Sick of people saying this. You got some examples and proof to back that up? No, you don't.

Well i dont really have proof because i dont work as a recruiter or in this industry but surely you must beleive that sometimes things happen behind closed doors and then deals get done.

One example i can think of off the top of my head not quite to this extent was the Luke Ball St Kilda/Cwood saga. While he ended up at Collingwood in the end if Melbourne or another club felt like picking him up earlier in the draft then they could have pretty easily (We had 4 picks in the top 20). He had already declared by this stage that he didnt want to go to Melbourne and put the price tag he wanted on his head hoping C'Wood would pick him.

Collingwood would hope that we would do the right thing by them and let him slip through along with a few other teams and thats the way it ended up.

Your naive if you think teams arent discussing this JV fiasco at the moment working out how to make the situation work out best for them and who they need to contact to get the best outcome.

Ok so what they need to do is stop p**s farting around and contact GC to work this thing out

Heres a hypothetical -

Melb - Look we are taking Viney and we really dont want you to bid so lets help each other out.

GC - How can you help us?

Melb - Well Caddy is leaving and we will end up with a much better offer than your gonna get elsewhere say pick 13? Geelong etc wont be able to offer you that.

GC - I'm listening...

Melb - Ok heck we will throw in a Petterd as well

GC - Ok deal we wont bid

Simple everyone wins GC get better renumeration for Caddy, we get Viney at 26 and everyone is happy!

.....and do we he really know that something along these lines hasn't been "unofficially" discussed, that our club hasn't even though of that? Wow... Hope they read this board.

I think I said this in another thread, though it seems the Dees are keen to pick up 1 gorilla and 3 mids with its first 4 picks this year.

At the moment if GC do not bid for Viney we look at getting something like

#3 Toumpas/Wines, #4 Hogan, #13 Wellingham/Garlett/Mcrae/Kennedy and #26 Viney

If they do Bid then something like may be feasible

#3 Viney, #4 Toumpas/Wines, #13 Wellingham/Garlett/Mcrae/Kennedy and #26 Dawes

Both results net us 3 mids (including Viney) and a Gorilla forward.

I doubt we would pass up on him though it would mean that we have to take Dawes instead of Hogan.

Did I read somewhere that Toumpas had a 'worsening' hip injury?

Really? I heard he had one, not sure about the worsening part. Nevertheless he was just used their as a suggestion. I am sure if he is not worth the pick we will learn more towards O Rourke or Mayes or even Grundy

Of course they have but you just have to hope they it sorted. As much as i would like to think it should all have been worked out/ discussed awhile ago now that the media is going made for trade month and the draft it raises all the speculation again.

Its a MASSIVE difference to how good we are next year. We could effectively insert pick 3,4 and Viney into our midfield and notice an immediate change with so much upside.

Relevance?

Like anything not happening has deterred Demonland from dissecting the negative ramifications of the hypothetical.

I should put that in a tweet...

Random thought

What if there were no hypotheticals.

I understand that you put him there as a suggestion....it was just in the HUN today they alluded that his hip injury might be a factor.

stuie and I had a good debate about Grundy - ex basketballer, apparently a real tank? Good pick up?

And herein lies the great conundrum.

Jack Viney is a known quantity to us, so why all the pathetic angst about spending a high draft pick on him?

I'll tell you why: Beacase no club has ever had to use a top ten draft pick on a father-son selection.

And why is it that we have to be the first to do so?

BEACUSE WE WERE [censored] THIS YEAR and thus were rewarded with a top ten draft pick!

Get over it my friends and shed your welfare mentality you'll feel all the better for it.

It shouldn't be. Even the best first year players are still first year players. For example GWS had about 5 top liners (Greene, Coniglio, Cameron, Hampton and Treloar) and 5 more who looked about as good as your average top draft pick (Smith, Shiel, Patton, Hoskin-Elliot, Adams, Tyson etc) ad they couldn't influence games. Obviously its different with the rest of our side more ready to go the GWS but I still think even if they are playing well 3 18 year olds wont massively change things overnight.

Ah ok, that's fair enough. To be honest I don't think their is any super differences between Toumpas/O Rourke/Viney/Wines and we will end up with 2 of them.

In relation to Grundy I think that we will only take him if we do not pick up Hogan or Dawes.

I think we are playing for 3 of Viney/Toumpas/Wines/O'Rourke/Kennedy/Garlett/Mcrae/Wellingham/Caddy/Vlastuin

and 1 of Dawes/Hogan/Grundy

We don't need to say anything.

It's implications are obvious.

Unless GC strongly rate JV as the 2nd best player on offer (by a fair bit) they'd gain zip for making us take JV at 3, and risk using their 2nd pick on a player they don't rate as 2nd. If they let him slip through they potentially gain something from the MFC in terms of trade (Caddy, Toy, etc...).

That one would be a Selwood, Judd, Heppel injury, the Adelaide clubs would love him and are throwing a bit of misinformation around would be my guess.

I agree with you (and have mentioned it previously a few times). GC gain nothing by nominating for the sake of it. If they bid it's cos thats where they will rate him on a needs basis for the club.

Doing deals to stop GC nominating is tampering, just like it is tampering by GC or GWS to force us to use pick 3 if they don't rate him at 2. Good luck proving it though. How can you prove Viney isn't worth pick 2...?

Pick 1 and 2 in the draft are too high risk for GC and GWS to be playing silly buggers with.

God I am sick of this topic, I can't wait for F/S nominations to be over just so people can move on.

By geez, I hope they talk to Joe Daniher too. They would be negligent if they didn't.... .

Touted top 2 if he wasn't a F/S.

Terry Wallace "It would be the greatest injustice if Melbourne were forced to use pick 3 on Viney." Said GWS have already screwed us with TS.

Pretty certain he will go thru 2nd round.

Posted

Wallet on Trade Week Radio is pretty adamant that neither GWS or the GC will bid on Viney. Says there are two many factors including go home factor, better players in this draft & GC needing pick 2 to possibly negotiate with trades such as Tippett.

Posted

Wallace just speaking plain and honest sense on TradeRadio.

Are Gold Coast willing to use #2 on a player who has trained and played at a club where his Father is? Oh, AND HE'S NOT WORTH PICK 2.

I know some dont like Barrett, i know some dont like Hutchison, i know some done like Wallace. But TradeRadio is AWESOME

Realistically this is a pretty simple one. If we do not rate JV in our top 4 players in the draft then we do not take him. It would be embarrassing and unprofessional to be bullied into picking him higher than we rate him.

People will get on here and say that he’s good enough we should just take him because he’s quality. But if we do that when we believe him to be rated lower than others, then we actually LOSE an even more highly rated player. The AFL isn’t a ‘oh it’s just about good enough so we’ll take it’ type of business.

It’s easier to not worry about it when the draft pick doesn’t haven’t a name or face, but remember Chris Judd was pick 3. Imagine the hysteria if we lost a player of somewhere near that caliber.

We take the best player at pick 3, simple as that.

I don't understand why all the talk hasn't been about Daniher. He apparently is a gun and possible #1 pick if he were not F/S to the bummers. Taking out the Sheedy factor, why is no one talking about GC/GWS taking him off the bummers?

The assumption is that the bummers will need to use their 1st round pick but it has not been mentioned which clubs would force this pick to be used.

The reason is The Scum have already stated they will use their 1st pick on Daniher therefore he is untouchable. End of story.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
