Scott Burns with Neil Craig

I also want Malthouse.......................if not, at least a seasoned, successful, former senior coach!

We do not have time for an untried senior coach to do an apprenticeship with us.

Our list needs a disciplined, respected senior figure from outside Demonland.

Surely there are a few who fit this bill and would take on the job for the moola being offered as well as the potential that we have at the moment.

Why is Gavin Brown not mentioned by any club. He has coached in his own right at VFL level, been assistant at Collingwood and I've heard that he has been very good at Carlton and has finally given that club the balance between defense and attack.

Whatever the the coaching outcome, I hope Todd will be ok with going back to his development role...

Because if we get an untried coach I like the idea of having Craig alongside as his 'senior assistant' with IP from Coll, StK (this should be easy enough), and Haw.

Still waiting for Malthouse.

Obviously it doesn't affect my support, financial and otherwise, of the club, but I couldn't get overly aroused by this appointment at this stage. We can talk ourselves into getting excited about the appointment of any current assistant, but we wouldn't have a clue as to which of them would be a great coach and fit with the Dees.

Agree - no-one here would have the faintest idea about the relative merits of the assistants on offer. If we go for an inexperienced coach it would be essential to get an experienced mentor from outside the club on board to help a la Mark Thompson at Essendon. There seems to be some competition for Craig, he was linked with Richmond and Brisbane in yesterday's paper and I can't see anything that makes us more attractive than either of those options. Where does it leave Chris Connolly? Do we need/can we afford Director of Coaching and Football Manager? Collingwood seems to think they do but MM seems unhappy with the definition of his role there - I'd be keen to read the respective JDs.

I was on the get Ross Lyon bangwagon and I've been on the MM bandwagon too. But it's just madness to speculate - I can see that an assistant with experienced help could be just as good. As pointed out elsewhere the majority of recent premierships have been won by first time coaches - Thompson, Clarkson, Williams, Worsfold, Roos v Malthouse, Matthews. I'm off all bandwagons and am trusting our panel to make the right decision - oh my gawd!!!!

TV said when he took over the coaching, that this was his intention.

He may decide to throw his hat into the ring, but I'm pretty sure GL would give him indication of whether this was worth him doing beforehand, and I doubt he'd hold any great resentment toward the club if not chosen.

Just off twitter this one is supposedly from Grant Thomas* (and remember that he works with Garry Lyon on Footy Classified -

(* I say supposedly because apparently there are a few people around who fake other people's names on twitter accounts.)

I quite like the idea. The other two Scotts coaching in the AFL have been very impressive.

be happy with that

The same people were saying we had made RL a 5 year $5million offer and that was crap.

They are all guessing

Guessing, - probably, most of us, but somebody was prepared to put money on the deal that ended falling over.

Wrong, I doubt it.

Lyon has been reported to be getting millions for his contract over there.

On one hand Garry has supposedly sealed the leaky ship and put a strangle hold on information coming out of the club, and on the other hand he is leaking information to a co host on Talking Footy.

I just don't know what to believe anymore. I'm trying not to believe that which is most convenient for us just for the sake of it.

What's the bet our new coach hasn't even been mentioned yet? The odds are probably as high as any of the possibilities put forth thus far.

We will have an answer soon though, until then we are just playing with ourselves. Not that there's anything wrong with that lol

Long bow to draw. How do you know (if indeed it's true) the story got passed around that way. There are countless other pathways including player and coach managers, media spies and people who happen to be in the right place at the right time to see a meeting occur. Not to mention phone hacking!

Who knows?

Now that RL's future is obvious to all, maybe GL has reached out to his mate GT to spread another rumour about another candidate, to deflect attention from Malthouse who we really signed back in June.

It's all speculation.

Adds fat to the fire (although they can't spell)

This Kim Hagdorn couldn't hit the side of a barn house. Nevertheless, if the Burns/Craig option turns out to be true, i guess it means Connolly will be packing his bags. "Burns, 36, could take over as Demons head coach with Craig as his director of coaching to oversee the entire football and development department."

Again Hagdorn hasn't a clue and is putting on a blindfold and throwing darts willy nilly, hoping one hits.

I was merely commenting on the idea that Lyon has "sealed" this leaky ship- but yet information still gets out. This attests to the fact that Bailey wasn't a gossip queen squeeling to the media at every opportunity.

Either the info's been leaked, or yet again it is just more speculation.

WJ,

respect your thoughts however where do you see Chris Connolly's role if this did eventuate.I thought if we didn't get a Malthouse type re a very experienced coach then we may have gone with a Burns or a Neeld but utilized C.C'S experience and current knowledge of the list along with Viney.

Connolly has never been a senior assistant, as I believe Neil Craig would be, if brought to the club.

I don't see why there isn't room for them both.

If Craig is to take over Connolly's role as General Manager of Football (iirc) then we'll need to bring in someone else to be either "senior assistant" or "head assistant" or even just an assistant.

They are distinctly separate roles, to my understanding.

The Hun is now stating that Mark Neeld is set to be offered the Melbourne Coaching job.

Looks like the Burns and Craig rumor could just be another unfounded one.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out

    GOOD MORNING by Meggs

If you are driving or training it to Cranbourne on Saturday, don’t forget to set your alarm clock. The Melbourne Demons play the reigning premiers Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields this Saturday, with the bounce of the ball at 11:05am.  Yes, that’s AM.   The AFLW fixture shows deference to the AFL men’s finals games.  So, for the men it’s good afternoon and good evening and for the women it’s good morning.     The Lions were wounded last week by 44 points, their highest ever los

    HORE ON FIRE by Meggs

The 40,000 seat $319 million redeveloped Kardinia Park Stadium was nowhere near capacity last night but the strong, noisy contingent of Melbourne supporters led by the DeeArmy journeyed to Geelong to witness a high-quality battle between two of the best teams in AFLW.   The Cats entered the arena to the blasting sounds of Zombie Nation and made a hot start kicking the first 2 goals. They brought tremendous forward half pressure, and our newly renovated defensive unit looked shaky.

    REMATCH by Meggs

The Mighty Demons take on the confident Cats this Saturday night at the recently completed $319 million redeveloped GMHBA Stadium, with the bounce of the ball at 7:15pm. Our last game of 2023 was an agonisingly close 5-point semi-final loss to Geelong, and we look forward to Melbourne turning the tables this week. Practice match form was scratchy for both teams with the Demons losing practice matches to Carlton and Port Adelaide, while the Cats beat Collingwood but then lost to Essendo

    WELCOME 2024 by Meggs

It’s been hard to miss the seismic global momentum happening in Women’s sport of late. The Matildas have been playing to record sell-out crowds across Australia and ‘Mary Fowler is God’ is chalked onto footpaths everywhere. WNBA basketball rookie sensation Caitlin Clark has almost single-handedly elevated her Indiana Fever team to unprecedented viewership, attendances and playoffs in the USA.   Our female Aussie Paris 2024 Olympians won 13 out of Australia’s all-time record 18 gol

    EPILOGUE by Whispering Jack

I sit huddled in near darkness, the only light coming through flickering embers in a damp fireplace, the room in total silence after the thunderstorm died. I wonder if they bothered to restart the game.  No point really. It was over before it started. The team’s five star generals in defence and midfield ruled out of the fray, a few others missing in action against superior enemy firepower and too few left to fly the flag for the field marshal defiantly leading his outnumbered army int
