'm suggesting it runs permanently. I think it would be organic - present players would become past players on the board and discussion could continue - the Scully thread anyone? There'd be no reason we couldn't start the Robbie Flower thread in there though. I think the Garland thread would provide amusing reading if it had been running since he was drafted.

If the threads get too long then we split them every thousand posts - we'd be up to "Cale Morton - Part 14" by now I suspect, but I unless there's some system problem with huge threads then I think it's better to keep eveything in one place even if they do get to 300 pages - you can just read the bits you want - and if you want to go back and find where I said "Tapscott is over-rated" it would be a lot easier.

If there's an official season review that could be dropped into the thread.

Mods would have some post moving to do to keep threads on track and there'd no doubt be vitriol in the threads that need cleaning up, so it does put extra load on them.

I think I suggested this when the forum first started but it either didn't happen or it didn't work.

The lines become blurred when discussing a game and the players performance in that game. If it develops like the Morton bashing has it can derail the thread but if it's part of the general comment on the game it's appropriate.

Have you got any ideas on how this "locker room" works on other forums Old or how we deal with these sort of issues. I must say that as a Mod I can see a lot of work being generated with this idea.

Having said all that I'm for the idea and having read the forums in the last few days I'm attracted to the idea of limiting peoples input. Some just post the same thing far too much thinking that if they keep saying it they are either right or win the debate. Usually nothing is further from the truth.

+ 1 for a locker room, for the mods I agree this a huge amount of work. What I would humbly suggest is that if a match review mentions a particular player that it is linked or indexed to the player profile so that when you click on the player you can see an index of match reviews he's mentioned in. This might be what is planned already but it could quickly become a valuable living history.

Perhaps if the writer of the match review could list the players with some sort of hash tag so that the forum automatically 'sweeps' them into the index, saving some work for the mods.

Also can the like/dislike button be set up so that a quick summary of posters who agree with sentiments can be listed with the initial post saying 'morton rubbish', it would save much scrolling through pages

I had a look at Talking Carlton which has a dedicated board for players and it seems to run reasonably well, albeit with the usual criticism of players and occasional bagging.

I'm happy to give the idea a try and will check with Andy (Demonland) to see if he can set it up on a trial basis. Melbourne past and present players only with the usual rules applying.

Of course, if things get out of hand, we'll have to press the Moron button on offenders and abandon the project.

Hey Nasher, would hate to be seen hijacking a thread but how is my avatar going ?

Its already too hard to keep up with the number of threads and we're not even in season. I would prefer to scan a thread and jump over the comments I dont care for rather than have to enter threads for each player to see what is being said. I also think the lines will get blurred somewhat. Where do you draw the line regarding a player thread or something that requires its own seperate thread ie: if Mitch Clark limps off the track is that a story in itself or in his thread? At what point does the weekly 3 word player review divert to conversation on a player that goes in their thread.

Just like the game if it aint broke dont try and fix it.

I call closing the training thread because it too became about Cale Morton is fairly broke.

The general idea is to make it easier to keep pace with topics because they're more centralised and there's not repeat contentt in 3 parallel threads - yes there are grey areas like game reviews and injury occurences - when does it warrant transferring to conversation to the player thread?

It needs to be on a separate board beacuse it will be impossible to find the James Strauss thread on the main board amongst all the other threads when you want to continue it.

I agree BRFE.

I can see logistical issues if say a poster is debating the merits of Jetta or Bennell or Strauss or Tapscott as the preferred running half back. Do we put this in the thread for each of the four with a copy and paste which would then possibly cause several threads to start on the same issue. If someone then wants to add Grimes or Bartram to the debate does this then get spread even further under their names? Or are we indeed better off just leaving this under the single thread titled for example "Who Is Your Preferred Running Half Back?"

There's no rule against "Who Is Your Preferred Running Half Back?" threads - they're great and should continue. It's when there 5 training treads all debating Cale Morton's physique that a problem is occuring.

With regard to the training thread closed and WJ rightly pushing the Morton button and locking it.

Whilst it's inconvenient, it shouldn't take too long to relocate (move) posts to a Morton thread or any other player thread in a 'Locker Room'. I can envisage some confusion for some posters looking for moved posts and Mods/Posters re-directing them.

If anything, it's an inconvenience for all concerned if one or two posters contribute to diverting a training thread for those reading and wanting specifically training updates. We can implore posters time and again to respect the thread topic, but frustratingly, it still happens.

Note: There is also the utilisation of the search engine to find (I'll use the Morton case) such player thread(s) that can be bumped for further discussion as an option.

I have discussed this forum idea before with Rogue. I'd be interested to read his current thoughts on this 'Locker Room' suggestion.

    DELUGE by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons overcame their inaccuracy and the wet inhospitable conditions to overrun the lowly Northern Bullants at Genis Steel Oval in Cramer Street, Preston on Saturday. It was an eerie feeling entering the ground that in the past hosted many VFA/VFL greats of the past including the legendary Roy Cazaly. The cold and drizzly rain and the sparse crowd were enough to make one want to escape to the nearby Preston Market and hang out there for the afternoon. In the event, the fans

    INSANITY by Whispering Jack

Somehow, the Melbourne Football Club managed it twice in the course of a week. Coach Simon Goodwin admitted it in his press conference after the loss against the Brisbane Lions in a game where his team held a four goal lead in the third term:   "In reality we went a bit safe. Big occasion, a lot of young players playing. We probably just went into our shell a bit. "There's a bit to unpack in that last quarter … whether we go into our shells a bit late in the game."   Well

    UNBACKABLE by The Oracle

They’re billing the Brisbane Lions as a sleeping giant — the best team outside the top eight —and based on their form this month they’re a definite contender for September AFL action. Which is not exactly the best of news if you happen to be Melbourne, the visiting team this week up at the Gabba.  Even though they are placed ahead of their opponent on the AFL table, and they managed to stave off defeat in their last round victory over North Melbourne, this week’s visitors to the Sunshi

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last
