No Buckley and no Moloney of the players we might have expected to play.

Good to see Zomer has been included.

After the Intra-Club match I think he's earnt his spot in the line up.

Good luck to him.

from the hawks web site- Please note the Club will not play an intra-club practice match. They will have to be underdone!

"The Hawks will take on Melbourne in Launceston on Saturday with a squad containing 13 premiership players.

Notable absentees include Luke Hodge, Lance Franklin, Jordan Lewis and Trent Croad who are all on the comeback trail from injury.

Of the newcomers, there will be plenty of interest in debutant Ryan Schoenmakers, the club's first-round draft pick from last year.

Fellow draftee Liam Shiels has also been named as have rookies Haydn Kiel, Luke Breust, Riley Milne, Garry Moss, Matthew Suckling and Cameron Stokes."

Anyone know why Moloney and Buckley were omitted?

Is Moloney being held back due to injuries?

They are essentially the only 2 available players left out of this squad (assuming you exclude first-year draftees and injured players).

If left out for reasons other than injury this seems like a major back-hander to these two.

I'm not worried about either of them, even Moloney. I'd say the slightest niggle and a player will be omitted, it's pre-season so there's no point in risking anything.

Looking forward to seeing Petterd and Grimes in action, hopefully this'll be a break out season for both of them.

If the club is playing to win, then we play the best squad:

B) Whelan Warnock Frawley

HB) Petterd Garland Bell

C) Davey McLean Morton

HF) Sylvia Miller Bate

F) AUssie Newton Green

Foll) Johnson Bruce Jones

Int) Dunn Grimes Bartram

McDonald Bail Valenti Spencer

Emerg - Meeson, Cheney, Zomer, Martin

While I agree, Beamer and Rivers have missed so much football over recent years that it is disturbing if Beamer is still getting niggles. When over his ankle injury Rivers needs to get back to playing football pronto.

After his intra club game I am pretty sure Cheney will play and that probably means Bail will miss out. Bailey did say that some of the new draftees would play later on.

As I understand it, Moloney wasn't isn't quite at 100% speed after a delayed start to full preseason, and will be left out long enough to be at his peak strength when he does come in.

Rivers rolled his ankle, it's trivial and in no way related to any previous injury. Not a worry.

Hawthorn may be underdone and a little undermanned (not as much as the hype), but we are still playing the premiership team at what is undoubtedly a 'home' ground for them.

Don't need to look any further back than round 1 last year to know what can happen.

On the other hand, we are certainly in with a shot at this.

I'm very keen to see how the second and third year players go, given that they are the ones who will be mostly deciding the extent of our improvement this year. The new draftees, with the exception of Strauss and Bail, look like they are going to be dealt with gently in 2009 - we are after all building for another golden age, so we'll want them all to be properly conditioned for a ten-year run at the top!

Posted

Brent Moloney (the Tank) only played the 1st half of last week's practice match. At the beginning of the 3rd quarter I saw him speaking with Bails behind the stands. I don't know if this was a planned half of football or another injury concern. Regardless, Beamer is not playing this weekend and that worries me.

Posted

This is speculation, but Buckley might not be playing due to disciplinary reasons. His fb status today was something about being [censored] off, and rumor has it that him and Jones have been getting into abit of trouble over summer.

Moloney not playing, I hope is precaution. We want him out that for both the drive forward he gives, and his passion and leadership.

Valenti, Meesen and Zomer have been named the 3 emergencies from the initial 29 man squad according to the "Bail gets his chance" article on the Melbourne website.

So obviously the theory that players get picked on form has gone out the window.

If we are serious about winning this game, Valenti has to play. And with Robbo's long term injury and Newton showing nothing, it would have been nice to see Zomer in action.

Posted

Why play Valenti and Zomer, no disrespect to there form but they can't play round 1 anyway unless someone goes onto the long term injury list. We have to play 2 ruckman and Spencer over Meesen is good but same we cant play Spencer but from what we hear Meesen has been in bad form.

Get game time into guys that will play early in season proper, the other guys can get form through Casey.

Posted

I can't really think of many other players that would make the regular season squad. In other words, we're playing our best squad in the first round of the pre-season cup. Says a lot. But still, can't wait to see our young guns this year.

Damn Newton, keeping Zomer out of the match.

maybe there is logic behind not playing the 1st year players in rd 1 NAB. If we loose not many clubs will get a look at them in the coming weeks and we might be able to suprise a couple of clubs early season proper. If we win, they can put pressure on the selection table.

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
