So, according to the Age:

"The Demons' Matthew Bate was also of interest to the Dogs"

"North Melbourne has inquired about Melbourne's Addam Maric, having already held talks with him."

Anyone we want from North or the Dogs?

Nothing solid in the papers re Warnock. Apparently we offered Chris Dawes a deal, but he's decided to stay at the Pies on less money. Still looking for a big forward apparently, not sure who else could be out there?

Re the mini-draft, seems that we're in with a good shot re Crouch, less so with O'Meara, either because a) GC have more to offer or B) GWS are going to do the dirty and manage to trade him back to themselves - even though (once again) that's against the spirit of the process. These kids were supposed to be players they could trade for established players, not pick up themselves!

THE TRADING CHRONICLES 2011 by The Oracle

Part Three: PREDICTABLE

There were no surprises when proceedings opened on the first day of the trade period. Fremantle indicated that it was prepared to take Tom Mitchell with a first round selection and, as a result, the Swans who were prepared to match the Dockers' bid, nominated their first pick at 21 and young Tom became their player. Another quality youngster was on his way to Sydney even if this time the player did not fall into the clutches of Kevin Sheedy's evil empire in the city's western badlands.

Sydney coach John Longmire was grinning from ear to ear about snaring the hard at it inside midfielder who uses the ball well and has a strong work ethic. To be able to do so with a late first round pick under the father/son rule was a bonus.

The two remaining father/son nominations failed to draw any bids so Jed Bews goes to Geelong and Dylan Buckley to Carlton at minimal cost. They can be selected with their respective last picks in the draft.

The first completed trades were announced in mid afternoon and they too were as expected. West Adelaide's Steve Morris was taken by Richmond but not under the father/son rule for which he was eligible because he is the son of former Tiger Kevin Morris played 110 games for them in the 1970s. With Port Adelaide showing interest in the 22 year old, the Tigers would have been forced to use their second round draft on Morris so they sidestepped the father/son rules and did a deal with Sheedy's Giants whereby GWS swapped Morris and pick 15 in the draft for Richmond's first round selection of 14.

The second trade of 2011 was no surprise either as it had been foreshadowed at the weekend. It allowed Collingwood to re-list Irishman Martin Clarke, take Murray Bushranger Jamie Elliot and GWS pick 67 for which the Pies gave up their first round draft selection at number 25. As things now stand, Collingwood will take its first pick in the national draft at 47, by which time one of its former players, "Gubby" Allen who now heads up GWS' recruiting will have called out a dozen names.

What does surprise is the pronouncement by Allen that he remains strongly interested in collecting more draft picks at the expense of acquiring experienced players. The apparent obsession with youth even extends to planning a scheme whereby the GWS could exploit a loophole in the mini draft rules to allow it to secure 17 year old whiz kid Jaeger O'Meara.

The rules governing players included in the mini draft were explained by the AFL earlier in the year in GWS mini-draft explained. The article stated that the " Giants must trade the picks and cannot, for example, decide to use one to select O'Meara for themselves."

That was early in the year but now it seems to be a case of never mind the spirit of the rules or how they were intended to operate, the AFL's wunderkind can do as it pleases in its quest to assemble the next football play school at Rooty Hill.

Everywhere else, things went as predicted on the trades front with several clubs denying players rumoured to be moving on were actually up for exchange. Others were among the growing list of players who have asked to be traded to give them greater playing opportunities or a chance to come home. From a Melbourne perspective, three players - Matthew Bate, Addam Maric and Matthew Warnock - have been mentioned in this regard with the latter's manager indicating that he's heading interstate. We have yet to hear of any players whose names are being linked to the Demons.

Completed Trades after Day One:

1. Richmond get Steven Morris (West Adelaide) and first round draft selection (No. 15)

GWS Giants get first round draft selection (No. 14).

2. Collingwood get Marin Clarke (ex-Collingwood), Jamie Elliot (Murray Bushrangers) and fourth round draft selection (No. 67)

GWS GIANTS get first round draft selection (No. 25).

The Oracle is a Demonland regular during trade week.

Thats the issue with the ability GWS have to run the mini draft over 2 years, they dont have to do any business now and would likely finish bottom next season allowing them to snap up O'meara for themselves and likely a Crouch go's #2 next year to whoever has next pick barring any young kids pushing up higher. Thats why Demons we are better off paying bit over the odds now to make GWS who hold the cards give one up...

