Couldn't care less about the appointment, the powers that be know what they're doing & would not make an appointment that would be detrimental to the club.

Royals proven...why risk a person straight out of playing that may not be a coaches a-hole purely based on on-field reputation?

I hardly think Royal could single handedly stifle the development of our young up and coming list.

Onward & upward..

So he's fuming, Wellmans decision not the clubs fault...maybe James could egg his house or something.

I've been worried about our coaching panel for being to inexperienced with no major process for Mentoring and accountability. I was worried that Deano kept picking very inexperienced people so they wouldn't threaten him. eg. Mahoney. Williams Laidley would have been too senior to add this year even if excellent. However, I reckon Royal is just about perfect, as about experienced as Deano could take. Knowing we have Jack's dad, and Chris C. I think we've now got a great team. I might now relent on my criticism of our coaching panel. Go Dees

Yes I do not have all the facts just like you. I am just giving my thoughts on the appointment of Brian Royal. You do not have to be extremely nasty about what I have said.

Brian is a very nice person and I have no doubt he will do his best.

Nothing like idle speculation in the absence of the facts. Royal... a very nice person...what a balanced view.

But I am in fear that we will have a Brett Ratten situation again. Ratten had a big impact on the midfield at Melbourne, but when he left it went downhill.

Scott Thompson had a big impact on our midfield and left. Jeff White was AA ruckman in 2004 then got neutered by the centre circle rule. Hmmmm

Really all I am asking is are we replacing an apple with another apple? My gut feeling is that we may have gone for the orange.

In other words you dont know one from the other.

I might now relent on my criticism of our coaching panel. Go Dees

Nah. I doubt it.

So what? He might be fuming at Wellman's disloyalty. Maybe he thinks it's rotten of him to leave. Who knows.

And having no faith in the current board like you, is not what we need either.

Just accept that the old board is gone and the new board have improved our club substantially since they were elected; there's no place for old grudges and if you are just going to continually criticise everything the club does, go and join Richmond it's welcome there but not here.

Well put, wish some would now enjoy the ride instead of moaning all the time.

Brian is a very good Assistant Coach and personally I think he has been unlucky not to get a top job over the years. But as a development coach and as an assistant, he's very good.

Pretty happy with this pick up. Plus he's a Gippslander, so whats not to like? demon_laugh.gif

Frawley fuming?

Of course he is. Wellman signed on to be the backline coach for another year, only to bail a month into the contract.

I was fuming and would be even moreso if he was meant to be my coach.

I hope Chippa tears apart Essendon when we play them.

Cheap shot robbie, thats not what he's saying at all. And Jimmy & Schwabby wouldn't want us to have blind faith, but rather a sharp interest in the goings ons. This reflects the passion & interest of the faithfull & would ensure the club stays the straight & narrow course forwards.

I am really pleased that we are getting some hard core experience back into the coaching ranks. Viney and Royal are both seasoned campaigners with know how and both have the discomfort of unfinished business twisting their guts but for different reasons. These are the guys we want.

Hey Rhino, isn't it about time you stopped bellyaching about how Jeff White was ruined by rule changes. If you can't survive to the rules as they develop then theres no hope we gonna ever win a flag. He became a dinosaur so deal with it.

I totally agree, if Chip Frawley is fuming about Notta Wellman leaving, then he should just play his absolute heart out, particularly against the Hird Regime.

It is not the clubs fault at all. Todd Viney will keep our list tough anyway. Choco Royal was always highly rated last time he worked for the MFC

Interest, yes. Influence ...Hmm. Hard to imagine Connolly and co sitting round and making decisions based on what people might/might not say on Demonland. Great to have a place like this to exchange views, but let's not get above ourselves.

Anyway, Brian Royal. Good appointment - but I would defer to the FD's wisdom, even if I thought it was a dud appointment.

Very much influential. If things don't add up, the people will stand & be counted, make no mistake.

But the club is currently on a very good & stable pathway, thanks to the rank & file people who helped out with generous donations & support.

But when necessary, AFL clubs from time to time, need a good kick from the members. Just not too often as has been witnessed in past decades.

With all due respects to Brian Royal I am not so sure if this is a good move. According to the article he replaces Sean Wellman. Does he have the same knowledge as Wellman who is a up to date defensive coach? Why did he leave StKilda after just one season?

Unfortunately this appointment maybe just to fill a gap for the 2011 season.

To be blunt I am a bit worried about how our defense will go next season.

i don't know weather he will be good at the Dee's, the only thing that worries me about our assistance, is that we have three assistance, who where all midfielder, Royal, west, and Todd, do we have any assistance who played in the back line,we might have too many, midfield coaches and no defence coach who played there, does the defence coach needed to have played there, to know how to coach there.

Not a cheap shot at all, this guy has history and this is just one of many times he has criticised the club and any decisions made by the new board.

I reckon this is a fair question to ask.

I think the answer is no, you don't need to have been a defender to coach defenders, and so forth.

However, many people on here throw up names of recently retired defenders for defensive coaching roles, and so forth, based simply on their playing record and not with regard to whether they're actually any good at teaching people stuff, it seems.

From that I take it my view isn't a universally held one.

Not that you'd get the point cali but Ratten had one year as midfield coach when White was AA and Scott Thompson was outstanding in the centre. It was not a case of Ratten going from MFC and the midfield collapsing. There were other factors at play. But I am sure you will dredge up some fantasy floss to suggest otherwise.

To be in the coaching game this long you need to know a thing or two about coaching. Royal should bring some new thinking to a relatively young coaching compliment.

    TRAINING: Wednesday 19th February 2025

Demonlander The Analyser was the sole Trackwatcher out at Casey Fields today to bring you the following observations from this mornings preseason training session. Training  was at Casey today. It consisted of a match simulation for one half  and then a free choice activity time. Activities included kicking for goal,  aerial , contest work etc. I noticed the following players not in match simulation Jack Viney  running laps and looks fine for round one . I think Kolt looks like he’s im

HARVEY WALLBANGER'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS Absent: Salem, Windsor (word is a foot rash going around), Viney, Bowey and Kentfield Train ons: Roy George, no Culley today. MATCH SIM: Friday 7th February 2025

Demonland Trackwatcher Gator ventured down the freeway to bring you his observations from Friday morning's Match Simulation out at Casey Fields. Rehab: Jake Lever and Charlie Spargo running laps.  Lever was running short distances at a fast click as well as having kick to kick with a trainer. He seems unimpeded. Christian Petracca, Kade Chandler, Shane McAdam and Tom Fullarton doing non-contact kicking and handball drills on the adjacent oval.  All moving freely at pace.  I didn’

Tommy Sparrow was here last week in civvies and wearing sunnies. He didn’t train. Today he’s training but he’s wearing goggles so he’s likely got an eye injury. There’s a drill where Selwyn literally lies on top of Tracc, a trainer dribbles the ball towards them and Tracc has to g

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