Posted

No wonder the football public perceives the AFL as being corrupt in the sense that it is allowing GWS to get away with every sneaky move in the book. When these nonsensical maneuveres turn out to be failures will they change the rules and give them another leg up?

I recently heard Leigh Matthews call GWS "desperate". They can't attract established players, they've bought young players for double and triple their true worth and they're not developing the framework for a true football culture. This is a club that's doomed to failure. They should have called them the Bears.

Dogs - Dalhuas?

North - They can have Maric for a draft pick.

Probably mid-late pick upgrades.

Could Lachie Hanson be someone we look at?

Big body that could serve a purpose up forward or down back and has potential upside?

I know he has not set the world on fire as yet, but seems to be the right sort of size and age and may be available

North said he was not up for trade.

The talk of Melbourne using 1 compo pick to try and snare the 2nd pick in the mini draft, meaning they would be free to snag Crouch, would be by far a better result than 2 compo picks for O'Meara. This would still give us pick 12 this year, then 2 x 1st rounders next year (one of which would be assigned to Jack Viney).

Would also mean that we still have some bargaining power for the rest of trade week this year, as we could potentially use our 2011 Pick 12 (or remaining compo pick) in some sort of deal to land an established player.

The big question ios in regards to what established player/s we have already spoken to. According to the media this morning, we have been working on some things for a few months now, and those discussions moved in the right direction yesterday.

The Hun briefly mentioned that we may be linked to Jordan Lisle from Hawks. So I'm proposing the following three way:

Jordan Lisle to Melb

Matt Campbell to Hawks

Addam Maric to North

Draft picks included

In the Warnock thread posters have Warnock to Adelaide (on some pretty flimsy evidence I might add) but:

Lisle to MFC

Gunston to HFC

Warnock + MFC pick to AFC

Posted (edited)

What do we know about Lisle? He has only played a handful of games for the Hawks this year (5?) and apart from taking a good number of marks in a couple of games (15 vs GC and 10 vs Pies), he has kicked one goal and not amassed very many possessions. Yes he is 196cm and 92kg and yes he has kicked 30 goals in 20 games with Box Hill, but does that qualify him?

Also worth noting that as well as being relatively unproven, he was only pick 50 in the 2008 draft, so we shouldn't be offering up too much for him I would think.

You might see Addam Maric to the Roos for Ben Warren.

Other possible trade is Waren to Geelong, Gillies to Hawthorn, Lisle to Melbourne, Maric To North

What ever happened to yesterday's BF evidence of Warnock to Port ...?

unfounded speculation.

unfounded speculation.

Played with jordan Lisle at blackburn, good level headed kid just needs to improve his kicking.

If we get jordan i think it will be involved in a three way deal maybe to help get gunston to hawks. Wouldn't give anymore than a 2nd rnder for him in this years draft.

I wonder what the Bulldogs are throwing up for Bate?

I am thinking there maybe a threeway deal. No interest in Bulldogs players.

Hawks don't have a decent ruckman...surely we could trade Spencer or Campbell :)

They still wouldn't have a decent Ruckman!!! Spencer is a joke and Campbell is not up to it.

I'd prefer to give Maric another year.

Ben Warren is the sort of player we have too many of already.

I agree. Much like shuffling the deck chairs on the Titanic. Not that our club resembles the Titanic....just a figure of speech. :o

Spencer is a promising 22yr old ruckman, but agree he is not the straight up first line ruckman the Hawks are looking for.

I'm not sure where I stand with Maric. After seeing glimpses over the preseason I wouldn't mind him having a preseason under the new tougher regime to see what he can produce. There has been a lot of talk around about his arrogance and lazyness. Hopefully they could knock this out of him otherwise we are going to lose a lot of value on what was a first round draft pick not too long ago!

Bate is not elite enough to be in the midfield they are trying to put together and I would rather Cook and Fitzy be given games ahead of him up forward. Has been a good club man so I think it is one we would have to move to give him opportunity.

I realise this contradicts the first round draft pick i mentioned with Maric above though with Bate I think we all know what we get. With Maric we havent seen his best yet, though we may never!

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
